I don’t know whether anyone has ever looked at our average league position since we joined the football league in 1896 but to satisfy my own curiosity I’ve just gone through 115 years of tables and put league positions on a spreadsheet. I’ve put PNE as well to compare.
It would of course be 125 years if it wasn’t for the wars. There was one year - 1899/90 when we were thrown out of league 2, so to offset this, I’ve given the final position as 37.
Anyway, it’s turned up one or two interesting stats. I’ve used tiers for divisions. During the post war years from season 46/47 Blackpool has been in Tier 1 - 23 times, T2 17 times, T3 27 times and T4 8 times. During that time our average league position has been 39.93.
PNE’s is only 1 above at 38.83.
The period from 1896/7 to 1939/40 shows that Blackpool were in T1 - 6 times, T2 - 33 times and out of the league - once. Our average league position during this time was 29.12 whereas PNE ‘s average during the same period was 18.27. They were one of the founders of the FL so had a few years experience before we joined.
Anyway add these two Blackpool averages together and you get 34.52 over 115 years.
That’s exactly our league position after the Barnsley match (20 positions in the Premiership plus us at 14).
Now after the terrific football we are playing at the moment, I see no reason why we can’t get well beyond this average 34th position.
