My son who is 8 is desperate to get a WC Panini sticker album as it seems a lot of his kids in his school are collecting them. However having read this article, I wonder what parents in the same position are doing! No way am I spending £883 - any advice for an under pressure Father who does see these albums as a rite of passage and would love my son to really get engaged in the delights of world football.

The Panini World Cup 2022 sticker album has been released - but in order to fill it, football fans will likely have to spend a lot more than they think.

The popular pastime is reignited for every World Cup, and fans have been collecting stickers for more than 50 years.

The first World Cup edition in the UK was launched for the 1970 tournament in Mexico.

In the early days, a pack of four stickers would cost about 5p each, but now, with packs containing an extra sticker, they will set collectors back 90p.

According to author and football finance expert Kieran Maguire, there are 670 stickers to collect for this year's album, which, assuming were all bought on the first go, would cost £120.60.

However, Mr Maguire explained that based on probability, it is more likely to set fans back £883.80.
"The Panini World Cup 2022 sticker album is out," he wrote on Twitter.
"It's 90p for five stickers and there are 670 to collect. That works out as £120.60 if you have to collect all and swap all spares, but if no swapping, then based on probability it will cost you £883.80."

£120 is bad enough, but if your lad has plenty of mates collecting them, your final cost will be a lot nearer that figure than the worst case £880.
There’s collector groups all over social media nowadays too, and you used to be able to order a limited amount of specific cards direct from the manufacture to finish off the collection.
I’ve not done one since being a kid, so I’m no expert.

My mate has a theory that the cards everyone seems to have multiples of will generally be the lower ranked teams. Whereas the ones everyone's looking for as being hard to get hold of, or seemingly non-existent altogether, will be from countries who are likely to figure in the final stages.

Based on this, his tip for the tournament is Scotland.

costing me a smal lfortune but son loves it !

I never completed one as a kid so goign for it!

also it seems to have got him a bit more into the ''beautiful '' game and he knows all the countries, teams and flags etc!

also learning a lot of skills at school with the swapping... is that shiny England badge really worth 10 stickers? If I say no, will the other kid offer it for 5 ?

will never lose its magic

Used to love it as a kid but only ever managed to fill the book once - Football 78 :) which is still one of my most treasured possessions.

You don't need to achieve the 'full house' to have great fun collecting.

for the last book i managed to buy the last 300 odd using the same code from panini website, so wasn't stacked up with swaps, but my lad had enough to think he was sussing it!!

although you have to order them in batches of 50, so a couple of extra delivery charges, but thats better than paying for 5 packs and them all being swaps!!
