Rhys Williams…

When you sign a young lad on loan, more often than not they’re gonna make mistakes. He obviously deserves time and is still improving as a player .

But really haven’t been impressed so far. Every game I’ve seen he’s looked a liability.

Really hope he turns it round as I’ve been rooting for him particularly since that fake message leak.

Maybe he needs a rocket up his arse, West Stand Ultra stylee. Works for some. If it doesn't, well, C'est la vie.

I was critical of him on the match thread, however to get done twice like he did against the same player he was a liability. If you haven’t got pace playing in that position then there isn’t much hope as you either have it or not. Playing at Liverpool there are quality players around you who may get you out of trouble, however at this level you will get found out.

I don’t think we’re, as a team, in a situation to be able to afford mistakes at the back. After being pulled against Blackburn at HT and pulled again today I think his games as a starter may be over.

He played the full game against Blackburn! He was taken off at half time against Bristol City.

Was really poor today.

Too slow and with not reading the game as well as Keogh he gets caught out too much.

Looked like their gaffer noticed the space behind Gabriel at half time and targeted it. Appleton didn't mess about reacting though and decided to save him from himself again. Watched him tell Jim Husband to go and warm up and then as soon as RW couldn't control the ball to keep it in play he was called back and straight on.

Just need to make a decision on that defence now, whatever the set up. If Williams is on a deal where if he's available he has to start then it's going to be difficult but looks like he could do with a breather if numbers allow or MA or someone to give him the arm around the shoulder treatment. Very shy for a big guy but his height is an advantage.

Not sure what the issue is -but he is not all that. Maybe that’s the problem- until now people have told him he is. This is the most difficult league in Europe imo and that’s why PL teams send their young prospects into it. Not everyone makes it. I really hope Rhys does, but I don’t think just being from Liverpool = automatic selection in our squad. I really rate Thornily - please extend his contract.

He played ok in the Reading, Swans and QPR game, but he wasn’t really exposed. However I think the signs were there, a real lack of pace, which can be over come through positional sense and that smelling danger ability top defenders possess. I want him to be a success here, couldn’t give a toss who he supported as a lad but Jesus he’s bad at the moment. How he’s getting in over Thorneily is beyond me and makes me wonder if there’s a stipulation in the agreement to play him.

The positive flip side is how much better Appleton is at in game tweeks as compared to Quitchley. Quitch would have just stood there bemused at what was happening as we lost that game. Appleton changed personnel and formation to stabilise the whole team and it worked when he brought Husband on.

Need to watch match back to revisit how well we defended some pretty good corners. Rhys May have done better than I thought, though his defensive work on right side was pretty woeful.

His strength is in the air and pinging passes compared to some.

Some of his defending if alright but he seems to get done for pace so easily. Also not really reading the game like Keogh.

Never like to be critical of our players but Rhys does seem to be struggling at the moment and it came as no surprise that Appy took him off again and changed the shape of the team. We sent Casey out on loan to FGR but when he played for us he never let us down, we should have stuck with him IMHO.

I spoke with a Swans fan in work last week and he couldn’t believe we took this kid on. He watched him at Swansea last season and said he wasn’t ready for Championship football, maybe League 1 at best.

Not often you get a centre back being subbed unless it's due to injury. He may be on the Liverpool books but he ain't Championship quality, so slow, badly positioned, loses concentration and does not have a left foot. Thorniley or Husband for me every single time.
He was playing right back to allow Gabriel to fill one of the many vacancies in midfield.

Still far too early to write him off, it is an eye opener for him, as Liverpool are rarely under the cosh so he needs to adjust his game. I think he will come good

Yea he's done some good stuff, some not so good.

He'll have a part to play, just a little concerning being caught out.

There was one point yesterday he lost his man and just stood with his arms on his hips as if that was it. Had he have continued to follow him then the guy eventually had to cut back and there would have been another chance for him to win the ball. Just stood with your ams on your hips if you don't win the ball isn't going to get you regular first team football!

He is 20 or 21
He will come good, we need to get off his back, if Appleton is happy to start him I will go with that.
no one’s on his back as far as i can see, on this thread at least but there is no denying at the moment he is poor and when we have a ready made replacement (Thorniley) fans are entitled to have their say.

Needs to be Marv and Thorniley going forward, just hope we haven’t got an agreement with Liverpool where he needs to start every game he’s available for

I doubt there's any written contractual obligation to play him, but the lending club will obviously expect him to play, and the borrowing club will want to keep the lending club happy, so the player has to be given a chance to prove himself, and if he can't then the loan needs to be ended in January, and he needs to go out to a lower level instead.

Correct

You just wouldn’t loan someone if you were forced to play him every time he’s available

He got subbed because he was being outpaced by their winger and he was on a yellow . MA did the right thing

Thorniley gets the nod from now I think. Williams will get another chance, I hope he succeeds because he seemed to struggle at Swansea and is starting to here too, maybe not up to it at this level at this stage of his career.

Although Reese looks slow and cumbersome he was brought in for his height . If Madine was not coming back for set plays then we would have nobody in the back line apart from ME that is particularly tall . I don't think he sets the world on fire ,but he does do the easy things well . Never tries to dribble and passes it to Dom to take it up field. Solid at this point in his career in my point of view.

Agree on this thread but matchday thread was different. Young lad played out of position and Eki was garbage first few games, kept out of side by Nottingham.
Thorniley is good though
