Our scouting

When the two Coventry guys were appointed last autumn, it was in the hope that they would start attracting players similar in quality to what they had at the Sky Blues. I know Chris Badlan was dumped in April for leaking the team, but what exactly is Stuart Bentham (if he’s still here) and his team (if has one) doing?

I know we’re not as attractive now we’re a 3rd division team but the only players we seem capable of getting are kids for the development squad (most of whom we’ll never hear of again), out of contact players who seem to see us as a last chance pay day or players who are injured (Swansea laughing their heads off). Just what are we paying the scouting team for?

The scouts do a lot more than just identify players for the immediate inclusion into the first XI - and naturally any manager will have a list of players they want in the squad which will likely trump the list put forward by the scouting department.

They scout opposition, they scout juniors, development squads, they compile reports on existing players. They build databases and carry out work based on scenarios that often don’t even happen.

I think the progress of the youth set up and the results they’re getting as well as the success they’re having in the transfer market could be attributed to the scouting network.

It easy to criticise them based on the back of a rubbish season but then you’re assuming all the players were garbage and putting no blame on the then coach and tactics and environment at the club.

Norburn 30
Pennington 28
Morgan 23 are way off their last pay day and we've just been unlucky with Joseph who played a load of games last season.
I don’t think the aforementioned people were anything to do with Norburn, Critchley has been chasing him for at least a couple of years.

The results of the youth team would be more exciting if we knew that any of them were heading for the first team. But under Critchley they don’t.

All I’d say is that under Critchley some players did play minutes for the first team whereas under Appleton and McCarthy not a single minute of football was played - despite all the injuries and bans. I also think people aren’t considering the sensible approach that needs to be taken with regards to playing the kids until the first team is finalised as playing them for even 30 seconds in the opening weeks potentially limits options for development over the entity of the season.

In fairness, I think the players we've brought in have been pretty decent so far.
The problem is they are all in the same area of the pitch and all remarkably similar!
