O/T Dr John Cooper Clarke

Seen him twice. Got proper heckled at his second gig. Not by me I hasten to add. A very clever, funny wordsmith of the highest order

Every time I see a thread named after him my heart sinks 😂 I saw him live when I was 14 and then I had the great fortune to meet him on a train when I was 16. At the time I was doing some online volunteer writing for NME and he agreed to let me interview him. Everytime I phoned he was “just in the middle of cooking some spag bol son can you phone back tomorrow”. But eventually we had a good 2 hour phone call and to this day I can’t believe my luck at the experience, such a brilliant and humble bloke. He gave me one of the best pieces of advice: “Find an artist you really admire, copy everything they do in your own voice and you’ll be a huge success”!

Great story👍🏻

Glad to hear he was on form as I went to see him a couple of years ago at the Bridgewater Hall with one of my lads and he forgot his lines a few times. First time I saw him was late 70's in London with a fellow Pool fan when we both worked down there. I'd never heard of him and had no idea who he was. It was one of the best nights I've had. Also remember a guy who was on the same bill called Linton Kwesi Johnson who was also superb. His autobiography is a good read.

Thought his build up to his poem about Oldham was brilliant.
"Oldham isn't twinned with anyone but it has a suicide pact with Gdansk "
" Its motto is reversing into the future, well, mid 19th century "
🤣
