OT Golf - Ashton and Lea V Fleetwood GC

Considering I prefer parkland to any other golf course it would have to be Ashton.
Some good lads at Fleetwood but I can't get my head round hitting driver 140 yards on some holes and wedge 250 on others

Ashton by a mile. Fleetwood is as boring a course as they come plus it’s usually blowing a gale up there. Only thing Fleetwood has in it’s favour is winter golf as it’s a lot drier but I suppose that depends on whether you want to play all year round?

It's not boring Mosser, they've some really good par 3's.
Think you're commenting on the layout rather than the course but you can only do so much with a bare piece of land and a bit of gorse!!

I do want to play all year round as I’ve got to the point where I begrudge paying all year round for something I can’t use 4/5 months of the year !!

It’s all very subjective -links courses are not always a thing of beauty

Only Fleetwood out of the 2 will give you that option then, Ashton closes quite a bit when wet especially since the new bypass has been built it seems or it could be that everywhere is just experiencing more rain

Where do you play ???

Fairhaven but my daughter is a member at Green Drive, Fairhaven and Royal so I get to play those occasionally with other members as well 👍🏼
If I never played Green Drive ever again, I’d be ok with that !!! - some great holes, some very poor ones where it all feels a bit cramped to me.

Garstang is a great course as well Mosser and the staff are great and make you very welcome.

what about North Shore a few of the Box OF Toys play there pal seems to get good reviews what your thoughts.

I played North Shore 3 weeks ago and it was shite, that bad my mate complained and they've offered us a free round to make up for it. Staining has its detractors but for all year round golf at a relatively cheap price its pretty good. I've played on there about 6 times since November and in pretty good nick considering.

Staining is ok but you need to where trousers because in the summer the horse flys bite you like mad.

Currently having a lot of work done to it and disruption due to making space for future tournaments. Don't know how long it will take.
It’s being done in 2 phases…phase 1 involves moving the 7th green & the 2nd half of the fairway to the right as you approach it, relaying the 9th green and loads of drainage work to the bunkers on several holes. The greens have been completed and need to be ready for the Lytham Trophy at the beginning of May.
Phase 2, for which planning permission has been submitted ( full details on Fylde Borough website), will be undertaken later this year / early 2024. That involves creating the new practice ground for a major tournament and moving the fairway of the 11th hole.

Where will the new practice ground be ?

Where will the new practice ground be ?
On the right of the 11th hole which is moving over to the left a little bit. This will free up the right hand side of the existing 11th hole, together with removal of trees and redesign of the green keeping sheds / land. The teeing ground for the new practice ground will be on the right hand side of the existing visitors 11th tee.
Existing practice ground will remain in day to day use for members / visitors. The new one purely for major championships.

Practice ground will be a long way from the main hub / clubhouse then on a tournament.

I can't see the Open returning to Lytham, the tournament has outgrown the area☹️
Think they'll have to make do with Women's Open, amature championship and the Walker Cup

Watch this space - you will be in for a surprise…..there is no way the R&A who have had significant input into the alterations, which also include improved viewing areas & movement of vehicles around the site, would allow the club to spend millions if that were not to happen.
Don’t forget also, the existing practice ground will be freed up completely by the relocation of the new one. This means there will be substantial space freed up for all the corporate stuff.
As for outgrowing the area…….that is so not true…..it has the best location and accommodation availability of any other venue. Once the Moss link road is completed this year then access is sorted.

Still on site of the golf course which is a lot better than many other venues….Hoylake being one of those where they use a nearby golf course for practice facilities. Portrush involves shuttle buses. Easy job to provide shuttle services to / from the clubhouse. All of which has been factored in to the alterations. It also has the added benefit of removing over crowding in and around the club / 18th hole etc etc. It spreads the number of spectators more around rather than concentrated in one area.

Believe they have already been promised 2 mens opens, 3 womens and a senior open in the next 20 years when this work is completed. If so it certainly helps to keep the visitor prices up 👍🏼
