Those first albums are sublime. I got into them when a skint colleague was selling off his CDs in about 2004 after transferring them to his iPod and I wanted to try some “modern” music. Those two were amongst the 20 or so I got. Random happy accident.

You are right about the small venues, we’ve seen them at the Trades Club, Bury Met, Sale, Preston Students Union, Glos Guild Hall, Picturedrome, Manchester Cathedral.
Ours was a happy accident too. We were on holiday in Zante in summer 2002 and found a cool bar that was run by a guitarist from Sheffield and he was playing the Optimist. We asked who it was and he told us and said that he knew them as he used the same guitar shop as them. We got back home, saw they were touring and got tickets at Leeds Institute, a small venue, a week or two later.

Since then, off the top of my head, we’ve seen them at great venues such as Brewery Arts in Kendal, London Palladium, Southbank Centre, Islington Assembly Hall, Leamington Assembly, Liverpool Kazimier, Manchester Cathedral and Worthing Factory. The latter was around 2 days before lockdown, when COVID was really taking hold, and was quite surreal as the prospect of lockdown loomed large over the gig. We usually tie the gigs in with a weekend away so we’re going to see them next at Leeds Brudenell a week on Friday.

Some good ones there Robbie. How come UK Subs was the worst? I’ve seen them numerous times and they’ve always been good except for Rebellion this year. To be fair though, Charlie was 79 and I believe he has since stopped performing

I think they may have been pissed Captain. :)

I saw them a couple of years later and they were fine. Supporting SLF, I think? I can't swear to that, I may have been drinking myself.

I have never seen them play “Panic Attack” yet though. Maybe they will for the current tour being the 20th anniversary of Ether Song. I think I’ll go to the Mcr Academy on Fri 8th Dec.

Did anyone here see Tame Impala at the Empress Ballroom in Juns 2019? They rarely play in the UK and must have chosen Blackpool for some reason to play a warm up gig before Glastonbury the following weekend? I would have loved to have gone to that.

Say hello to him for me, I can't remember the names of any of them now!! Magnet records was a very safe, MOR label, the most rock and roll artists they had when I was there were Chris Rea, Darts (spookily) and Matchbox, other than that it was very poptastical. If he was in the original line up ask him if he remembers the Christmas party at the Magnet building in York Street, they hadn't been signed long, they certainly livened it up!! Darts were good fun too, Den Heggarty, the lunatic bass singer was crackers on and off stage.

I had a great few years there but I wish I had got into a more "me" record company, and I wish I had stayed there and not left to do something different because I was writing weekly for Black Echoes at the time too.
He was one of the original band and played on all the hits Special Brew et al. He actually left the band because his wife fell pregnant and he had to get a real job !

8. Happy I Got To See - Sex Pistols albeit 20 odd years to late
9. Wish I Could Have seen - The proper Clash not the Cut the crap version I did see
10. Seeing next - Don’t know

Special Brew was my favourite track of theirs, he would probably know Dave Novak and Brian Saunders who were A&R and Mike Levy the owner, he was besties with Tony Blair later I think and was involved heavily with the Labour Party, as unlikely as a record company owner than you could imagine, he scared the shit out of me at that age! I went out and watched loads of bands for them, I gave them Spandau Ballet, The Skids, but they weren't interested. They surprised me with Bad Manners to be honest, Once they heard them and liked them I wasn't involved as I was just a lowly, the band were great though as were all the artists I met, particularly Chris Rea and the aforementioned Den Heggerty.

Aah mate DEVO, I saw them a couple of days before (or after) you in Wales. I’m reliving it every day since, it was awesome. I saw them in ‘78 in Birmingham, and to see them again 45 years later (albeit only 3 of the originals) made my year. The brilliant thing is that it was a 4 day festival and my daughter’s boyfriend‘s (age 23) highlight of the festival was DEVO 😎🇯🇲.

No. All mine were London gigs, predominantly Uni's and colleges and obviously Stanley Park bandstand in 1980 ? Best album ? Force or the Old and the new for me.

They were epic aye, there was a 70’s OG UK skaters reunion event on in London the same weekend as result of this I managed to get invited to the after party and hung with Mark Mothersbaugh, what a fantastic night it was and what a gent he was. The band an are super appreciative of the the support they’ve had from the skateboard fraternity over the years and he wasn’t afraid to afraid to show it on the night. I didn’t know he only had one eye and he had fun with us trying to guess which was his real one😂😂

That is beautiful man. I rate him very highly, way way way ahead of his time. You didn’t happen to get a red energy dome off him which you’d sell?😎. I was so close to catching one of the the ones that were thrown into the audience but sadly not to be.

No, not sure they threw em out in London, we were in the circle seats so nowhere near the mosh pit unfortunately, it was such and epic weekend in my life that now it all seems a bit of blur tbh, mind you we had indulged rather a lot😈😂😂

Edit to add, MM was with his agent/mate who dealt with his Hollywood musical score work and was also a super cool guy, as I said it was an off the scale experience and was made even better to share it with some lifelong Bispham mates and skaters from all over the planet😀😍😎

That Editors gig was disappointing if it’s the one in the Empress Ballroom quite a few years ago.

That's the one pal. Looked like they didn't wanna be there!
It was weird wasn’t it. I’m very forgiving and can usually find positives with most live performances, and have a great time. But you’re right it was flat as a pancake.
