Sir Stanley

I am unsure if this has been posted today, but our Sir Stanley would have had a birthday today.
Born today in 1915, played as an outside right. Won the Ballon d’Or in 1956 which was given to the best European footballer.
I am sorry I never say you play at Bloomfield Rd but watching you on dvd is good enough for me.
Thanks for happy memories.

Do you mean Stanley Matthews? Seen the one in Hanley town centre. I just think his best achievements were with Blackpool and he's probably our most famous player so no idea why we don't have more acknowledgement of that at our stadium.

The one at stoke is a fantastic statue I have to say. We should certainly have one I think.

Stan the man. A total one off, there will never be another player capable of performing at such a high standard for so long.

Yes, a statue of Sir Stanley at the NW corner of ground on that grassy plot would look well.
Would it overshadow Stanley Mortenson though?

I don't really understand why we don't have a statue for him. It might be something to do with people believing he has a greater history and affiliation with Stoke.

However, I believe he played more games with us than Stoke. He won his FA cup medal and Ballon d’Or with us and probably the majority of his England caps.

You also have to admire the work he did in Africa , especially the townships where the authorities warned him it was too dangerous.

I cant see why two clubs cant have a statue to the same player.

I saw him play many times from 1951 when I was barely 6 until when he left to return to Stoke ten years later.

I remember my father telling me that once he had the ball near the corner flag surrounded by three opposition defenders ,he feinted to go one way and then the other but had barely moved from the corner flag by which time all three defenders were now sat on their backsides.

The Wizard of the Dribble as he was known had no equals and was the first footballer to be knighted. We will never see his like again and for all he achieved with us we surely should have a statue of him in a place of honour.

We should've done a joint statue of the two Stan's outside the west stand. There are some great pictures of them together.

I did actually see Stan play but I was too young to remember.
Maybe Sky will pay for a statue?
There again they probably don't know he played for Blackpool.

I think the reason we didn't have a statue for SM is that Stoke already had one.
Today, maybe that wouldn't have mattered, but it did then.
No doubt about it, he should have a statue at BR.
A true gentleman and unassuming about his skill etc.
Also a very nice person.
