Edited with more detail:
First: The Damned, 1979 Machine Gun Etiquette tour when I was 14 with my schoolmates.
Last: New Order in Leeds earlier this month.
Worst: Arctic Monkeys 2013 Finsbury Park when Alex Turner had gone all lounge lizard/crooner.
Loudest: Leftfield at Kentish Town Forum, or was it the “bassiest” rather than loudest?
Best: probably Chemical Brothers at Empress Ballroom 1999 or 2000 but some great James and New Order gigs around the same time.
Most: Turin Brakes, around 20 times now.
Most surprising: Flaming Lips, loads of kids on stage, lanterns, furry animal costumes, bouncing balls and lots more that I now forget. Weird but in a good way.
Happy I got to see: Prodigy with Keith.
Wish I could have seen: The Clash in their early days pre-London Calling.
Next gig: Turin Brakes in two weeks then the Charlatans in early December.

Or Eric Clapton supporting Dylan at the infamous Blackbushe Airport - I recall he seemed so “out of it” he didn’t play or sing much at all and during Layla he just stood at the back strumming along while a band mate played the lead (and I think his guitar amp might have been turned right down).

Too many I am afraid. I have overindulged.

Love how on these threads everyone's first concert etc...is something 'credible' and 'cool' and not Smash Hits Party Bus Tour 86.

My first concert was aged 13 and was a private invite event of 25 influential musicians listening to John Cale playing the songs of Rory Gallagher on a metronome. Seminal. Leonard Cohen bought me a Panda Pop.

Another Turin Brakes fan. A greatly underrated band.
They are, they have a great catalogue of songs and always put on a fantastic show with a lot of crowd interaction. My wife and I first saw them in 2002 on the acoustic tour and have now seen them around 20 times.

They looked like they were going to make it big when Ether Song came out in 2003, after being nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2001 with The Optimist, but didn’t quite make it although the upside for us is that we can get to see them in relatively small venues and they favour those that are quirky and interesting.

We stayed at the same B&B as them in Canterbury in 2009 when they did gigs on two consecutive nights and we bumped into them a few times and got talking to them at breakfast and they are really nice genuine down to earth guys. We walked into the venue at the same time on the one evening and they were all carrying cans of beer in carrier bags which wasn’t very rock n roll 😆

The Uthanks are refreshingly different and very English. Made the hairs on my neck stand up seeing them a few years ago.

We’ll actually my first taste of live music (definitely not a concert) was The Ron Don Combo in about 1974/5 in the Peacock Room at the Welcome Inn along with my underage drinking Mossite mates. I really don’t know why I remember the bands name, probably because it was a first & from memory they didn’t play the stuff I was into at the time.

The first time I saw them was a Christmas concert in a small venue in 2009, full band and that is exactly what happened to me and it still does every time I have seen them and I've seen them 9 or 10 times, the one I'm going to see is late December and Christmas songs so it will be absolutely magical. I would urge anyone who just loves music to go and see them.

It was a really hard list to do as I used to work in the music business back in the 70.s/80's so I have seen so many artists over the years and I could have added lots to most of the categories.

You can’t beat the small venue’s for me. There’s loads of really good band’s & singers who should be on the mainstream stage’s but haven’t had the break’s.

The trumpeter ( Gus ) is my next door neighbour and a great mate !
Say hello to him for me, I can't remember the names of any of them now!! Magnet records was a very safe, MOR label, the most rock and roll artists they had when I was there were Chris Rea, Darts (spookily) and Matchbox, other than that it was very poptastical. If he was in the original line up ask him if he remembers the Christmas party at the Magnet building in York Street, they hadn't been signed long, they certainly livened it up!! Darts were good fun too, Den Heggarty, the lunatic bass singer was crackers on and off stage.

I had a great few years there but I wish I had got into a more "me" record company, and I wish I had stayed there and not left to do something different because I was writing weekly for Black Echoes at the time too.

Saw the UK Subs in a pub in Paddington, 1976. They were doing some white R&B in with the punk stuff back then.

They looked like they were going to make it big when Ether Song came out in 2003, after being nominated for the Mercury Prize in 2001 with The Optimist, but didn’t quite make it although the upside for us is that we can get to see them in relatively small venues and they favour those that are quirky and interesting.
Those first albums are sublime. I got into them when a skint colleague was selling off his CDs in about 2004 after transferring them to his iPod and I wanted to try some “modern” music. Those two were amongst the 20 or so I got. Random happy accident. “Serendipity” I believe it’s called.

You are right about the small venues, we’ve seen them at the Trades Club, Bury Met, Sale, Preston Students Union, Glos Guild Hall, Picturedrome, Manchester Cathedral.
