For those of us that do, do you also remember cb radio as a way of connecting?
Were you on it and of so what was your handle ?
I didn’t have a cb radio of my own as was aged 10 to 14 when they were all the rage and my parents, probably rightly so, were having none of it for safety reasons.

So I snuck on my friends.

Had an eyeball or two. How dangerous with hindsight.

Many connections were formed though as I often went ‘on the side’ to invite myself into other people’s conversations 🥺🤣

What a bloody strange phenomena that was.
Any stories ?

Wish we could go back to the old days. House phone. Genuine competitions, Spectrum computer. Loads of things. Even football was only on the tv every now and then. No don't go back with that. I watch everything !. Kids now think life is better. More excitement for things in my childhood.

I get you. But I wouldn’t go backwards in most respects.
Terry nappies, twin tub washing machines and Sundays without any outside trading would finish me off !

I had a pager with my work in the late 90’s.
Gosh, I feel incredibly important now 🤣 but I wasn’t .

Wow CB radio, that takes me back. In my early teens my mate had one - we ended up arranging an eyeball with some bloke we got talking to and walked from his house on Wyresdale Avenue in Poulton to the car park of the Windmill Pub in Layton (as it was then, not the Tesco express as it is now) where he was sat parked up in his car. Just some random bloke probably in his fifties, we said hello then just stood in awkward silence looking at each other for the longest minute ever and then walked all the way back again. Didn’t bother with it too much after that. Looking back now though what seemed so innocent back then would be seen in a completely different light now.

Did he offer you a fiver😮

I remember you and James on it, but I never heard the Layton story! Most surprising part is that you could both walk all the way there and back.

Clappers, was gatecrashing called breaking in on the side or something like that?

Me and my mates used to be into CB in early 80's and used to go to a CB enthusiasts meeting at The Welcome Inn and I suspect a lot of the other attendees were very much into Prog Rock 😉, and at 13 / 14 years old, we were by far the youngest.
I had a mobile / portable cb radio which I used to carry round on my bike, which was considered frivolous by some of the older "buddies".
Soon got bored of it all though and ended up selling my CB to my brother, who consequently was considered frivolous.....🤣

I remember you coming and having a go one day and every time you took the mic you started talking like Sheriff Rosco P Coltrane 😂😂😂

It certainly was. My mate had his set up in the loft in a house at the top of Westcliffe Drive on the hill and the reception was pretty far and wide. Some characters knocking around and you needed a license from the post office!

Yes, it was ‘ on the side’
And if you weren’t disturbing a personal chat then you’d get a ‘on the side come in ‘ as an invitation to join the convo.
It wasn’t safe when I look back, but then again neither is social media in the wrong hands.
I can still remember the ‘handles’ of some of the more prolific Blackpool cb users of the early 80’s. There was definitely a bit of a clique on there around that time.

Yep, I had a CB radio, my handle was Billy Wizz, a lot of time wasted sitting around chatting shit with people I never knew. I did however get an eyeball with a female from Bispham , and I ended up having a short but healthy relationship with her 😜.

In the early 80's one of our group had a CB radio (citizens band was it?) in his car.
One night, a call came over the radio that a child of one of the locals had gone missing.
Everyone he knew was on the lookout for the little girl (she was only about 5 and had wandered off from her front garden whilst her mum was making the tea).

After about an hour, someone found the kid in a local park. She'd forgotten how to get home. They contacted the distraught mum and got the kid back home safely. Happy ending. I'd like to think that would still happen today, but I'm not so sure. The kid will be in her mid 40's now.

I was on as ‘Santana’
Used to have a CBS’s/ car radio called a realistic in the car.
Had a ‘stalker9’ at home with a power pack booster and large aerial on side of house. My sister was on it too as ‘Lady Jane’
Had some great times and met lots of others who are now friends.
Would love to bring it back.

On the side, on the side........ 😂😂😂

What an enjoyable thread.

We could never afford anything like a CB, but a could of my mates (including my next door neighbour who had the mother and father of all aerials put up 😁) were really into it.

They'd often tell me all about. And drop into the lingo. I was quite envious of them actually as it sounded fun back in the day.

Must have been 1984 onwards possibly??
