Patino !!!!!!

Not read all the thread however if we continue to play two / three attack minded midfielders without cover in this division we need to be prepared for a few heavy defeats
For me it has to be two holding ( who can pass a ball to feet ! ) and one sitting in front
ie Connolly and Dougall ( or Stewart if ever fit ) with Patino or Carey
Yesterday was footballing hari kari
If there's holding midfielders they do need to move around more than their name suggests though. Against Stoke in the 2nd half cause Fiorini was far too deep there were times Dom Thompson was bringing the ball forward in a more central area and he and Fiorini were occupying the same space, that can't happen. Early days but the movement needs to be more dynamic.

2 holders is a bit negative to be honest

One holder and 2 play makers like Stoke played would be better but we need that strong presence

Baker and Smallbone with Laurent holding battered us 1st half on Saturday

I think the issue is you can see with our weak right flank a defensive midfielder might be needed to help Bowler with his defensive duties. Whatever the formation whether it's one or two players in the middle of midfield they can help by being more aggressive with their movement if the full backs are going to step up.

I don't think Appleton will change the system that much its definitely a 433 with one sitting a little deeper that sitter has to be better than what I've seen so far

We could go all Guardiola with the DM becoming the de facto middle of a back three and the full backs pushed on. Might need to up our game in attack though 😗

I think we should do that on the left side. Too early to say for me but Thompson looks like he can bring the ball forward and join the midfield in possession. Connolly can sit tighter making a back 3 with Williams and Ekpiteta, have Virtue/Dougall on the right side to provide some cover that allows Bowler to stay higher. He can be the direct outlet with more patient build up play coming on the left with a more advanced wing back. Doesn't have to be symmetrical. That's my half-baked idea based on overreacting to one loss.

Worth a try. You should write a football book or something 🤣 👍

Yep Dougall should be starting if Connolly is at right back
I don't disagree with that, but if Connolly wasn't having to cover right back I would have him in place of Dougall, and if we prioritise an experienced holding midfielder or Stewart returns from injury and stays fit (I know!) then I would play one of them.

Bowler isn't playing midfield, so I'm not sure of this obsession with his defensive duties. Jerry on the other side isn't expected to double up as full back.

Well he does have defensive duties because he was tasked with marking Stoke's left back as he went down the wing, and was tracking back a lot as they countered down that side in the 2nd half particularly. Watch the highlights back and you will see him plenty.

With the players we have at the moment we might be better with 3 CB's and wing backs. In a 4 the FB's have to be able to defend properly.

Thought we may have gone with a song to the tune of magic by Pilot

Ho ho ho he's magic, you know
His name is Charlie Platino

*TAM,
Spot on ! Pool aren’t good enough to play with only one holding midfielder. Their success has come with Dougall and Stewart, or more latterly Connolly in m/f.
The playmaker might be Patino, who has the added benefit of being left sided
To go to Stoke with a lightweight m/f was a mistake that I hope is not repeated. On Saturday, Pool did not have a base to play off.

Also need a mobile striker and still a fcuking right back

Not good enough today the manager needs some backing by the board but we have to get the basics right and pass to players in the same colour shirt
I get more and more concerned about how much I agree with @Philbfctrois these days .. however, I'll judge the board at the end of the month - there are plenty of other clubs in the same boat.

You have to feel as supporters we panic a lot more than the people behind the scenes. There's absolutely no doubt the powers that be know exactly what we need and are trying very hard to get it. It just doesn't sometimes happen over night.

The problems we had started with Quitchley just upping sticks and going out of the blue and he left us with a massive squad, which you might think was a good thing, but in our case it wasn’t because there were far too many players in that squad that just aren’t good enough for us in the championship so the recruitment team, along with Quitchley spent far too much money on very long contracts for players we are now stuck with and really need to shift.

Add to that our failure to actually only be able to sign one player not a loanee has been a hindrance so far. However I think we need to clear out those who just aren’t going to feature, sell or loan and we have 24 more days to get the players in who can play Apple’s system and improve the team.

So who do we need to offload?

Moore or Maxwell
Garbutt
James (done)
Casey (done)
Virtue
CJ
Dougall
Dale (done)
Lavery
Luballa

And I’d add Stewart and Anderson to that too unless we can keep them fit to play.

Take out Bowler, if he is sleeping lad and that leaves us with

Grimshaw Maxwell or Moore
Husband
Thompson
Thorniley
Keogh
Marv
Tharme
Gabriel
Connolly
Carey
Apter
Bowler (if not sold)
Anderson (if fit)
Stewart (if fit)
Yates
Madine
Beesley

Loans

Williams
Fiorini
Patino
Corbeneau

So that’s 18 contracted layers, Apter and Carey are under the age thresh hold so 16 that count, add the 4 loan players and that makes 20 sell Bowler and that’s 19 always have a space free for long term injured unless it’s a seriously long term injury and that gives you five places in the squad available to fill with players Appleton wants. Of course we won’t get rid of all those players I named, we are likely to keep Dougall so that gives 4 places and even then we could see Thorniley leave as he’s in the last year of his contract (I hope not) and Tharme and Apter could be loaned out, more likely Apter than Tharme I would think but Apter doesn’t affect the registered 25 as he is so young.

I think that shows the amount of players Quitchley got in weren’t good enough for where we are now. We did brilliantly to finish where we did last season, but the writing was on the wall in the last 6 or 7 games that we were going backwards, not forwards.

So, in my opinion the recruitment team need to make sure we get a good right back, an experienced holding midfielder who can dictate play and let the two in front have freedom to get forward and a striker who is mobile and can score goals a La D J Campbell and if Bowler goes we need a right winger/sided player who can at least be a real threat.

Tin hat on and my Voyeur deflection armour!!
I thought Carey had passed the age threshold now.
