ps Does anyone know where B'pool racecourse was sited before it closed in 1915 ?
As an addition to the previous answer, copied from an old article online.

“ Racecourses had predominantly flat and open land which made them ideal for developing military training camps. Squires gate was utilised for medical and training purposes and so the racecourse closed on 26th Aug 1915. The military set about transforming the grandstand into a hospital and became the headquarters for the Royal Army Medical Corp. The hospital was renamed The King’s Lancashire Military Convalescent Hospital, and was used until 1924. 4600 beds were created and the hospital treated some 38000 troops.“

I make no apology for being a pedant. The mean distance from the earth to the moon is about 240,000 miles so at 25K m.p.h. it would take a little under 10 hours for one way, 20 hours for the return trip.

The speed of light is 186,000 miles per second so the return journey for light would be between 2.5 and 3 seconds.

Joe Strummer ran the Paris & London Marathons— “I didn’t f*ckin’ train. Not once. Just turned up and did it,” said Joe Stummer. His keep-fit regime for success— “Drink 10 pints of beer the night before the race. Ya got that? And don’t run a single step at least four weeks before the race.” Got it.
