Potter to Chelsea?

The total and irreversible rule of commerce in professional football. What a big club demands, a big club gets. Why do we even bother to continue with this farce? The rule is that big clubs must take all and the small clubs simply exist to put a sheen of legitimacy on the idea that there's a sports competition in place.

Spot on, and unfortunately it is filtering down the leagues, especially in the Championship with parachute payments for the "big" clubs.

It’s only like a CEO of a small company going to a bigger one.

More money, more responsibility etc.

That doesn't address my point. On the pitch there is supposed to be the idea that every team has a sporting chance. If Potter has been doing wonders at Brighton then he should continue to see how well he can do. That's sport.

Why should he stay at Brighton if he is offered an opportunity he wants to do??

….or do you not believe in freedom???

In your logic he would never have joined Brighton in the first place as he would have to stay where he was and keep plugging away there!!

How stupid is that!!!!

As usual you look at things from an individualistic perspective: why shouldn't the individual do what he wants? My perspective is to look at professional football in a sporting context and to call out the farcical pretence of any competition when the big boys can do what they want, with as much money as they want - even if they are mired in debt. But then, your libertarian market philosophy always results in the rule of the giants. Sporting chance never comes into it.

Good move for Potter, hope Chelsea give him the time he’s had at his previous clubs. Fancied him for the England job after Southgate - would suggest that less likely now. Is England job a downgrade from Chelsea if he’s having success there? Would imagine so

I'd suggest the England job is a downgrade from Brighton.

Reminds me of the time Appleton wound him up....

Poor Billy Gilmour only needed to wait another week and would of had a manager that believed in him.

No, your post about him staying there for whatever reason is absolute rubbish.

If people were not allowed to move, he would never have been allowed to join Brighton for the same reason you say he shouldn’t join Chelsea.

Madness at its finest 👍

No not that one! The Brighton manager. Not yet finalised though.
It would be great though wouldn't it. Chelsea's best players finding out they're getting £90 a week off-season.

Classic case of virtually guaranteed a decent job for years v huge wage increase for potentially less than 12 months. Only the individual involved knows how they're going to react to such a situation, and no-one else is qualified to call it.

Not to mention having to stir their own porridge in a wheelie bin with a corner flag or whatever it was?

Sorry One, you've taken a completely different path on this one.

Also creates an opportunity for someone at Brighton.

I believe we should drag the economy and people up rather than dragging everyone down.
Have to agree with that.

If Critchley had gone to a bigger job then it would have been understandable if annoying,

Brighton will be fine anyway, reported they have succession plans in place.

The guy's done a brilliant job with little resources at Brighton, with the finances available at Chelsea he should do really well.

Nice to see an Englishman in a top managers job too 👍

There should probably be a rule whereby the transfer window also applies to managers. When the window isn't open you have to promote from within or employ an out of work manager.
Would be fairer and provide stability for the smaller clubs.

I find it mad how little managers 'cost' in this modern age of football. Apparently, Brighton are due a maximum of 13 million if he leaves in compensation, and that's an outlier. A good/shit manager absolutely makes and breaks a team, so how can an average left back or youth product like Gibbs White, Solanke, Brewster etc...be going for nearly double?
Tangential comparison, but I work in recruitment and our 'finder fee' increases with seniority. So i'll charge about 4 times as much for a brilliant CEO or Principal than say, a newly qualified primary teacher...because they are more valuable and harder to find.
