Player of the Year/Season

Maybe slightly previous but there again the pro’s vote in December for the divisions team of the year.

I was just running through the options and wondering almost by default is it Rhodes or maybe Dembele? other than that i’m struggling?

Grimmy, decent but hardly been outstanding

Hubby for me was in the running but the last few games before his injury his distribution was awful.

Casey, young player of the year.

Who else really warrants consideration? CJ?? 😜🫣

I’m not sure anyone has been consistently good enough to be particularly ‘Stand Out’ really. Dembele is probably the best of some pretty mediocre seasons on the whole.

When you look at it like that, it’s no surprise that we’ve struggled to gain any momentum. Too many players just not at the races.

Needs a big rethink for next season…

That’s what i was getting at mate, no real stand out as such. So glass half full maybe we’ve done well to still be theoretically in the po hunt??

Mediocre season? Thought you were quite happy with the way we were plodding on?

Probably Dembele. With a better coach than Clueless I would say he's the only player capable of playing at a higher level than league 1.

It’s possible to be disappointed with the way the season has gone so far and not to want to sack everyone, force them to live next door to me and scrap the academy 😂

It’s been a very frustrating season, but I remain hopeful that we are moving in the right direction 👍

Dembele.

Rhodes would be in the mix if he hadn’t been unlucky with injuries recently.

Grimmy has done well, most others have had good and bad days.

Off the field maybe but on it most definitely not.

Possibly…

It’s really hard to say whether it’s a lack of ability or whether the system just isn’t quite working. I suspect it’s a combination of both.

Dembele probably the only one. Casey hasn't played that much of late, Rhodes was certainly in the mix up until Christmas since then nah not really done ought. Albie was brilliant for about 6 games too after initially being played out of position and on the bench and now hes injured too. Very slim pickings, says it all about the season really.

We were starting to look a better side prior to the Wigan Game in my opinion. I think the addition of Byers (potential loan to buy) and Coulson has had a positive impact.., The loss of Rhodes is a blow though.

Being totally honest, I don’t think we’ve seen too much evidence that our coach has improved or perfected our ability to play his system over the course of this season really. There’s been some improvement, but our passing is still very laboured and we’re pretty meh in the attacking third.

We would definitely be moving in the right direction if we sacked the manager, made the players and management team all live in the area, improve the academy so we actually brought players through and while we’re at it build a fit for purpose training ground and new East stand. Apart from that it’s been a pretty naff season in my humble opinion 😢

Byers would be a decent signing but are we in a postion to match his ambitions never mind his wages which I strongly suspect are significantly higher than our pay scale.
I'm not sure about Coulson, left sided, but physically lacking in my opinion.
We need to bring in a few who are both mentally and physically stronger than we have.

IMO if we keep playing the style of football we are we need a big horrible nasty striker (like Madine) and a centre back who is comfortable with the ball at his feet

Gabriel definitely Championship quality and maybe Grimmy
Two of our better players perhaps.
Gabriel has pace and enthusiasm but his defending is suspect (caught too often on the wrong side of his man) and his crossing is quite poor. Needs a decent coach to fulfil his potential.
Grimshaw is a decent keeper at our level but is often let down by his lack of height and inabilty to dominate his 6 yard area.

So basically repetitive shit then.

If we don’t have a major rebuild bringing in experienced players all over the pitch we will be staying in league 1 next season, at best.

For me one of the best players has been Casey, he was the best player until he got sent off and never got back in the side after that and has done well when he has played since, i thought he was our best player at Wigan. But for me no one stands out

No one else really comes close.

Did, as suggested in some quarters, Clueless hold a grudge following his sending off?

Jordan Gabriel wears his heart on his sleeve & gives 100%. Had he been fit from the start I'd select him.
Hubby was also in with a shout until injury.
Grimmy has won us a lot of points & even with his weaknesses (which all lower league keepers have) he's in with a good shout.
In my humble opinion, of the contracted players, only Jordan & Grimmy are Championship quality.
Major rebuild need next season. I just hope & pray that SS is willing to bankroll it!

He bankrolled this season without apparent success - as yet. I don't think we need much in the way of new players. We need a more ballsy approach to coaching.

Yes he's liable to mistakes and yes his distribution can be poor but if the player of the season went for attitude and giving your best each game I would give it to Big Marv.

Tough one at the moment. No one has been consistently good this season.
Rhodes, until mid December, for the amount of goals. But injuries & a goal drought/dip in form come back to the consistency element.
James Husband had a strong start to the season but come mid November (ish) his form dropped off - said before, not helped by having no (left footed) competition for his place in the team.
Dembele - fall into the young category? - great to watch when he is playing well but when it’s not his day, he is rotten. Again consistency.
Marvin - performs heroics defending at times but plainly awful with the ball at his feet.
Casey came in & played very well until his sending off v Posh at home. Very stop start since.
Grimshaw has made some amazing stops & certainly won us several games with crucial saves.
Up until November & the subsequent saga Kenny Dougall was our best consistent performer.

If I had to pick today, Grimshaw

What does that even mean?

You've shown a great deal of loyalty & faith in what NC has tried to achieve. I've not seen ongoing improvement in performances, some have obviously been better when we've moved the ball with more urgency but then, like Sat, we revert to type, slow, needless possession at the back then hoof. Repetitive shit.

I agree fully with your last sentence. We need a manager who'll play in the style of Ollie (not him though) or the likes of Pompey.
We'll lose the loan players (they're our better players) and several players are out of contract.
We need to recruit players who are going to push for promotion, bearing in mind L1 is likely to be much tougher next season. Those players (that's if our scouting network can identify them) will cost big money and that's totally a matter for SS & Mrs SS!

Obviously your in the know, but remember hearsay and second hand info isn't always correct and more than often it's not, when you say reasonably that isn't nailed on now is it 65
I'm more than aware of that and you should have noted I didn't say it was gospel.

Dembele, Rhodes if he hadn't missed so many games, Hubby, Casey would have been up there had he played more, like Daz says, they have been a bit underwhelming as a unit all season, mainly down to the tactics but also quite a few just not good enough. A big clearcut in the summer is needed and some much better players in. Icing on the cake would be a new manager too 😉

Can't see beyond Dembele who is a way has made this season interesting but has maybe been one of the problems we're where we are because Critchley seems to have built a team around him.

What does it say about our recruitment policy last summer than two loan players could be up for Player of the Season.
Tashan Oakley-Booth says it all really!
