OT - try painting as a new hobby

Hi everyone

Thought long and hard about whether to post this, but if you've opened this up please bear with me.

I do watercolour landscapes as a hobby, have done for about 20 years. I'm no professional artist - I'm sure there are at several people on here who can paint better than I do - it's just something I enjoy. So this is aimed at new painters.

Recently at work there's been a lot of discussion about what everyone's going to do to get them through the period, and I had an idea about using our new communication methods to start a beginner's painting course. I'm a former training officer, and have always enjoyed helping people learn new things.

As everyone's isolated, the way I had in mind was to write loads of handout material in Word docs, and support it with photos and very short vids demonstrating a few things. I got several people asking to join, so got busy in December writing loads of stuff. There's an Introduction handout where I go through what you need and where you can get it from, then a series of topics (I'm calling them Week 1, 2 etc, but in reality they're just as and when they're available).

The idea is to keep it as cheap as possible, at least until you're sure you want to commit to it. Painting materials come in different grades of quality, and it's easy to spend far more than you actually need to if you're not familiar with it. So I'm recommending spending around £10-15 max on materials which would get you through the Intro and first two weeks.

I won't lie - there's a lot to read. Because I couldn't talk to people face to face I felt I needed to make a lot of points, so the Intro alone got to 8 pages. The week topics will get shorter as the Intro stuff has already been covered.

Each has a technique section describing a particular skill or method, followed by a landscape painting subject that consolidates what's been covered. I've written the intro and two "weeks" so far, it can go on for as long as it's wanted - I've got loads of ideas in mind for future topics.

Unfortunately due to several factors it hasn't taken off with the work group as I hoped, might do once things settle down. So, I have a load of material written and not being used. If anyone on here is interested in trying it out, or even just having a read of what's needed, I'd be more than happy to send it. Put a post up and we can find a way to get in touch so I can tell you a bit more about it, and email you the information.

Thanks

Steve Jackson
