Portsmouth travel

Considering a last minute decision to go to Pompey. Wouldn’t mind taking in the Naval sights so maybe have a couple of days there to make it worthwhile.

Train or Car? What are others doing and where ya staying if stopping over. Only tentatively priced but probably looking at £350-£400

If you want to do the Dockyard then staying in or around Gunwharf Quays means your less than a 5 minute walk away

Plenty of restaurants in Gunwharf and the Customs House is a decent pub. There are a few pubs opposite HMS Warrior which are a bit, erm, average.

We are stopping in the ibis hotel next to the ground...£110 for 2 nights...definitely recommend visiting gunwharf Quay...& southsea...the travelodge in the city centre is good as well

I have been to Portsmouth plenty of times for the day with family.

Definitely recommend a visit to Portsmouth Dockyard. Brilliant nautical history which you could look at over a couple of days if you were stopping over as they sell annual passes. There’s a lot to see.

When I googled it just now I thought it was expensive - but a number of discount codes also seemed to be available. And I am getting progressively further out of touch with how much things cost.. if it gets any worse I will sound like a Yorkshireman…

Old Portsmouth is also worth a wander through. In fact the whole walk from Portsmouth Harbour to Southsea Pier through Old Portsmouth is worth doing. But the nautical history is Portsmouths selling point.

They are the main things I would look at. Gunwharf Quay is basically an outlet centre but does have a number of reasonably priced chain food outlets at the far end overlooking the harbour.

The proper City Centre (around Portsmouth and Southsea station) is just High Street UK and not worth a visit.

Oh and finally there’s the Spinnaker Tower. Notable for originally being painted in the red and white of its corporate sponsor - which led to an outcry from locals who were enraged it was painted in Southampton colours - changes were made!

With so much to 'cram in', do you really think you're going to be able to find time for a spot of navel-gazing?
