Penalties

Never understood why players go down the middle, if that's what Jerry intended. I took penalties for just about every team I played for and never missed. Jerry needs to watch Harry Kane's spot kicks who always shapes up one way (usually keepers left) and slams it to the other (keepers right) it never fails and usually ends up with keeper going the wrong way. Jerry needs to be smarter (if thats possible)😀 or leave alone.

Has Jerry ever missed previously ? Still think he is our best penalty taker on the two previous seasons. Particularly Reading away.

I’ve said this plenty of times before….

Our Players have always performed at their best when the crowd are supportive and allow the players the freedom to make mistakes.

When we adopt the “We may be 2-0 down, but we’re still going to sing our hearts out” policy.

It’s that environment that set the tone for Ollie to get us to the Premier League and which got us comfortably home and dry last season.

At the minute we’ve lost that and instead the boo -boys have managed to gain a foothold.

Taking a Penalty in that kind of environment is a different ballgame.

A good penalty taker will shoot either side of the keeper into the top 3rd of the goal = unstoppable.
However, there's not many players who have the skill and bottle to execute that.
Like Kurio, I took the pens for every team I played for and I always hit it hard to my left, just inside the post. Again they are unstoppable.

Just confidence. A confident player trusts himself to put it in the corner. Down the middle is just hoping the keeper gets it wrong. His penalty against Brum was awful but the keeper went the wrong way.

Still better than Fiorini's effort against Barrow though.

Kane has missed 13 % of his penalties versus an average of approx 25% of all penalties missed .

Matt Le Tissier who only missed one in his career said he put his good record down to the fact he could strike the ball hard and accurately using the side of his foot and he also said he would often change his mind mid run up which goes against everything they say you shouldnt do. His record speaks for itself though.

So not quite up to Jerry Yates standard just yet then ? 😉
In League football, Jerry has taken 11 and missed one, so he's actually got a better record than Kane having missed only 9%. His only other miss was in a shoot out in the FA Cup which doesn't count in the records.

Up to yesterday, he had a 100% record at spot kicks

IS that what you were alluding to?

People said yesterday 'Jerry looked nervous' - I really didn't think he did. He played a bit of basketball, twirled the ball about, put it down and then smacked it. It caught the keeper's trailing foot. Shit happens.

Yep…👍

He’s a confident lad and he’s got a very good record on the penalty front. It was probably just one of those things…

We’ve kind of just entered that point where our fans are currently just windmilling around happy to smack anyone on the chops because things aren’t going our way.

Simon Sadler, Ben Mansford, Michael Appleton, Jerry Yates, Bowler and I’ve even had a pop at Corbeanu’s dance moves…. Nobody is safe really…

It’ll all settle down once we get promoted to the Premier League 👍

Guys taking penalties against hungover goalkeepers on a Sunday morning giving a pro tips on their technique. The lack of self awareness of flabbergasting.

I was absolutely gash at penalties. I hated taking them. Now, having seen Jimmy Husband take a stuttered penalty kick and score, I think I could face it.

Because believe it or not, pens hit down the middle are statistically the ones least likely to be saved. The problem is, when they're saved it makes you look like a plonker.

A short run up hit on his instep down the middle, just not good enough yesterday sorry to say. We are seriously lacking a killer touch !

I suppose his rapidly diminishing goals tally in general makes him more vulnerable to the critics when he also fails to convert a penalty ,understandably so when it has a negative effect on the result.

Never took a penalty in my life until an end of season penalty competition and won it. Bottom left, top right, bottom right , top left. I didn’t have to take a fifth
