Shed, man cave etc

So looking at building one in April (get the rubbish weather out of the way and save some cash) I’ve measured around the 12x8 mark, anyone got any advice for me? Looking to have a little bar and possibly a seating area. What would the Ballpark Cost be etc? Thanks in advance.

I saw one online that once the concrete base had been laid used pallets as the walls and roof with Kingspan slid inside it then marine treated only on the outside and normal ply or OSB boarding on the inside

Damp proof the outer marine ply with visqueen and then cladding over that

Roof done very similar from what I can remember but felted and then you needed doors and windows that the fella making it obviously knew what he was doing with

Found in on Pinterest and it looked really smart and I'd imagine cheap as the pallets could be sourced for free !!

I built one at the bottom of the garden, a bit bigger than you're planning and my advice would be, depending on what it's going to be made from, larchlap like a normal shed or thick inter connected 'planks' like a log cabin you'll need to think about insulation and how it can be heated in the winter as it's no fun sitting in it and having to wear a coat. I ran power and water (just a long stretch of garden hose running from an outside tap) into mine. It's made up of two rooms, the bigger one is a proper bar with traditional pub stools etc and a TV on the wall to watch the mighty with a pint in hand. We use WiFi extenders for the TV. I suppose it depends on what you're planning on doing with it when it's built but I'd suggest going the extra mile in what facilities it has, otherwise you won't get the use out of it if it's not as comfortable as being in the house

These lads are decent and will probably build you something to spec, unless you want to do it all yourself

I looked around and found a website called Wayfair, and they had a good selection and were half the price compared to a lot of your typical garage / shed companies. It also came flat packed. Managed to knock it up with a mate in about 5 hours. However it depends on how adept / practical you are. Im not, so you could probably do it quicker 😄

I built mine approx 7 years ago and it's been well used for entertaining and working in. I can provide advice if required but the main things I'd say are:

Install a toilet if you can
Have water and electricity run to it
Hardwire (cat5) internet
Insulate insulate insulate
If possible install radiators and/or a log burner

Try Tuin.co.uk 40mm log cabins. There is loads of info on there in the blog section that may be helpful.
Put mine up 4 years ago and is only slightly larger at 15 x 9. It took 2 of us a couple of days to put up after the slab had been cast including treating the wood before erection. It is still top notch, and can’t see it needing anything more than a biannual treatment to keep it sound for the foreseeable. As OTR says insulate it for year round use, i did the floor and put a warm roof on and it worked a treat. Been using a small oil filled rad which works fine, but have just bought some far infra red panels to try this autumn as they are less energy hungry. I don’t have a bar, just shelves for the whisky - Cardhu gold reserve being a current favourite.
Long-shanks (nice shed-decent username) posted whilst i was typing and offers sound advice and has full on luxury in comparison, all in for the slab, services and cabin before fit out I was at around £3200.

An interesting fact about Pinterest is that everything on there is unachievable in reality unless you're actually a professional.

I'm useless at all this but really fancy one. Can anyone recommend someone/company in the area that would provide hhe building, electrics etc.?

This is a full on major building project👍😁, looks great, plumbing, heating log burner, bit of a upgrade over a potting shed.....😎

Unbelievable this! I was having the discussion with MRS Spion literally this morning about the very same.

Wont be until next year when we pack in what we are doing now and move to new pastures but I said I want a man cave sort of thing.

Basically (and I need to do a bit more planning) I want to have a darts set up in the cave, a bar, tv and a place to display all my Blackpool and England stuff. Thispost is very timely. I am absolutely dog sh1t at diy so useful to have an idea of costs etc thanks guys.

That's fantastic I'm jealous. I've made a start as I've stripped 2 pallets down! Seriously I've got enough space although getting the pipes for a macerator loo/sink & other services would be a bit of a pain as it's a fair & awkward distance, it would be easier to use solar power/battery/inverter capture rainwater for loo & send it into the pond in the garden behind 😜 At what size build do you need planning permission.

Thanks for the kind comments people much appreciated. I've loads of pics of the build if that's of interest to people and I'm happy to share.

When I started I didnt really have any building skills of note but I've mates who I called upon who have and I worked with them on it and just learned as I went along. Was really enjoyable and probably took approx 12 months or so from start to finish.

All cables (water, electric, internet) come from the house and I dug a trench approx 1 foot deep (meant to be 2 foot + deep but I hit rocks and had a stinking hangover when I started that day so I thought fuck it 🤣) and put lagging around it and put it all inside drain pipe then buried it again. Had no issues with it all.

With the toilet I knew next door had a waste pipe that ran behind the room I built so I offered to replace 6 fence panels on our shared boundary to tap into their waste pipe from my new toilet. Dug down and found it and although a messy job it was a lot easy that digging a waste pipe trench from the top of my garden to the drain at the other end.

YouTube is your help when it comes to stuff and just give it a go. Honestly if I can then anyone can!!!

Seriously it's bloody brilliant, I bet lockdown wasn't much of a chore?

Yeah did make it easier, like I said me and Mrs Shanks both work from there as well and my 3 kids have mates sleeping over and use it as a den as well.

I've added a few more pics of the build as well...

That is quality Longshanks 👏👏

Also think if done properly you're speculating to accumulate with adding value to the property. Think that must be a consideration between a ladish glorified shed that any potential buyers would dismiss of something more structural that could be converted at a later date. Love that bog seat.

Father in law is a nob ender.... he always uses the house toilet when using the facilities as refuses to use this one 🤣

@Longshanks - love that place and where did you get the toilet seat from!!
Thank you. Seat was from Amazon (had to search for orange seats unfortunately as tangerine didnt come up) - https://www.amazon.co.uk/Euroshower...ocphy=1006873&hvtargid=pla-469198411191&psc=1

And then just bought the letters off ebay - think you search for 'letters wall art' and various options come up.

Did have a north end badge in the bog, to help my lads with their aiming 😉, but it washed off... need to find a water proof transfer but not got around to that yet.
