Potter shows Critch how you leave a club

Potter wrote: "I hope that you will understand that at this stage of my career, I felt I had to grasp a new opportunity."

Potter was full of praise for the Brighton fans and believes the club will continue to thrive without him.

He added: "I will cherish the relationships I built in all aspects of the club. My players went above and beyond. My staff gave everything. At the heart of it were the Albion fans. On every matchday at the Amex, the connection with the team was strong. When we played away you came in your thousands to roar us on. I know what you have been through to see your club finally in a modern stadium and thriving in the Premier League. I felt it every time I stood on the touchline."

"To my successor, whoever that may be, I would say, congratulations. You’ll be working for a great club with a fantastic squad, supported by a great chairman and board. The squad are playing at a high level and will get better. Most of all, the supporters will get behind the team home and away."

OK, that's what he said. Here's what he meant....

I've had a great time at Brighton. You have great fans and I got on well with the Board. But, let's be honest. If you're going to win any silverware in this country you have to be at one of the big clubs. It's the same with wages. At Chelsea I'll be minted. So yes, it's all about securing my own future - not that of the fans. To be honest, once I'm ensconced in the Chelsea dug out, I won't have to give a toss about the also rans and Brighton's one of those. Soz but it's a fact; you can't win owt in this country unless you're at Man City...err, I mean, a big club. That's life suckers....deal with it. Right, I will now grant an audience to my bank manager.

Think the obsession over Critchley and how he left is weird at this stage
Not really pal. After the North stand busted their arses for him and our away support being exceptional and him giving it the old chest thumping and taking the adulation a simple "had to leave for personal circumstances but wow what a club and what amazing supporters" was both a simple and normal thing to do.

It was both rude and careless. Yes he's long gone now but it still leaves a sour taste.

I understand what your saying but to hell with it what happened cant be changed time to forget that & concentrate on Appleton & his crew 🍊

At least that way when Potter bumps in to any Brighton fans he can hold his head up high and I'm sure the fans will thank him for all his excellent work at the Amex and won't begrudge him his big money move that no sane manager would turn down in England, financially he's now made for the rest of his life.

On the other hand you could have sneaked out of the house in the dead of night with your suitcase packed without even leaving a note of explanation and moved in with your rich secret lover in her big mansion and left your adoring wife and four kids behind to fend for themselves.

At least that's what it felt like, after all there's ways and means of doing things....................

What a load of bullshit. Covering his arse because he pissed off for more money.
And that's why Critchley probably didn't bother. Even if you do everything right you will get this kind of reaction from some. After leaving it two weeks he probably thought it would be much worse.

Would you have made the move if you were Potter? I suppose 'job for life' Dyche at Burnley proved that there is no loyalty in football from clubs and so has he gone thinking big wage, get sacked, big pay out or does he really think he can do a job there?

I would definitely. More money and better prospects like jumping from Sweden to Swansea and Swansea to Brighton. He'll believe this is the next step for him. That's the life of someone being ambitious and trying to have a more significant management career than he did as a player. And why he puts statements out like this whenever he moves on his own terms because at least he can see the difference between being just a coach (which is what Critchley wants to be) and a head coach (which is what our board thought he was OK with being).

Potter was getting heckled by the Brighton fans last season for having his team fart about too much in home games and not being able to score goals from their possession count so there's no genuine loyalty on either side when it suits, only tolerance.

Be surprised if he lasts more than 18 months with how Chelsea are as they'll be expecting perfection, but that would be the same for anyone who goes in there.

Another reason is that if you have ambitions and turn down a big move it can be viewed as bottling it which could effect further opportunities.

Interesting that in his first full season at Brighton when they won a lot of plaudits they only finished on 41 points, which shows how unlucky we were to go down with 2 point less.

Critch was told to wait before releasing a statement seemed pointless when the nod came

I`ve thought for some time that after the incredible job he did in Sweden and now he`s taken Brighton to another level that he`d make a great England manager certainly far better than soppy spineless Southgate.

Neil Critchley was so popular and successful in a very short space of time, giving us all hope of even better things to come, that nothing he could have said would have been accepted by some on here.

Really ?

Well I think you need to read the mess he left us in and as for Potter - look at a certain painting in Turin called the Last Supper and who sneaks off for his Chelsea contract

I hate these people - they pretend they care ……. It’s their bank balance that’s all they care about - fans position, players futures, community aspirations don’t matter a jot - well hey don’t ever walk this way again in yer Porchse 4 x 4 fancy blue training top - they just wreck the game and are basically money grabbing demolition effectors

Being wanting to say that for a while - Potter or Critchley - all the same

Lets face it fella's, not one man on here would turn down a job move offering you four, five or even six times your current salary,in fact I bet many of you have jumped ship for far less, and lets not forget that neither Crtichley or Potter are Blackpool or Brighton fans, football is their career and if an opportunity to better yourself and your career and massively improve your bank balance presents itself you won't see them for dust, lets not pretend as well, every one of us on here would exactly the same as Critch and Potter have done and the only difference I can see is Potter did it with a damned sight more dignity and openess.

As for the Potter v Southgate conversation, I'm with 50's on this one, Potter is in a different league compared to Southgate and one day he will be our man.

No problem at all with people going for a better job

Sometimes you get offers you can’t refuse if you are ambitious and want to increase your bank balance

So in relation to NC and GP I have no problem with their decisions to move on

In GP case he did the right thing and went public with his thanks to those who had helped him on his journey including the Brighton fans

In the case of NC I’ve no doubt he privately thanked those at BFC but no thanks or acknowledgment to the fans who backed him and supported his team to achieve the success they had .

Yes the fist pumping the ye ye ye and heart shaped hands all seem rather hollow now but I reckon at the time they were genuine

As human beings we all deal with things differently and NC did what he did and left.

What disappointed me most is that a statement from him would have stopped the conspiracy theorists suggesting there was more to it such as fall outs and budget which impacted negatively on SS and the Board and was a load of nonsense .

NC could have stopped that by issuing a statement

Anyway move on . We have a good replacement in MA and things are looking good

I had said it ages before Critchley left that if another club came and offered him big bucks he would be gone in a flash, and i was hit with no way he has a plan here and all this shite. No manager in football is loyal when more money is offered especially in lower leagues.

So why as fans to we bother ?
if it was a blank piece of paper near a certain funeral prep, you’d be arrested
I think we should all wear Tangerine Crowns onnSat and see what happens - I’ll be sent to the Tower for even suggesting it !
Critchley’s departure Wasa joke - all respect from a supporter gone

I still respect him very highly a fantastic coach who got us back to the Championship & kept us up first time of asking. Not sure what the rant about paper is im not following yer countries news much but I assume something the Queens funeral.

I don't think anyone is disputing that. It's the no comment from him that grates with most Pool fans

I don't think thats true with everyone. Yes ,he will be getting more money and yes a better chance for silverware ,but that does not mean that he does not want Brighton to be successful and that does not mean he won't keep a close eye on Brighton's results . You can support a team without having to make money out of it. We are not all Oyston's.

It was a bit tongue in cheek.
