'Money is great, but when [my wife] Kelley and I started talking about it, we're like, will our lifestyle change if I got $400m? No, it will not change one bit.

"I could retire right now with what I've made and live a very happy life and not play golf again. So I've never really played the game of golf for monetary reasons. I play for the love of the game, and I want to play against the best in the world'

2023

Takes the money, that must have been an expensive year.

The likelihood is that there is going to be some form of merger between the PGA and LIV so I do not blame him for taking the ridiculous sum (estimated between $300 - $400 million) and then have his Ryder Cup privileges back in no time.

I despise LIV golf. I'd never watch it and I wish others wouldn't. The PGA is far from perfect and this is their kick up the arse to modernise but it has a lot of heritage and I hate that some Arab with a penchant for golf is trying to rip it all up by throwing money at it leaving golf in tatters.

That's multi-generational money. Setup a family office and you're looking after your great-great-great-grandkids. Anyone who didn't take it would be a fool.

I can't blame Rahm for taking the reported $600 million dollars he has been offered as he has access to the majors for the next 5 years with his recent Major wins.

To be honest i have started to switch off from standard PGA or DPWorld events. I am only follow the big events, Majors, players championship, BMW @ Wentworth etc due to the fact many of the best players are not involved. Additionally the PGA events are the same every week, smash it long hit a wedge and its a putting contest. The vast majority of the events are on the same style courses so get boring.

I am hoping that after all this upheaval in world golf a true world tour emerges with all the best players playing these events. ideally this would follow the format below as most top players only play 20-25 events a year.

4 Majors
3-4 week swings across global locations (USA, Europe, Middle East, Australia, Korea/Japan, South Africa) = 20 events

Each of these swings could have their own order of merit for extra prize money etc and even team elements if that is the way they want to go, so long as the best players are playing (150 strong fields).

The PGA, DP World, Sunshine tours, Australia tour, Asia tour etc would all then feed into the world tour so all players have a route to the golden ticket of the world tour. Those that are not good enough then drop back to the tour they qualified from to try to earn their right to get back on the world tour again.

I know the PGA holds a lot of power and many Americans dont like traveling outside the USA (or even have a passport) but for golf to expand it has to be a truly world tour.

Trying to make out the basis of his move is the team element first and foremost is just utter bullshit. Just be honest, he'd get far more respect then.

If, after earning $55 million you cannot set aside monies for your families future you are either a massive gambling addict like Mickleson, or in your own words a fool.

And just to think, bet you was slagging the Oystons off for taking money out the club, but hey, they'd have been fools not to eh😉

I don't think taking money when it is fairly and legally negotiated between two parties (Rahm) vs. illegally asset stripping a club (Oystons) is equivalent.

I am amazed how many sports people can insult peoples intelligence by spouting utter garbage. Self interest without regard to the rest of society.
Their choice, but do not try to preach, or justify.

The majority haven't, including Rory and Tiger, just imagine what's on the table for them, Rahm is small change compared to LIV landing those two.
Some golf commentators saying that essentially he's sold his career for short term gain. Over his whole career on the PGA with sponsorship deals being far bigger / prizemoney he'd probably earn twice that.

I'm not sure you can say the best players aren't involved. Koepka maybe. The rest aren't the best.

You only had to view the gravy train of untalented pundits beating a path to the last World Cup to see that talk is cheap for greedy people with big egos. The greater problem is that Saudi will keep upping the stakes on all this until they break the system. It's a demonstration of power.

There are certain LIV players who are still in the top 50 in the world (Irrespective of what the OWGR system says) and would make any field stronger. Koepka, Rham, Cam Smith, Bryson, Taylor Gooch, etc are all top players.

I'm not saying LIV should be the world tour, I just want a proper world tour for all the best golfers irrespective of which tour they came from.

Yet all they're doing is preserving a future for their families.
Others may just call it greed😉

I am sure both Woods & McIroy will call it greed , & I can’t blame them . When you think of the past greats that played the game , it’s a shame to see these players jumping ship .

I only watch the LPGA anyway apart from the majors and it's much more enjoyable. Too many male egos and LIV just ruining the men's game , the womens is much nicer. I go to plenty of live golf and the experience of the womens british open to the men's is much better. I thought the PGA and LIV had come to an agreement to merge and work together?

Which is why it should be ignored so it becomes a massive failure

Is it just me who finds watching golf tedious?

I really enjoyed playing the game when I was younger but watching it 🧐

I doubt it Mac ‘Cos he ain’t good enough and maybe, after assessing the offer, he has realised that so decided to jump ship while he has such a lucrative offer.
I would imagine though this offer isn’t an up front payment and he will have to commit to a minimum number of appearances to earn it. Plus there will be clauses in the contract reducing the amount should he have a slump in form etc.
We just see a headline of $55 million or whatever and automatically assume it will be in his bank account today but I’m sure the Arabs are quite shrewd when making such offers.

Couple of observations:

1) LIV, DP or PGA it doesn't really matter. The rank and file tournaments are of little interest to most people. Just like the non-grand slam tennis tournaments carry little interest to most people.

2) Players like Tiger and Rory are the exception. They coin it in at a completely different level to the others because of their position in golf and their contracts with Nike. They also get huge appearance fees alongside tournament earnings because of the boost they give the box office. Rory is bigger than any US golfer in the US.

The merger that the PGA agreed was inevitable because of the money being offered by the Saudis. Now it's inevitable that players move too because why should they miss out when Average Joe's are being offered crazy sums. Human nature.

They are to the golf fan, of which there are billions tuning in each Sunday worldwide.

1) As a golfer it matters to me.

The years it took Arnie, Jack and Gary, followed closely by Seve for the Europeans to improve golf for all has been wiped away by the stroke of a pen to recruit some has beens, some wanna bees and some really greedy bastards.

Success used to be defined by trophies, now its down to how many 000000's you've got in your bank.
😔☹️
