Oumuamua - UFO?

Oumuama is the name given to the first known interstellar object detected passing through the solar system in 2017.

Speculation has continued since that time as to the nature of the object and this has been hightened by the publication of a book by Avi Loeb Professor of Science at Harvard who is one of the world's leading experts on astrophysics. His book claims that Oumuamua was an alien object rather than a naturally occurring one. He suggests it was possibly a solar sail created in another area of the universe.

A number of reasons are cited:

The peculiar shape of Oumuamua - long and thin - which differs from most comets and asteriods.

The fact that it appeared to accelerate from the sun's orbit at a much higher rate than would be expected and left no visible trail as would be normal if it was a comet or even some asteroids.

The fact it alternated being brighter and dimmer and was unusually luminous.

Wiki it very neutral on the subject but it is still an interesting read: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ʻOumuamua

The occupants took a quick look at Earth and its' inhabitants.
And said 'No thank you, they're all crackers down there.' 😃

Seem to remember it slowed down at one point, or at least that’s what they calculated.
I’m open to the idea of universal travellers.
Also wouldn’t be surprised if it doesn’t just turn out to be an unusual shaped lump of space rock. 😜

We really don’t want any ET contact. It rarely goes well when an advanced race technologically meets a developing race.
Think Spain and Portugal arriving in the New World or England and Native Americans.

it watched the pool get beat 3-1 by wigan then shot off in case oystain tried to con them into investing in the club

Oumuamua, is that the guy who plays for Wycombe?

Cant help thinking it would have come much closer to earth if it contained alien life. I mean, not to blow our own trumpet, but there ain't much else to see in this unfashionable end of the milky way.

If they are that clever why design such a pile of shit? Surely they'd make it look cool like a monster Ferrari, it's not as though they'd have to hide from us. A few nuclear warheads would bounce off it.

No one is saying it was a spaceship capable of being piloted or that it contained any life. It is suggested that it is an object designed to travel across space.

You say Wiki is neutral but it ends up saying that most responsible scientists say the alien life form theory is a load of bollocks.

Is he the big guy who won two Superbowls with the Giants and now is a pundit on the NFL show.

'is considered unlikely by many experts' whilst hardly a ringing endorsement is not quite saying that it is a load of bollocks.

The main point is why should one of the principal experts in the world in this area risk his professional reputation if he didn't consider good arguments to back his theory. He is not some unknown lecturer at a backwood college but someone who has a lot to lose if he is proven wrong.

Or someone trying to make a name for himself?

I think he actually said that it was as good a possibility as anything else and should be treated like any scientific proposition. Or something. The book is as much about how science approaches unknown phenomena (According to the review I’ve not read it). It is interesting though.

So its an intelligently designed object, a vessel or ship, designed to travel across......space?

Scientists have had theories, that have turned out to be correct, debunked all through history. Nothing new there.

I think we would be very short sighted, or ingrained non believers, if we thought that we were the only inhabited planet
in the great and endless universe which goes on forever.
There are millions/billions of other planets millions of miles away which could have developed as this Earth has developed, or even before this Earth.
Unfortunately we may never find out because of the unending space.
Let's just hope that one day, when our development has gone far enough, that we are able to communicate with them.
By we I obviously mean our descendants, and our descendants descendants.
Who knows???

That is what being suggested. However there is a lack information to give further details on its purpose.
So possibly a 'Voyager' type craft? If so you would have thought these little green men who sent it would want to check out the local 'm' class planet.

Probably a good thing that we are not able to communicate with them given the past history of the human race.

Agree up to a point.
They might have gone through the same historical process as The Earth and its' inhabitants.

So you start off with Douglas Adams. Then move on to Star Trek. It’s only a matter of time before Seven of Nine gets a look in.
