Rory Gallagher….

I can think of plenty of other Irish musicians who deserve that accolade more. He was okay.
Probably down to the fact he in widely considered one of the greatest guitarists ever. You'll find him on every "greatest guitarists of all time" lists, I imagine they must be proud of that in Ireland.

He’s not really my cupán tae but when Jimmy Hendrix was asked how it felt to be the greatest guitarist in the world he replied, ‘I don’t know. Go and ask Rory Gallagher’

Stiff, Undertones & Morrison are all Northern Ireland......so they (may not) count

I think Bono must be sitting in his $25m mansion with his 9 Grammy's, 150m records sold wondering if it's worth doing the next world tour......

Well deserved, turned down offers to join both Deep Purple and the Stones, which shows the level he was at.

I was watching late night telly back home in the 70s. It might have been a Whistle Test production but on came this Live at Montreux concert by Rory Gallagher. I knew of him but didn't know him. I was mesmerised. I thought he was absolutely amazing - what he could do with a guitar was off the scale.
I've not got into a lot of heavy guitar stuff but that was something else.

Van Morrison for a kick off, The Undertones, I was just found him a bit samey and U2 must be in with a shout too
The Undertones SLF (for others) and U2 are not singular musicians.

So probs right, no deffo right. Do'R of the Cranberries would have had a mention- she was the worlds highest earning female musician at one time, even when Madbird was selling plenty

Read some extracts from a biography about him that described him as being “ married to his guitar”, totally fixated on his music, someone who was unable to form close relationships with people and was a loner. Still his guitar playing was superb.

I can't stand U2 but love Van Mission, even if he is the grumpiest fucker in the World. Van Morrison has to be the best Ireland have surely?
Perhaps, that's exactly what I am saying . I've actually met Van Morrison, and he is as you say "the grumpiest" but in my view he and Rory are chalk and cheese . I love them both but wouldn't want to choose between them. U2 can't compare to those two.
A band I really liked were Horslips, who I also saw live.
