O/T Amsterdam

We’re going on a European cruise and stopping in Rotterdam overnight so have a day and a half window to visit Amsterdam. Any advice on activities? We both have no interest in the obvious but want to make the most of our visit. I’d seen the ice bar and thinking of a boat trip etc. I was tempted to just stick around Rotterdam but my better half has told me not to be so miserable

Amsterdam is just a wonderful city just to walk about and enjoy. A boat trip is a good idea and if you like art then the Van Gogh museum would be worth a visit.

Definitely follow the advice of your good lady :)

One of the best in Europe. So much to see. Beautiful architecture, galleries and eateries. Would advise on a canal trip.

You’d never guess how cultural our england away trips have been using Amsterdam as the starting off point 😀

Agree with BFC59 about Anne Frank Museum. We went just after Christmas and it was well worth it. There's a little corner shop/ off license over the canal that does lovely mulled wine too!

Agree with others, Amsterdam is a wonderful city.
Quite a long time since we've been, but I remember it well.

Was there in 2021 Anne Frank House & Ajax stadium. The next street to the right of the main street there is a great American themed bar good atmosphere good beer too

Ice bar is okay bit overrated but worth a visit all the same

Was there last week. You're best pre-booking the Anne Frank and Van Gogh. Both get very busy. Heineken museum was good. Vist the A'dam (free ferry from behind Centraal Station) and do the swing. Church in the Attic was interesting. We also went on a trip to Zaanse Schans. Some great Brown bars 🍺👍

What are brown bars?

We did the ice bar in Prague last Xmas, for what it is I wouldn’t bother, your counting the minutes before you get out 😄

Yeah, it's a really good city. Easy to get round, loads to see and do.

I'd also say that Rotterdam is a much better place than it may appear on first sight.

Smoke some big fat chosty spliffs and whitey in the canal.

😁😬😵‍💫🤢🤮

I’ve not been for donkeys years, but the Leidseplein was good for bars, food and loads of street entertainers during the day/eve, then theatres , bars, and clubs at night.
Waterlooplein had a large outdoor market, daily, if that’s your bag.

Just walk around, the city itself is a museum. It’s the best city on Earth for me still, just breathtaking at times and often the scene on the street is like a renaissance painting! If you want a good oude Dutch pub, I highly recommend Batavia 1920 on Prins Hendrikkade for really friendly service, and a Steak & La Chouffe Pie that is absolutely positively to die for (and proper, impressive roast on a Sunday if they’ve kept the kitchen team together from a couple years ago). There’s also a very new and very nice Mexican restaurant called Fiona on the Warmoesstraat that’s great and have a very enviable collection of tequila and particularly imported mezcal that you would struggle to find elsewhere in Europe. Also LoLo’s on the other end of the Warmoesstraat, Italian fusion cuisine and amazing cocktails that they seem to make up as they go along.

The Ice Bar is a tourist trap, also ‘the oldest house in Amsterdam’ is a lie 😂 they were doing some renovations (again on the Warmoes) on an old building and found markings in the wood beams that they didn’t recognize from any craftsman, so they discovered the oldest building in Amsterdam is actually now a gay club called Dirty Dick’s - shit you not. Anyway it’s worth having a look at it from the outside, in the daytime when the business side is closed 😂 Think it’s from 1400s.

Heineken tour is great, enjoyed a boat trip and took in a couple of museums. Fantastic city and it’s just nice to wander around. Very easy to get around on the trams too.
Enjoy 👍

Go regularly to see my Dutch mate who lives there. So here’s my left field suggestion.

Go to Body Worlds. It’s in the centre of the city and is kind of weird and freaky but everyone I know who’s been there found it fun and fascinating.

I lived there for 6 years and I’d compare a night out in Rotterdam to the delights of Croydon.
Decent alternatives for a night out are The Hague, Utrecht and Leiden.
Alf often posts on here. He lived in The Dam for a while.

Still need to have a Heineken at some point mate! I live in Canada now but I’ll be back in Holland hopefully in Summer for a couple of weeks.

Rotterdam Hooligans! Kom op je Feyenoord! Fuck 020! 😂

Hi Alf. Unfortunately I won’t be there. I managed to get a job in UK and am now back home in Sussex.

I was never a Feyenoord fan. My team was Sparta who are having a great season (2 points behind Ajax!)

Don’t think you get it in Holland any more, couldn’t compete with Guinness
We got some in a bar near the Heineken museum, where we'd gone to slow down our drinking for a couple of hours. Look at beer instead of drinking it.

😂 never did the Heineken experience but had a lot of experiences on Heineken that’s for sure

Go to delfshaven have some nice restaurants and brown cafés, stadshaven brouwerij is beter than the heineken brewery , kinderdijk windmills

Two good historic brown bars are Three Little Bottles Gin and Beer bar and The Wildman beer tasting rooms both handy near Dam Square. The Pancake House on Princengracht for some different local food.
