O/T Shaun Keaveny's last 6 Music show...

...was this afternoon.

He sounded pretty emotional at the end.
Bit of a shock to hear him say in his goodbye speech "when I was informed I wouldn't be doing this show anymore I wasn't on board with it".

Add in reduced hours for RadMac & Chris Hawkins, and it seems the 6 Music supremos want to cut out humour & irreverence.

I think what happened was the when he got the afternoon slot he lost his mojo, he started moaning and he has admitted it himself. I think there was a certain arrogance with him, possibly from losing the coveted morning show, which he was very good at and I think decisions were made before he realised what a privileged job he had and he got his act together and stopped feeling sorry for himself and got back on form. Sadly there seemed to be some who wanted him out and he helped them make their decision.

However, there has been a huge swell of support for him from the listeners and fellow presenters and celebrities/musicians and I hope they see the error of their ways and reinstate him. I mean how has that boring Jazzer Giles Peterson and the equally boring Guy Garvey managed to keep their spots? One positive is that Craig Charles is taking over the afternoon show and he is probably the best of the lot, his Saturday evening Funk & Soul show is ace and his covering of Steve Lamacq for several weeks when Covid was at its height was excellent.

I hope SK is back on Radio 6 again soon, I will miss his show.

Jeff Smith is Head of Music for Radio 2 and Radio 6, so he’s responsible for the demise of both stations.
Worse still he was born in Fleetwood and went to Baines

The Funk & Soul Show (and his Radio 2 House party) are essential listening in this house.
But when he's covering for other DJs Craig always sounds a bit hesitant, a bit less exuberant.

His final link encapsulated why he is such a good DJ.
I even enjoyed the Carpenters.
Mum liked the Carpenters. So because it was deeply uncool to like the music your parents liked, that meant the Carpenters were rubbish.
Thankfully, that foolish stance was dropped when I came to realise that Karen Carpenter's voice was a thing of pure beauty.

I'm glad he's gone, but a shame it wasn't on his own terms. I liked CC when in for SL, but I think when he gets to put his own stamp on things he'll bore the fuck out of me. I really dislike his F&S show, on account he's scouse, I hate funk and can only partially put up with soul. 🤣

They should have put T Ravo Ravo in there.

I did have a fear that Radio1X was about to take over with Jam Supanova, Gemma Carney and the Madonna bird being promoted. Will happen I think.

I have no idea what 6 music is. It seems to be retirement home for DJs too old for radio 1 but not quite radio 2 DJs.

It's weird. It *could* be brilliant and it has its moments but it's far too attuned to attracting a demographic (people who still see themselves as cool in their late 30s or summat) - Just get some unknown lads and lasses who are proper into music and let them play it ffs. Stop trying to create 'brand identity' - pinheads and weazles run radio. We know this.

I'd also like to add at this point that Keaveny was quite funny, I did enjoy his breakfast show, but I don't really get why he's there as he doesn't seem all that into music and Steve Lurpack is one of the worst DJs on earth. He's truly everything that is wrong with music in the 21st century and listening to him babble over indie landfill makes me want to smash my radio.

I do like Craig Charles. His enthusiasm is infectious. It never seems like a job to him, more of a pure joy. I really admire that.

I lost all respect when Craig Charles tried to chat up a friend at a festival a couple of years ago with the bold opening line "I'm going to impregnate you" (to which she responded "good luck with that, I've had my womb removed". Not the only report of him being a bit of a pest either unfortunately.

Jeff is actually a really nice guy, met him years ago, many years ago!! Radio6 Music still the best radio station.

Yep he is.

I was a school pal of Jeff`s and he was a gentle and amiable fella who had a big passion for music (he was an ELO obsessive!). And he was talented and determined enough to follow his dream all the way to the top of his profession. Not bad for a working class lad from Fleetwood. Well done to him.

Radio 6 is worth it, if only for the marvellous Gideon Coe and Stuart Maconie`s Freakzone on a Sunday night...
