Spoke to former Seasiders and Brighton midfielder Andrea Orlandi about life playing alongside Liam Bridcutt.

The two spent arguably the best two years of their career together at Brighton where Bridcutt won player of the year in consecutive seasons.

"Gus Poyet loved him, he would've taken him to Real Madrid if he'd signed for Real Madrid."

We'll have a full length interview with Orlandi out on Thursday where he gives a great glimpse into life in the dressing room during that disastrous 2014/15 campaign when he signed under Jose Riga.

Orlandi was a good player and I seem to remember he upset the Oystons cos they could not count, and thought they had triggered an automatic extension to his contract, but unfortunately for them he left on a free.

I remember that. Didn’t they try and count some training match v FC Rangers u14s or something? He used to do a weekly column whilst with us for a foreign website too?

Cannot remember all the details but I thought it was due to them counting substitutions after the 90 minutes

That Brighton side was very good, they seemed to have great scouting both home and abroad. Given our struggles and without knowing all the current complications with foreign transfers, it makes we wonder why we haven't scoured our net a little further than Ireland.

Brexit mainly. Orlandi probably wouldn't have got a visa following Brexit.
I figured as much, other Championship clubs are still recruiting from abroad however. I understand the difficulties, it was more a case of if we can't find the right player in the UK, maybe it would be worth a nosey.

Pretty easy to bring in an established international or a regular player in the bigger leagues. Unfortunately these will be outside our salary scales. Almost impossible now to bring in promising youngsters with limited experience. Orlandi would not have been able to come across with the experience he had (unless he was able to get UK passport through parentage).

I suspect it's mostly money, plus time as well, it takes a lot of both to set up a proper overseas scouting network, and with limited resources it makes more sense to concentrate on UK and Ireland, where you also have a little more certainty as to what you'll get and how they'll adapt.

Not true, players in the Dutch, Belgian, Portuguese and Turkish leagues are almost certain to qualify, and some of the smaller clubs in the German/French etc top flights are probably operating on similar budgets to us.

Yes, fully appreciate the cost but given we are trying to progress and are now willing to offer decent contract lengths, I just figured it might be something we look to explore. Especially for certain positions where we are struggling to find quality/value in the British Market.

You are incorrect. The player needs 15 points to qualify for a visa. The maximum you can get for playing in Band 2 competition is 10 points (and only then when they have played over 90% of available minutes in the last 12 months). To get additional points they will need to either be a full international for a top 50 FIFA ranked team and/or played a number of games in the Champions League (or all potential games in the Europa League). Pretty unlikely for a player with limited experience.

Talking about Andrea Orlandi he would have had 0 points, based on the latest criteria, when he first came to play in the EFL.

The rules are here: https://www.thefa.com/football-rules-governance/policies/player-registration/points-based-system, look at para 32 and para 42.

Orlandi's problem was the Spanish second flight counts as band 4, which I think is too low (the Championship counts as band 2), and I think he'd have had 10 points based on his minutes for 2006/07, unless the loan to from Alaves to Barca B completely screws things up.

I seem to recall the story was if he played a certain number of minutes it triggered another year on his contract and at a reduced wage due to relegation. The club, or more likely Karl, tried to count injury time in those minutes, Orlandi said games are 90 minutes and threatened to take them to court or the FA or whatever. That’s what I recall but it was a while ago!!

My Missus (also a football fan) had a weird crush on him and was the only player she’s ever asked to have a pic with .. bloody good looking bar steward 😡

Very interesting read.

It was frustrating when you could just tell what things were like for the players but no one could come out and say it at the time.

It makes me want to read Foggy's book now! If you’re reading Foggy, is it easy to get a copy posted abroad?

Good read. Love the fact his wife still wears his Blackpool hoodie from that season !!
