So, a midweek opportunity missed. We started slow. Really slow. Were we jet lagged from the Exeter trip? It was another point, another 0-0, but it’s at home this time. Home is where you want three times the points. I don’t just want points. I want goals. I miss goals.

It feels like goals and attacking football are in our DNA up on the Fylde. Year upon year, our town entertains visitors from up and down the country with our beach, piers, roller coasters and nightlife. We are many British natives’ charming childhood memories and weekend escape from the mundane office moments. At the moment, unfortunately, we are not a massively entertaining football team. In fact, we are currently the only team in League One to have won one and drawn two. Two of our three games have had no goals in them. It’s not bad, but it needs to get better soon.

It was certainly a night for patience. If we were bad, Vale were worse. The first half just didn’t contain any football. We had a lot of the ball. Vale only threatened as a result of our unforced errors. We had a so much of the ball that we sometimes even walked with it. Pool stats showed 63% possession.

CJ has pace but seems to have been forced to an area of the pitch where he can’t quite get in front of goal. Norburn works and then when he’s finished, he works even more. A brilliant addition. Kenny felt fairly anonymous until we took Carey off. I’m not sure what to make of Carey at the moment. He wants to play football, he’s capable, but there’s something missing and I wouldn’t mind seeing him come on as a 65 minute sub. Lyons was quiet and probably needs more time to get what Critchley wants.

Speaking of quiet, It was a poor game from Shayne and he lacked a close partner. Too many long balls that turned into nothing. He cut a frustrated little figure first half, and i suspect that second half he was just knackered.

Beesley's late header lacked the proper positioning. This could also be said of Virtue’s chance at Exeter and we could have nicked something from an otherwise bland encounter. Vale wouldn’t have been surprised, as despite their loud fans and giant team, they offered very little for me in terms of value.

Husband woke up second half and I’m glad to see that in Jimmy, Norburn and Casey, we have three leaders on the pitch who like a bit of swagger and fight.

At present, I’ll say that a typical Critchley approach is the feeling that we have over analysed the opposition. Whilst I do think that he tries to get the balance of attack and defence right, I do think that he’s being a bit too cautious at the moment.

There’s only so much you can say the same thing about Marv. We’re all thinking it. All I can say is that in his defence, he can defend. He’s got extra long legs that make extra last ditch tackles. We need to play to his strengths rather than forcing him into a position that isn’t naturally alright for him. He is not a ball playing centre half. He is not Van Dyke. He’s big Marv.

Casey was a bright star on an otherwise overcast sky. He showed the desire to win the ball back and make sure that if Vale got it, they didn’t have it for long. Speaking of bright, check out the new lad Jensen Weir. I feel like he’s got that bit of quality that we need. We didn’t see him much, but he moved well, and if you check out the Morecambe goals he scored last year, he doesn’t half have a good finish in him. We need that something. We need a fox outside the box.

Virtue looked alright, he wins the ball and has a nice bit of aggression in the tackle. But he seems to lack a yard of pace. I think he’ll grow into the season with the rest.

I want us to have a bit more attitude about us. I want us to want it more.

Some positives are the fact that we haven’t conceded or lost yet. But against better opposition, we will need to be way better than this.

Ok Critch, decent cup win aside, we’ve won one and drawn two. It’s not bad, but it needs to get better soon. It needs to get better starting from Saturday. Orient lost on the road tonight 3-2 and they’ll have to face another away trip to tangerine territory come Saturday.

So, on to Saturday. Bring them on.

Keep the faith, keep safe.

One word crap.

One of the worst performances I’ve seen in a long time just so negative.

For over an hour it was just hoofball to the smallest player on the pitch Lavery.

The crowd could see it why couldn't the snake? Yet he persisted with it for well over an hour it was just shocking.

Dougall and Ekpiteta shouldn’t be anywhere near the first team squad both way out of their depth.

I suppose the Critchley lovers will all be saying it’s another clean sheet so upwards and inwards.

Do us a favour Critchley give your Scouse mate a call in Saudi for a job. 🐍

Tippy tappy heading absolutely nowhere boring over complicated bollox with ineffective inverted wing backs and launching it long at one tiny striker who stands absolutely no chance of doing anything.

Thankful for an offside flag and Port Vale going to bits whenever they got near our goal.

Over trained over thought nonsense.

If the season improves as it goes on, these earlier games will make more sense. I think we’re still bedding in and getting used to each other and the returning manager’s ideas.

Think about Vales approach to the game, they also made it negative with 10 behind the ball.

I just don’t know where we’re going to get a goal from. Serious investment needed for me.

Marv CANNOT be asked to play in a team who want to base their play on possession. CJ CANNOT play in any team. If Lyons thinks he’s better than League One, he needs to be brought back down to earth with a bang. Kenny had a Kenny tonight.

Positives: Casey looked good again.

Like I said about the last few minutes of the first half. They freed themselves from the strict plays and routines and tried a bit of football.

He has proved to be a fantastic attacking right back, so we stick him at left back and play a left winger at right back...go figure !
Yes can anyone explain this to me please, I just don’t get it? what is this ‘inverted’ full/wing backs all about? Load of bollocks! Why don’t we try ‘inverting’ our defence and play them up front on Saturday

Vale only put 10 behind the ball last 15/20 minutes that’s when we started to play a bit of football.
They were the best team by some distance up to that point and any team away from home defending a 0-0 are going to put every player behind the ball and take the point.

Jesus Christ you’d thought we just got hammered 3-0.

Yeah that was shit, but we’re literally only three games in, a lot to sort out, yes, but we’ve barely even started.

Take a deep breath.

Does anyone know if Kyle Joseph is ever going to play for us? Or is he going to do a Trybull?

Swansea are absolutely laughing their dicks off at us.

We’ve sold our best striker at a cut down price due to the inclusion of an injured striker. 🤣🤣🤣

Playing against a team who had 7 put past them only 10 days ago I’d have thought we would have at least turned up tonight clearly not.

Still a great 0-0 though for some in particular Critchley.

Really struggling to find any positives. We didn’t concede but we should have so I don’t even think we look solid.

Why don’t the top clubs play with inverted wing backs? Completely baffled.

--------------------Grimshaw------------------------

Casey---------Pennington-------Husband

------------Norburn-----------Trybull-----------

Apter--------------------------------------------Weir

------------------------Carey---------------------------

-------------Beesley----------Lavery--------------

This would be my 11, flair players either flanks with Carey in the hole and a free role too. Shored up by two solid CM's and a flat back 3. Go for it.

Not sure what Sonny carey has done to be in anyone’s team - he’s offered far less than CJ first 3 games

I just feel there's much more from him to come as a player, not only that but he plays a different position to CJ. CJ off the bench on 70 when we've worn the opponent's down is better.

Stopped reading at 'the snake'. What a big ** baby you are.

Plenty of things he could have changed, but slow to react.
It looks like the one thing he isn’t going to tinker with is the overall formation.
Even within that there are things he can do to help the players produce a better tempo and a more fluid performance.
Some managers are stubborn and reluctant to do the things that the fans think are obvious. Is he like that? I don’t know but it feels like it tonight.
It was quite hard to fault his first time here as he got us promoted with an almost faultless run in and did very well enough in the first season in the Championship.
Has he been scarred by the Aston Villa and QPR (especially) experiences?
Seems way over cautious.
Still a reasonable start to the season but it needs a performance on Saturday to settle things down again.
Come on Critch, just bend with the wind a bit.

But is that not the approach adopted by the majority of teams playing away fixtures? The onus is surely then for the team playing at home to overcome this negativity by imposing themselves on their opponents and to begin to dictate play accordingly. Something we patantly failed to do in the game against Vale.

I suppose it is, but perhaps not quite to this extent. I think what I mean is sometimes a poor team make the other team match their low quality and the game gets stagnant, somehow, as a result.

Vale were there to be attacked and we just didn’t do it.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts and I hope against an Orient side who will have travelled up and are low on confidence he'll go for it on Saturday.
