O/T. Best set of golf clubs?

Can the golfers offer any advice on what they consider the best clubs, irons and woods, for a high handicapper? Heel and toe weighted etc?

Any of the reputable brands with cavity backs will be ok. Preference however is a case of trying them.

Depends on cost too. If you have the cash go and try some and get a fitting for them. If you are on a budget I'd recommend purchasing a second hand set of a "top brand" (Callaway, Mizuno, Ping, Taylor Made etc) rather than a discounted "lesser" brand.

There is no "formula" really other than hitting a few clubs and having that "I like the feel of these" moment.

Assuming you're not new to the sport, I'd go for anything second hand. Try golf bidder. No need to shell out hundreds of quid for equipment that will not improve your game or at best improve it marginally. From personal experience, I can hit my 5 hybrid (Taylormade M5) consistently straighter and further than my driver (Cobra King F6). So go for hybrids instead of a driver and fairway woods. If you're loaded, try some hybrid irons.

Secondhand clubs seem a sensible option. I read that the older Ping clubs, the ones with square section grooves are illegal under R&A rules. Does that make them unacceptable for club competitions?

I'd try "Hallowed Golf" down at Tee Time in Norbreck (the old Phoenix/John Jacobs 9holer/driving range, just off Fleetwood road). Ask for James, he's friendly and knowledgeable and he'll let you try them out on the driving range before you buy.

Something like a set of Ping G10s have a forgiving head, cavity backs etc and you'd get a full set of irons for around £100 second hand.

Get a matched second hand set of a decent brand. False economy getting new clubs of something you've never heard of.

Do not buy off eBay loads of fakes. Golf bidder is ex demo stuff and superb. I buy all my gear from there. In my opinion you can't beat Calloway I've got the razr x irons, Ping G15 3 wood and two G10 recoveries, tietlist vokey wedges. Golf doesn't have to really expensive unless you buy the latest models, they aren't really necessary.

Yes, whatever you do, don't buy budget or they could be fakes, it's the old adage, you get what you pay for.
Rick Shiels on You Tube often reviews sets of clubs, I'd recommend doing some research there.

Hi Archie. Not knowing your height, build etc. I could only endorse everyone's advice above about going where you see them and speak to someone. If you're tall or short then that can affect the way the irons are built - they might to be slightly longer, or have a steeper/shallower angle of shaft coming out of the head of the club.

If you're a fairly standard build and height then none of that will be an issue.
