Qatar : State of Fear

On ITV now...

Harrowing stuff and not showing the Qataris and FIFA in a good light.

How on earth can the greatest football show on earth be played out in that corrupt state.
Don't see the problem to be honest I mean it's not like Germany, South Africa, Japan, Mexico, Argentina, Brazil, Russia, USA or any other curupt countries have had it

I mean you could probably make a case against every single country that has ever held if if you really wanted

mods note : edited for foul language.

Did hundreds of exploited construction workers die building stadiums in any of the other countries that you mention? 🤔

Probably yeah along with many other human rights issues if you really want to go down that route

Slave labour happens all over the world, the British empire and the Western World is built on it along with the European super power country's

I don't get the difference to be honest

The British Empire.....???? 😂

It's 2022 for goodness sake. 🙁
Yeah and?

Have you ever been to the Middle East, ever worked there, ever seen the thousands of migrant workers flying over for construction work week in week out

They aren’t forced to work under poor H&S conditions you know

No, I believe you don't.

Spent quite a bit of time in the Far East thanks and things are quite similar there.

If you don't think the Qatari's have exploited cheap and desperate labour then that's your choice.

Yeah maybe they have maybe they haven't but considering how small Qatar actually is in terms of population they have a hell of a lot of low skilled labour working there

Must have some top recruitment consultants

Quite simply the country is unbelievably wealthy through its oil, gas and petrochemicals, allowing it to fund untold extravagances whilst exploiting cheap labour in that region.

Doesn't need top recruitment, just flash the cash.

Turn over to ITVBE.
Jlloyd Samuel (deceased ex-Villa & Bolton player) documentary
Its on until 10.30pm.

Apart from all the other issues mentioned, for me it’s the hideous way they still treat women. Still having to ask permission from a male member of her family to carry out certain activities, only having half the rights of a male in court matters, quizzed in the street as to their actions and having to prove they have permission from their father to be out alone.
This is not Cultural, this is quite simply Dictatorship without any rights, all the Gulf States operate under a similar autocracy, it dismays me that the WC is being held here but does not surprise me whilst FIFA still has a say in where it is held, it’s time to Rip it up and start again!

A country vulnerable to a bloody big terrorist attack during the WC, I feel. Though I hope not. I would be concerned if I was there, but then again I chose not to be.

France 2016 literally had ISIS threaten the tournament.

There is a lot of anti-middle eastern sentiment around Qatar 2022. Whether people agree with it or not people live different ways of life all around the globe. Those in power in Qatar are not too far away from the right wing Christian powers that be in the US... the land of the free.

My view is and always has been, be part of the change. You never achieve anything moaning from your couch in Blackpool...

Dubai's laws / societal views have changed a lot in the 10 years I've been here and I believe this will be a catalyst for Qatar to make similar changes. Albeit, at its own pace.

Being in November is the only issue I have with this as it means I can't go

Who do we think we are to try and tell other countries how to act?

SOUTH AFRICA, BRAZIL & RUSSIA!!!!!!!

FIFA sell it as growing the game but that is utter garbage, it's about one thing and one thing only, money! I'll look forward to the England games but it just feels totally different from any other World Cup. Maybe that's location, maybe timing in the calendar. It's pretty bad that one of the main positives to it, is giving our injured players a chance to recover. 🤷🏽‍♂️

I know where you are coming from with that but how on earth can the football authorities and all the folk on here with their rainbow shoelaces support a World Cup taking in place in a country where homosexuality is illegal ?

Surely you can't preach about diversity in football and then go and let the biggest event take place there ?

To be honest, I'm now just trying to look forward to it on a football front and forget about all the political b0110x.

Only kidding Bus, wishing you both a safe and enjoyable trip.

That's certainly one way of looking at it Dubai.

Anyway, considering I said I was going to concentrate on the football, I've spouted far too much chite on this thread already so I'm out.

Wishing everybody at AVFTT a good World Cup, be that from Qatar, your armchair or from wherever you are boycotting it from.

It shouldn't be there on two counts.

Timing
Footballing culture and history in the area

The stuff about exploitation, bribes, etc etc is just icing on the justification cake.

Ok the timing is inconvenient for us & most European countries However are other world cups held during our summer not inconvenient for southern hemisphere & other leagues . .?
I object to this world cup being in Quatar for 2 reasons.

Human rights issues (slave labour etc)
Clear corruption on part of fifa got it there.

I can't ever recall feeling less excited about a forthcoming World cup as I do for this one , Maybe once it start that'll change I just have a gut feeling that England will flop

“700 workers who work in the ground handling, airside transport and cargo side of the airport will go on strike for three days from 18th November. It is said the strike action would cause disruption and delays at Heathrow terminals 2, 3 and 4. The WC starts on the 20th November.

Strike action will inevitably cause disruption, delays and cancellations to flights throughout Heathrow, with travellers to the World Cup particularly affected," Unite regional officer Kevin Hall warned. It is expected that Qatar Airways, which has put on extra flights for football fans, will be "hit heavily" by the strike action.
