Worked his way up from the academy to be Gary Bowyer’s assistant before being poached for a job with England, then assisting Rob Edwards at Forest Green and Luton …

… but apparently he looks like someone who has read a book from cover to cover so can’t possibly be considered as manager

Rob Edwards was the in-possession coach, I believe. Beginning of a beautiful relationship.

Why is it a strange career move to go to a more prominent role in a smaller set-up?

I don’t think its strange. Steve Cooper won the u-17 World Cup as manager. His first club manager role was with Swansea in the Championship.
