Sadler’s Lament

He’s backed his manager to the hilt, sold our proven goal scorer and now has to watch helplessly as Critchley not because of injuries plays our expensive by league one standards players out of position week after week.

He’s been slow to react in the past, never owns his mistakes and knows all he can do right now is grit his teeth and have faith things will improve. That said if we’re lower mid table come the end of November I hope he will for the good of the club make changes.

So in that case you both want him gone now?
That’s fine if that’s your view. Clarity is good.
If he stays and I can see Sadler giving him until Christmas, we will be somewhere between 14th and 20th and it won't get any better. He's poor manager and in my opinion it was a terrible decision taking him back. It should have been Dobie or someone completely new. Of course this is all conjecture, but from what I have seen this season I can't see us getting anywhere near promotion with Critchley in charge.

And if we are not lower mid table by November are you then happy for Critchley to stay?
Stupid question. I care that we as a club do as well as we can. If Critchley does what any manager is supposed to do which is organize resources for maximum efficacy I’m happy. That after preseason and the games thus far he hasn’t is worrisome at this juncture.

Why is it stupid? The statement was if we are mid or lower by November then he has to go. So my question is a fair response. If we are 10th then is that good enough?

Don’t be cute it doesn’t suit you. I have nothing against Critchley. If he was fulfilling the manager mandate I’d be fine. But he’s not. He’s playing players out of position in formations they are not suited for and his data (points and position) tell him that loud and clear. He’s wasting time and resources. If we were moving onward and upward in November I’m fine. If we are floundering or treading water I’m not.

Critchley won’t get sacked unless it’s looking desperate at Christma. However he needs a No 2 imposing on him without delay. A no 2 is essential after the No 2 he’s delivering.

I can’t understand why it hasn’t happened.

I can understand the frustration with the manager as it is his tactics that are responsible for where we are results wise. He pledged attacking football to get the fans behind the team but as in previous game, the football is becoming painful to watch with players standing there rooted to the spot not knowing whether who or when to pass the ball to, and repeatedly passing backwards without any attacking intent.
Why are we being served up this sort of negative football after his pledge to attack from the outset?

I would not leave it until Christmas. The end of November would be my limit. If it goes longer player's confidence could be shot and the ability to get in the playoffs or get an automatic promotion will be gone.

Unfortunately, getting a firm to do a statistical analysis of all the applicants is just too moneyball and not a lot of football.

He’s astute at what he does, but he’s made another error. He needs someone alongside him who can make these good decisions… sadly it appears that everyone we get ends up getting sacked, gardening leave, or moves on.

I’m perplexed by this start to the season.

Shambolic

The fact he thinks Connolly is a left wing back is a worry enough.🤷‍♂️
What bothers me is needless stupidity. He's not pigeon holed into making drastic player changes because of injuries. He's seen enough of players in different roles and knows by our goals, wins and league position if what he wants to happen is happening. Under Sadler and Critchley there is no pretense. We are a breeder club so as a glorified premier league reserve team we do have to be patient as players develop but in our current mode no development is taking place. We were needlessly relegated last season and we're needlessly throwing away points in league one. Defeat by Wycombe? Only worse would be Preston or Fleetwood. I'm embarrassed by today.

There is a very real possibility that with the club loaded up with Sadler's mistakes debt (interest-free loan) our club could sooner or later end up in trouble. A man or I should say a boy in a man's body that never owns his mistakes is a liability, not a savior. Time will tell and I' hope I'm wrong.

8 matches until November.
Reading home
Barnsley away
Derby home
Charlton away
Stevenage home
Oxford away
Cheltenham home
Peterborough home

So 5 home, 3 away, what do we think we’ll get from those 8 games?

Hmmm, the question is a little vague. With the current team/formation? 5 points. Lavery back nine points. Playing players in their correct positions in a formation that plays to their strengths 18 points. Wishful thinking and tangerine glasses on, 24 points. What do you think our tally will be?

As you say it depends what the manager (I’m not sure that’s the right title) does. Assuming he sticks with his system he prefers, I’d say 9 points would be optimistic.

I'm a glass-half-full kind of person and even I can't see nine points from the current line up/set up. I like your optimism.

.. and the difference now is we have options .. that said am all for stability and would stick with Critchley .. and see how it pans out at the end of the season.

No throwing away a season would be foolish and costly. If he continues not getting the best from his players by the end of November he has to go. Football is not like most businesses. Fail and you still get a lucrative payout and as Appleton proves even another job.
