Morning all,
Has anyone done the Scotland 500 route?
Booked a camper van and initial plan was head to isle of sky and maybe Cairngorms for a week.
Any recommendations ??
will be stopping wild not on camp sites

Be sure to get to Applecross. Bealach na Ba is a high level hairpin pass that can’t be beaten. And neither can the Applecross inn at night.
Did a charity bed push over the Bealach na Ba a few years ago , and stayed at the Apple cross Inn, great little pub with great food... As mentioned I would buy a midgey net for your face . I was wondering why people had them on, then I realised the next morning 😂

I've cycled about half of it including all the west coast part. Campervans kept getting in the friggin way! 🤣

Preferred direction is clockwise.

West coast is amazingly beautiful. Watch out for idiots in low slung cars who cannot see over blind summits but fly on anyway. Some bits of the road are probably no wider than your camper, so make sure you can reverse comfortably, passing places are intermittent.

There may not be as many wild camping spots as you expect, as it is extremely busy. Plan ahead, in the Highlands we are sick to death of camper vans just dumping their chemical toilets in lay-bys.

Give us a wave as you pass through Aviemore if you visit the Cairngorms 👍

They say Hadrians Wall is east to west but we did the opposite and it was brilliant

I lived on the North Coast for 12 years, returned to the North West in 2010 just as this route was being promoted …
Sadly it has become a mill stone for the locals due to the unthinking arrogance of many camper van owners. Too many vehicles in a place with very little infrastructure for visitors more used to having “tourist services” on every corner…
Not sure how it will end up.
Sorry, cannot get the link to work…

Quite a lot of camper vans etc on the route in early June. Very beautiful and fantastic scenery. Hard to find a place to watch the play off final!

I can imagine the locals getting peeved off, I’ve never been that far up so looking forward to it.
Did you ever see the northern lights when you lived there ?
Read something the other day saying sept and Oct usually good weather .

Yes we saw some really great displays. Autumn is generally the best time and there is an app … Aurora Watch (?) that give you the probability of seeing it in any given area / day.
Also Autumn can be stunningly colourful as the trees and bracken start to die back.
Seascapes can be full of interest, it real surfing time also a variety of Whales and Orcas migrate through the Pentland Firth.
I love the place, didn’t want to leave 😂
