Watched him on many occasions in my youth, he was definitely Britain’s best amateur golfer, despite Gary Wolstenholme saying he was the best, in the title of his autobiography
Watched him win the Lytham Trophy in the pouring rain back in the early 70’s and in the final of the English Amateur at Ganton when I lived there, shooting 61 in the 1st round of the final leaving his opponent ( who scored level par) 9 down at lunch!
He was also a very modest man, a true gent
