I’m sure I’m not the only coffee nerd on here, so just wondered what kit, techniques and recipes people are using.

My Kit:-
Sage Barista Express for making Espresso based drinks at Home.
Wacaco Picopresso for making Espresso on the go.
AeroPress for making a “longer” coffee at home.
AeroPress Go for making a “longer” coffee on the go.
Hario V60 for making pour-overs.
Timemore Chestnut C3 Pro for grinding the beans on the go.

Recipes :-
For espresso, 16g of beans ground at setting “7” on the Sage’s integral timer or setting “6” on the Timemore looking to extract 36g of espresso over 30 seconds.

For AeroPress, 15g of beans ground at “11” on the Timemore, 50ml of water for the bloom, 10 sec bloom time, another 200 ml of water, insert plunger. Wait 30 sec and then plunge through the “hiss”.

For V60, 20g of beans ground at “11” on the Timemore, 50ml of water for the bloom, 15 sec bloom time, 5 x 50ml pulses of water at 15 sec intervals.

Not too fussed about making it - I just get some Nespresso pods, OR...... when I can, I go to Monmouth at Covent Garden and Borough Market London for THE best coffee or failing that Caffè Nero's anywhere.

just love those coffees in a tube. twelve for about 89 p. ny coffee. as about American as god knows what. easy to mix . no milk or sugar needed . a good standby .

Trouble is, compared to quality single-estate Arabica beans, instant coffee made from significantly inferior quality Robusta beans tastes; to my palate, at least, absolutely vile
I do drink posh coffees made in a cafetiere but I'm also happy with a jar of Nescafe. I've never had your single-estate Arabica coffee and I would be interested to try it. I'm not the complete heathen I made out in my earlier post.

Away from coffee, PG Tips has just announced they’ve spent £50 million to develop a 60 second teabag. Causing quite a stir. 15

Lor instant coffee for me CBA with all the faffing and then cleaning up with other ways.

Enjoy a decent coffee out which is more enjoyable after having instant.

If you drinking a cafetiere/French Press of ground coffee that's going to be mostly if not entirely arabicia. Depending on where you source your beans from and which beans they are, it may or may not be from a single estate.

That's a great article explaining the difference between Arabica and Robusta here for anyone who's interested.

If you're looking for some beans from a single estate, I'd recommend looking at Exchange coffee in Clitheroe and Blackburn or Atkinson's in Lancaster.

Failing that, valley coffee in Bamber Bridge carries a selection of Atkinson's Coffee and Jonah's in Preston Market, Upside Down Coffee near Abingdon Street Marker and R Coffee in Ansdell all stock a small range of single estate coffees

Personally, for me, a lot of the pleasure I derive from home baristaing comes from the ritual involved in preparing the coffee but each to their own.

I don't actually find the cleanup too much of a major job as I tamp the Portafilter on a tamping mat was just needs a quick wipe down with a microfiber cloth. Afterwards I knock the discarded coffee puck into a knock box which I can then empty into the compost when it's full

A couple of other bits of kit I use :-
Digital Scales with Tare & Timer function to weigh my dose and time/weight of the espresso extraction
WDT Tool to break up any clusters in the portafilter after grinding which avoids channelling and improves extraction

Never touch instant if I can help it . Buy coffee straight from local roasterie ground for my plung pot. Current fav is Indian Malabar
Interested as to who your local roaster is? Personally, I always buy coffee beans and grind them as required, due to the fact that once ground, the ground beans tend to go stale and lose a lot of the aromatics much more quickly than whole beans. As I'm generally heading over to Clitheroe about once a month and stocking up on around 6 x 250g bags of coffee, I find that maximizes the freshness of the coffee and therefore the quality of the brew

My current favourite beans are the Zimbabwe Jersey Estate

Yep, familiar with them as I'm a fairly regular visitor to Cedar Farm

I've got a De'Longhi machine that does Latte's and Cappuccino's. Has a milk frother on the side and, like at Starbucks/Costa etc has a ground coffee part.

I use Ily coffee which is around £7.00 a tin. Makes really nice coffee. It cost around £120 on offer a few years ago.

I also drink instant when I can't be bothered making them in the machine

I have a Tassimo , that gives me all I need , but I do have a caffetier thingy and use Taylor’s of Harrogate ground coffee.

I have a pod machine for all three of the pod systems. Sad I know.

I would have a really nice coffee machine in a heartbeat but I haven't the space and if I'm honest coffee grounds are messy blighters and I'd get bored with it.

I've got a De'Longhi bean to cup machine , & use Amazons own coffee beans 2 x 1kg bags for about £15, great coffee, simple to use, & we get the grounds that are a great soil conditioner, 4 cups a day... MMmmm

My stepson is and he has just added a Sage Barista Express to our kitchen as he bought one with his partner when they were at Uni and they are now living with us for the next few months until they get their own place.

I like coffee but prefer tea but we are trying lots of coffee beans from Pact coffee and Rave coffee. The favourite so far is Fazenda Reis from Pact. I doubt we will buy the same machine though once hey have gone.

salted caramel in the tubes ny coffee. drink it all day. and for cheapskates lke me. one tube two cups . oh and tea sainsbury extra strong red label.

I love coffee and recently treated myself to a Delonghi Magnifica. Absolutely love getting up in the morning, switching it on and having a nice coffee within 1 minute. I have alerts for coffee beans on Hotukdeals so any good deals come up i'm there!

Got 2 of these for £8.99 a pack from discount dragon and it's pretty good. I have heard that the Italian beans 1kg pack from Lidl is very good coffee when they have it during their Italian week. Sells out quite quick though.

Go to Cafe Nero every morning and work there for an hour. I find it good to get to out when working from home all day. Therefore a coffee machine wouldn’t suit me as much as I’d like one.

My mate is in the same cult as you!
In fairness I love the coffees he makes and he’s a big fan of Atkinsons too @April13th1970

Everyone needs a good hobby that thrills!

Mine sadly is buying crazy as pre workout powders with caffeine levels of 350mg +
Then approaching an incline bench press bar like you are pushing a Nobber onto a Damocles sword 😁
(With banging loud tunes in my ears)

I’d say I’m a part time coffee nerd.

After years of drinking the instant stuff about 5 years ago decided I wanted to start drinking the real thing so treated myself to a Tasimo coffee maker for Christmas.

Used it pretty much every day for the first 2/3 years experimenting on the various coffee’s on offer until I had a list of my favourites.

Back then the coffee pods were about £3.50 for a pack of 6 sometimes you could get 12 in a box of the lesser versions.

Roll on to today these same coffee pods are now around £6.50 minimum in the cheaper supermarkets often £7.50 in the bigger ones like Tesco/Asda.

For £6-7 I can get a huge jar of Nescafé gold blend that will last me 6 months minimum so I’m sad to say although I was converted I’ve now gone back to the instant stuff as I just couldn’t justify making a cup of coffee at home for £1.25 and only last week I sold my Tasimo on market place.
