Party Gate

Sky news reporting up to 20 fines will be issued later today by the Met police to the party gate law breakers.

Boris is not expected to be one of them but one or two eyebrows may still be raised.

Can’t wait. 🤣

They are centred around the same events and for the same reasons. Don't be obtuse.
I don't think he's being obtuse. I do think you are missing the point he is making though.

I expect a few civil servants will be censured publicly while the people who set the tone for this kind of thing will get away with it. And the fact that some people at the top of the Government apparently think that the rules don't apply to them will be quietly forgotten about.

Apologies if I have not set out my position clearly but essentially what you have written is what I am getting at. I believe the fines will be a token gesture and - as you say - Ministers and MPs will get away with it. Crucially though, Johnson will latch onto them as putting an end to the matter. Conversely, I believe the Gray report will go into greater detail than the Government will want to see made public and only if it sees the light of day will there be any reckoning for those at the top.

You described the fines as "a cosmetic exercise", implying that they were an alternative to releasing the full report, when they are of course two very different things.
We might be on course for violently agreeing with each other. As I state in my reply to BR3 above, whilst they fines and the report are two different things, I believe Johnson will use them as an opportunity to close down the whole thing.

Got you now. We're ALL correct. :)

But then we are expected to hold the holder of the post of Prime Minister to the highest of honourable standards.
No offence.
Clearly Most people look at the Big calls and aren’t bothered about who paid for his wallpaper or him having a glass of wine despite it being against guidance/the law etc. I say this because you know as well as I do that he would win a GE again tomorrow. If you genuinely dispute that then there’s not much more I can say mate

Blood, I'm not after a cat fight on here but no, I think Starmer would win a GE right now. Honestly not being contrary for the hell of it.

What is the bigger crime? Having wine and canapés in your own garden or pushing to needlessly lock every single man, woman and child in their homes for an indeterminate amount of time? It's a tough one but Labour's Wes Streeting is going on the attack anyway 🙃

Big calls. 150,000 dead and still rising.

I'd say he got the biggest one badly wrong, and many others was forced into action far too late.

I’d disagree. Did you have an “acceptable“ number of deaths in mind?

You've for your one vote at the next GE Wiz. Use it how you see fit mate as I will 👍

I'd expect as few as possible, certainly 10s of thousands less. There were thousands of unnecessary deaths caused by prevarication and dithering in the early days. Even Boris has apologised for that, yet people still say he got it right.

Beggars belief, but as you say, nothing will change for a couple of years at least. Bung the electorate a tax cut, back to where we were before the Spring statement as I he's doing us a massive favour, and they'll lap it up.

It's not a debate about the relative moral rectitude of holding parties vs lockdown. The issue concerns members of the Government - including its leader - failing to obey the law and, in the manner they did it, showing a disregard for the law and the public, who were penalised when not obeying it.

You get one vote too just like last time mate

Therein lies the problem. A simple question with an obvious answer but you'd rather play party politics. Most normal people don't give a fuck about this though I will accept the rules were complete horse shit and should never have been enacted.

Believe me, I am not playing party politics. I say as I find.

If you think 1st past the post is democracy, good luck. Its a poor form of democracy there are constituencies nailed on red or blue and if you vote for the other your vote is a waste of time.
Yes that’s true but it IS the system. Are you doing something to change it?

And they’re gonna get away with it as you know mate so…..

Hi,

Can you point me to the clearest example of the PM failing to obey the law that you know about.

Thanks in advance.
Parties in Downing Street were against the law during lockdown...oh yes, you know that. It was the responsibility of the senior officer in Downing Street to ensure that the law was obeyed. He didn't do that....oh, you knew that too.

Then he lied to Parliament...of course, that's a minor matter as it doesn't break a law....or does it? Holding Parliament in contempt, perhaps. You are aware that Parliament is a Court of Law for its members?

Cometh the May local elections. You need a healthy injection of anti-cynicism Blood.
I don’t need anything mate…..I’m 55 and whoever has been in “power“ hasn’t defined my life pal since I’ve been a Nipper …I take responsibility as an adult and have since I was 17 to take care of myself, those I love and vote for who I think will do the best job to help me and those less fortunate than me in the round . I don‘t bellyache and cry over every single issue no matter which Party is in power……waste of time me conversing with you. I’m sure you’re a nice enough guy but you’re a moaner tbh, a blamer and that doesn’t inspire me…..no offence intended
