Rooney...

How many great players went on to be great managers?

I can only name a few in recent history, Cruyff, Guardiola, Ancelloti, Dalglish...

Struggling after that?
Brian Clough could be added to the list. His playing career ended at 29 I think - and he was reportedly a very good player.

Two top players for the flunk list - Lampard & Gerrard.

True Bull. Its ironic that another goal scoring great at Manchester United, whose all time goals record at MU was superseded by Rooney, also failed the test when trying to transfer his deadly skills on the pitch to management off it. PNEs desire for Bobby Charlton to make that transfer as their manager never came to pass.
Bobby Charlton didn't fail at PNE, he did a fantastic job 😆

Thick. As a manager one would assume a requirement would be a modicum of intelligence, begs the question who were the thickest, Rooney or the board appointing him.
Joins Gerrard, Lampard and of course Ince but, like them, there'll be another mug who employs him based on his playing rather than managing.

Your right Clough was a good one, but for me he was lost without Peter Taylor.

He definitely wasn't as good without Taylor but I think it was also Forest cutting back financially that limited his later success. To be fair to him, he did well on a bit of shoestring after Taylor had gone (up to that last disastrous season) and brought along players like Des Walker, Stuart Pearce, Neil Webb and so on - won the league cup several times, kept them mostly up towards top of table and got to that FA Cup final they really should have won after Gazza went mad.
