Really poor appointment - thoughts

Well I guess those few who didn't want Rosenior got their wish. It's a dreadful appointment in my honest opinion, for several reasons.

1. If it's experience we wanted, Duff had a far better record and we had first dibs being a championship club.
2. Those who continually criticised Critchley - we've just appointed the manager who Critchley got the better of season before last, both in the p/offs and in the regular season. Despite Appleton having Brennan Johnson and Morgan Rogers in the team.
3. We already tried going back to a previous manager (and a much more successful one) and it failed. We're repeating the same mistake.
4. SS statement shows they're aware of how unpopular he'd be, and yet did it anyway. You're customers views matter Simon, and should be very high up the list of importance when making these decisions.
5. I don't understand why we haven't gone and found another U23 coach - it's proved successful last time and there are loads out there, not just Rosenior. We changed direction with Critchley, and it worked. What we needed was continuity of that strategy, not another change in direction.
6. I can't believe that out of all coaches and managers available today, that someone who left a league one club because they had a poor season, was the best available.
7. He's already left us once before at the drop of a hat. While I don't blame him considering what he was up against, he then got sacked three months into the Rovers job. He isn't a great decision maker clearly.
8. If it's true that BM used to be his agent, then that doesn't sit well with me at all. We need someone who has the right track record and credential, not just someone BM is mates with.

I support the board generally, and SS who is making massive investments. But this decision surely leaves a question mark on their judgement. When you have to throw in a ticket price reduction as a sweetener to fans, wouldn't it just have been better to appoint someone more suitable? I know some don't like negativity and I'll be buying my season ticket, there's no doubt about that. But I'd be amazed if MA lasts more than 18mths - I'm just being honest. We'll all be left thinking what a waste of time that was. Sorry, but just how I feel about it. I hope he, and we, do well and if that happens then I will say so on here. Fingers crossed.

I mostly agree. A few considerations though....

1. Duff has no experience above the bottom half of L1. Appleton has managed higher. And I do think Rosenior lacks experience and good youtube interviews don't prove much.
2. Agree.
3. Agree.
4. Agree a lot. Customer views matter.
5. Not all U23 coaches are equal - we got an exceptional one with a lot of coaching experience and quality time at Liverpool.
6. One poor season which he started with cancer and missed a chunk of the early season. Lincoln were good the season before.
7. I don't blame him for leaving Blackpool but he came here with zero conviction - it was all about his needs. He's a tough character though, he hasn't shrunk from following the Cowleys at Lincoln and now Critch, and bounced back quickly from cancer treatment. That's a good quality.
8. Yes. Doesn't sit well with me either. But Sadler appears to have been fully involved. So it's on him too.

Appleton got the better of Critchley in the league games. They won at BR and 2-2 at Sincil Bank on a day we played really well. Out of the other play-offs teams Lincoln were the ones to avoid.

I see it as a safe appointment. We are less likely to get relegated under Appleton than Rosenoir but less likely to succeed than what was expected under Critchley. Maybe that's where we are as a club right now. A steady 2/3 years mid-table before a new push with updated facilities.

I don't believe for a second that more than a handful of people remember the style of play for an 11 game period a decade ago so a lot of this complaining is just noise for the sake of it. We won't know whether Appleton is a success for at least 12 months, possibly longer. If you can't hack that as a Blackpool 'supporter' then sack it off for the coming season and watch from afar.

Rosenior didn't sound as if he wanted to be here. Appleton does. Now let's just see how it plays out on the pitch over the next year.

He's obviously a bit of a street fighter, pretty gutsy, isn't frightened of a challenge ,and probably less demanding than some other options. He may be prepared to work with existing staff etc. More old school, which may not be a bad thing in some respects. At this stage of his career he may appreciate a club that supports him in ways that matter, more than a young guy starting out trying to make a name and climb the ladder to the dream.

More pragmatic I guess. A pragmatic decision to employ a pragmatic manager.

I respect him for fighting off cancer and fighting to keep his job. He deserves a break.

So I wish him well. Am I coming to terms with my disappointment? A bit, yeah.

He’s clearly got an eye for a good loan signing and managed to secure them too

I think we also need to remember it took cajoles for Appleton to come her knowing he is not wanted by a large chunk of the fan base, has nothing banked credit wise and so is under pressure massively from day one - a few bad results in the first half dozen or so games and the pressure on him and the board will be enormous. He will be aware of the feeling towards him re last time and therefore you would imagine comes here with something to prove which is not a bad thing in my book.

Critch only bested him in the play off final (right time to do it). He has a track record of failing at the last hurdle though, not that we'll be near the playoffs this season anyway..

It might have taken balls to come back but let's not forget what he was; an out of work manager.

If Jorge Grant’a shot had gone in it would have been game over in the play offs. Fact is his Lincoln side were a really good attacking team who played attractive football and just fell short at the final hurdle - no criticism in that for me. Also he had some very very good loans which shows clubs trust him with their better players. A lot of clubs bigger than Lincoln were after Brennan Johnson so the fact that Florist sent him there says a lot. Hope we can benefit from that too with one or two good Prem loans.

True about the style of play, I don't remember a single thing about it to be honest.

Fair comment. Appleton wanted to be here more than Rosenior did, it would seem. Rosenior wants pamperdom, I think.

Successful Blackpool managers tend to be pragmatists, and characters, cos they need to be, like Ayre and Holloway. The club wants to be all professional and compete with the bigger boys, but we don't have the infrastructure or the player budget, as things stand. Critch probably arrived too soon to be anything other than a short term affair, a stepping stone for him, to the EPL.

Appleton took Sunderland out over 2 legs, and then just ran into Kenny Dougall on Kenny Dougall Day. Appleton seems to know a good player when he sees one, judging by at least some of those he took to Lincoln. Bloomfield Rd is not an easy place for teams to come and get a result, if the fans are behind the team - so he will rise or fall according to how that goes in the first 2 or 3 months of the season, I guess.

I've just looked at Lincoln City fans' reactions when it was announced a couple of months ago that Appleton was leaving their club

Makes interesting reading

@lucalcfc: Shocking. Best manager we could ask for. Thank you for everything! Top top gaffer

@Robbeezley: Thank you Michael, like all fans we weren’t happy when losing but you’ve defo done good for us as well so I wish you well

@PaulCarrott3: I really hope that was Michael’s decision and not ours. Massive blow for @LincolnCity_FC

@Jamesbenno7: Got a feeling that in 12months we might regret this decision. Top coach/manger but unfortunately injuries and players not working out have cost him. I would still have kept him as we’ve seen when he gets it right it really is something! Thank you MA for 3yrs

@nicktparker: Thanks to Michael Appleton for all that you’ve done for our club. There have been highs and lows but I really appreciate all your efforts to get us to the brink of the championship and to keep us in the 3rd tier for the longest period in my lifetime. All the best for your future.

@jackreed14: Michael, thank you for everything you have done! Shame to see you go sooner rather than later but wishing you all the best in your new adventures! #impsasone

@impyblue: Thanks Michael you don’t know what you’ve got till it’s gone. You deserve better

@SamComins1: Good Luck Michael. You got us so close to the championship and we’ll never forget that. Yes this season was a struggle but our league on status is assured for next season so we thank you for that. Good luck on your next challenge. UTI.

@redimps76: Be careful what you wish for. He has done a great job on a limited budget.

@GeorgeBassUK: Gutted, we’ve played some of the best football I’ve ever seen in the red and white, particularly last season. Thanks for the memories Michael and best of luck in the future!

@mitson16: Very shocked all the best to him but we need to move forward and we need to get a experience league one or championship manager. We move on #ImpsAsOne

@smee1966: That’s a bit of a shock. Felt the time was right with D&N but feels a bit early for this and we could have kicked on next season. Wish MA and his family all the best. Wont be surprised if he goes to a club with a bigger budget to build a team wi

@kazziehuddy: Honestly gutted but thanks for all you have done and all the best in the future

@churchybabes: Nooooo, I didn’t want the rumours to be true. I’ve always supported him and I for one will miss him. Thank you Michael and good luck for the future

@maharby: There will be those on here applauding this, I think you need to be really careful what you wish for. Remember if it wasn’t for Michael’s reputation we wouldn’t have seen the likes of Brennon Johnson in a City shirt. This is not a good thin
@JordanWTFane07: I think people have underestimated how hard it is for smaller clubs after an unsuccessful playoff campaign, just look at what’s happened to Barnsley, we may not have made the progress wanted, but staying in the league is still a success and a lot of that is down to Appleton

@Charli321: I’m gutted by this. To all the haters, be careful what you wish for. #ImpsAsOne #ThankYouMichael

@NGlliver: Damn shocked. Let’s hope we get someone actually good in and not just fall into the same traps most league 1 clubs do

@harte_sam: In shock, all the best! Last season is a great memory

@andyhelson: Just seen this. Gutted, properly gutted. Big was the person to take us forward. Some of the best performances I’ve seen at the Bank.

@jordbrown96: He can leave with his held high. Divided opinion among the fan base at times, but to get us one game from the Championship and giving us memorable wins against huge clubs, while battling a horrendous injury crisis, is something he can be proud of. Best of luck, Michael

@happinessjohn83: In shock!! Surprised and very disappointed but good luck for the future Michael.

@adamf_99: Can’t believe this. No words

@WillStacey14: Gutted doesn’t describe it, thank you Appleton for everything you did! Sean Dyche will now take the wheel and guide us to the promise land

Critchley used us a stepping stone to go back to answering to other coaches.

Well he’s got bollocks coming back to the club when the majority don’t want him critchley didn’t have any that’s for sure. I’m glad it’s all sorted now looking forward to the new season 👍🏻

Maybe we need to be careful talking about balls and bollocks. Apparently he's recovering from testicular cancer.

So a small step up at a smaller PL club?
Big step up IMO. There's loads of U23 and academy coaches out there. Not many coaches working every day with EPL first team players. Under a manager who admits he's not really a coach himself.

Weren't all these quotes from when he stepped down with cancer.

Blackpool obviously isn't the attractive opportunity we all think it is.
The new training ground is probably 2 years away at least so any candidates being shown round would be greeted by Squires Gate.
Appleton has already seen that, probably noticed the improvements and needs a job.

I kind of meant that we finished above them in the league, but I take your point.

Good point on coming in after the Cowley's Voy, forgot about that. It was a tough act to follow after their success.
I still think there are many better candidates out there, but it's done and I will look forward to the season as I always do. The one thing I think in our favour is that SS willl want to be proved right and the only way that might happen is if MA has the funds to improve the team. We're going to probably have something in the region of £4-5m to spend on players with the Critchley compensation and Bowler proceeds (assuming he goes), which if spent correctly will at the least ensure our survival in this league imo.

I suspect we have just spent the critch compo. 😆

4 years! Hopefully lower pay than Critch's revamped contract.

4-5m won't ensure our survival, good management will.

I could be a really good appiontment, only time will tell.

Having had time to digest it, im not as pissed off as i thought i would be.

Give the bloke a fair chance.

I'm struggling to understand how so many posters I respect on here can like this OP. This is going to be OK, hopefully more than OK. I really think it will. I'm not just giving it the Ra Ras here, I genuinely think this could kick us on.

Still pretty underwhelmed, but I hope he does prove me wrong and at least it's done and we can move on.
We, as fans, have no say in who the board appoints as manager or who they sign to play for our club. Some we want, or think we do, and some we don't want or think we don't and in either case we can be proved wrong.

We have to give him a chance and let his football do the talking, we see ourselves as a very different football club to the last time he was here (and thank god) so the chances are he will be different too. Time to start supporting and stop moaning.

Have you got a breakdown of this 4-5 million please? I’d be very much interested to know our transfer budget for the season and how much the bids for bowler have been.

We are definitely very different from the last time he was here. A rolling contract , with a chairman he couldn't get a straight word out of, and no chance of bringing players in. Any manager would have walked in the circumstances.

It could be because a lot of people also think it's a poor appointment? We don't have to agree with everything the club does, and I think we could've got better.

But I'm not going to have a vendetta against him while he's here. I've said what I think, and that's it. I wholeheartedly hope he's a roaring success and I'm proven embarrassingly wrong. Genuinely.

What about Appleton makes you think it will kick us on? I'm not looking for an argument, I'm just interested to hear the opposite viewpoint.

That was hours ago, they were in the anger phase.

Really poor appointment.
Suggests to me the Board isn’t fit for purpose.
They’ve taken this long to come up with this shïte.
Couldn’t be less impressed. 😡👎🏻

There really doesn't seem to be any money in the club for whatever reason. (hence Appleton) I think we took the cheap option. And as they say buy cheap buy twice. Probably gone by Christmas as he only needs to not start well and the fans will be on his back. His popularity stinks.

The board don't think so otherwise they wouldn't have given him 4 years.

I reckon he'll do alright, am hoping obviously, but I reckon he will.

Here's a few randon things then. I think that he is the determined type, that he's been a manager before and is not trying it our for the first time (remember Cardiff home and Preston and Gillingham away for instance), that he knows in his heart of hearts he legged it last time, therefore that hopefully some part of him will consider this unfinished business, that he has very solid all round knowledge and is known and respected in the game, that he must have been convincing to Simon Sadler and the others interviewing. I'll admit the Nobber bit is taking some swallowing but we've got over worse in our time.

This.

I agree. He speaks well and has a decent pedigree.
The club and team won't benefit from negativity.
