Reading on it relates to the players who missed the penalties at Wembley.

The screenshot is on another thread. Absolutely appalling.

No doubt someone will come along and say the accounts were hacked from abroad....

Career over before it started. Or it should be.....
Nah, young kid. Not the way we approach life is it? Such a narrow minded view.

He's still a kid going through life uneducated, I've said ample stupid things and done amble stupid things which are sat with me to this day.

Punish, educate and gain experience is the way forward. Not ruining someone's life because of a single mistake.

Definitely appalling but we need to educate the young, by all means punish but I don't think we should ruin someone's career.
If you were a black player in the Pompey youth set up, what are you thinking of your team mates? Presumably they don't say any of this on a day to day basis in the real world. You've now found out their true colours. What now?

I can't answer that can I? I'm not a black player and I've never been racially abused. What I am saying is, what society do we live in where we don't educate these people? We can't drum on and on about racism, ruin people's lives for a naive stupid, racist comment and then expect it to get better in the future. All that will happen is you'll get bitter and angry individuals who feel they were harshly done by.

Penalise, educate and gain experience is the way forward. I'd make them sit down in a room with players of colour from the 70s/80s.

I don't know the answer but ruining 17/18/19 year old lives because of a comment on social media doesn't sit well with me at all and I think it's far more counter productive.

Also, you don't have true colours at 17. That's nonsense.

Punishment and education, no second chances. Although its not like its the 1970s it is 2021, hard to believe some young people are still thinking this way.

The issue is that racism stems from a social context. When you simply punish individuals and do nothing else, the social context remains intact and as Kurt says, you've got an angry person within that social context who is likely to have their view reinforced, not challenged.

I dunno. I'd like to take a brick to them on one hand, and on the other, I listen to Ian Wright and others who talk about this and think the point is to challenge beliefs that people have been brought up with through their family or society.

That's all sounding a bit wooly but it's a kid on a private Whatsapp mouthing off. He needs dealing with, no question but Di Canio wasn't thrown out of football for declaring himself an actual fascist, that lad who abused Glen Kamara didn't have his career ended...

I agree that with the post above. Last chance. Absolutely no equivocation and education.

Agree with SeasideKurt. This behaviour is appalling and these people need education and relevant punishment as he clearly states. Who of us have not done stupid insensitive things when we were that age. Thankfully we were given redemption. We were given a chance and able to learn from our own mistakes and in some peoples cases callousness. Lives were not destroyed and lessons were learned.

It's not nonsense at all. Actions have consequences. I'm not saying they should be sacked. I agree with your education point, but as a footballer today, surely you must know their comments were totally out of order.

Incidentally, if that was a supporter, under the new legislation they'd be banned from football for life. Is that different for people in the industry?

I don't agree, I think it's nonsense. You can't show true colours at 17 when you've got fuck all life experience.

I don't agree with that either, 5 years including a racial discrimination education programme attendance. Zero attendance then 10-15 years.

Punish (fine and/or suspension) and educate to challenge their thoughts is the right approach. Any future issues and they are out of football for life.

That seems to be the fashionable thing to do these days though, doesn't it? It'll be burning at the stake next.

The number of academy players who make it into pro football is pathetically small and that’s without the racial abuse.

The actions of this / these cretins is probably enough for Portsmouth to say feck ‘em (unless they know they have a sure thing £££ )

As for educating them, it would be useful to know what diversity training they have already had through their schools / academies before reaching this stage

Why do you have to be a black player to imagine that? Just imagine yourself in another country where you receive the same kind of abuse for being white or Christian how would you then feel? Abuse is abuse no matter what your ethnicity, physical or mental ability etc, etc.

"counter productive", I've been saying that for a long time and so have many others. But that old chestnut "closet racist" comes out.

Did you actually read what he asked me?

I can't imagine being racially abused as a black person. In the same fashion as I cannot imagine what it's like to be female being catcalled or whatever. Impossible.

Impossible? Or unimaginative 😉 :)

Punishment and Education. I would ask Ian Wright / John Barnes what the punishment should be and how the education should be done.
We can all understand what it's like to be on the receiving end of some things, but as white English, not racial abuse.

A good series of posts here by you Kurt. I fully agree, a 17 year old is no adult and, as an apprentice at a big football club he may have high views of his station that he needs to be disabused of.
My point in this discussion is to note that as clubs increasingly sign up children at ever younger ages then the views that their apprentices espouse on social media must, to some degree reflect the club's standards in educating their charges.

If any of the culprits are any good and have a value, the club will make a token punishment. If they are poor and have zero value they'll be kicked out.

HM Gov and the football authorities intend to ban from games for life any supporter who is found to has posted one of these vile, racially motivated messages. That appears to be a proportionate punishment. An immature estate agent has been suspended from his job for admitting sending one of the messages (and will likely be sacked for gross misconduct). However, some posters are suggesting that a young footballer, similarly found guilty, should be re-educated and not lose their career. Wouldn't this be double standards? Surely from day one, all academy footballers are educated (probably several times) with regards to the 'Respect' programme and one could therefore reasonably conclude that the individuals who then post racist messages to their peers are nothing but out and out racists......!

At 16/17? Young people need an opportunity to learn and should be given a chance.
