O/T The Waterloo

Hope 'fletch doesn't mind this being here.... The Waterloo is facing closure if they don't raise funds blah blah etc. I know another fundraiser but it's a wonderful place and I have had the pleasure a number of times seeing live music in a great setting.

I know the staff work really hard to keep it going and it's always been packed and/or sold-out on the small number of occasions I've been but they missed out on the government funding. From the crowd funder - '...we were one of the 11% of U.K. grassroots venues that were unsuccessful in securing the government cultural recovery fund...'

No affiliation with the pub or Ian other than being drunk and orderly a few times and had some memorable nights. Even if it doesn't save the place at least there's a few quid for the staff for xmas.

The bit where you have to give money is here... https://www.crowdfunder.co.uk/waterloomusicbar/backers#start

Mods: feel free to remove if already posted, violates terms, anyone objects etc....

That's disappointing. There was a time when the pub and the bowling green were big attractions but that sort of communal activity is sadly in the past.
It had so much potential as a pub but requires a lot of money spending on it - it's a big building. Also, it's car park is too small.
Still, I hope it can survive. It's a piece of Blackpool history.

It’s the best venue for live bands in Blackpool. I’ll be gutted if we lose this one!

Surprised they didn't receive the emergency funding from the government. Bootleg in the town centre did, I felt they were both deserving of it as pretty much the only "venues" in Blackpool!

Weirdly one of the things I vowed to do when it reopened next year was give bowling a crack. I'm probably not old enough for it yet but I thought why the hell not it's outdoors 😆

There's no such thing as not being old enough for it. I've done ballroom dancing, not brilliantly but good enough for me and my wife to waltz round the tower ballroom without injuring us or anyone else. Go on, do it.

It would be a shame if it were to close, albeit when I was last in I thought the place looked neglected to me. Mind you, that WAS a while ago.

Has The George closed as well, for did I imagine that? Now that really was a ropey boozer.

George got demolished a few weeks ago.

That whole area deserves massive funding and regeneration. It’s been neglected by numerous councils and governments for years.

Had my first pint in there in the 70s. The bowling used to bring big crowds and back in the 70s and 80s it was a thriving area. The building of the ambulance station and other buildings meant that the coach park was effectively moved to to the other side of the bridge vastly reducing footfall on the side of the bridge where here my Mums cafe and other shops had flourished.

I knew I hadn't imagined it.
Should have been flattened many years ago, the George that is! I lived opposite the dump for a couple of years 80/81, more than likely one of the reasons why I live where I do now 🙄
Never spent a lot of time at the Waterloo, not that I can remember. Highfield, Oxford & Saddle more my scene.
Great old South Shore building though, good luck to all involved👍

Slightly off topic but Ian showed be around the Waterloo when he took it over. What was spooky that on the upper floors the place hadn't changed a bit and the bedrooms looked like something from a Hitchcock movie still had the old gas light fittings. It's a massive place and needs a lot of upkeep. Hope they survive.

Council will turn it into a block of flat like everywhere els

Had my first pint in there too. It was a cracking pub in the 80’s early 90’s when I used to frequent it on a regular basis and it was always busy. I seem to recall they lost quite a few of the clientele when the Alpine Hotel (now the Gurkha) opened a pub and they never returned. Its a great building but has lost a bit of its character over the years. I still popped in for a pint on match days up until quite recently - hope it survives
