So we won despite Pickford

He's a strange one is Pickford. For every balls up he makes he does something equally brilliant.

He probably wouldn't be my own choice as he seems to get almost hyper with excitement (thus the stupid distribution) but he's Southgate's choice - and that's good enough for me. He's let one goal in too which is stupendous (although I really would credit Phillips and Rice for making us more solid as a defensive unit than we've ever been).

Kicks like a mule and ideal in penalty shoot outs/one-on-ones or situations where there's no time to think. He's a good 'un.

His super reaction and alertness is probably adrenaline driven in some part, but it’s probably the same adrenaline that can lead him towards nerves and overreaction driven mistakes.
It’s a double edged sword maybe, but statistically he’s well on top of it.

Pickford is the right choice. Who else do you play? Henderson is a reserve keeper who hardly plays, Sam Johnstone who has only just broken into the squad (and is from Preston?) Outside the squad, Pope is injured and Ramsdale who has been relegated twice in a row and is more error prone than Pickford.

People keep pointing out Pickford's deficiencies, but who else? He's very good keeper who makes mistakes. He also makes saves others wouldn't. He's eccentric, some keepers are. People purr over the Italian keeper and say he's one of the world's best but his kicking was dicey last night, his positioning was weird several times.

It's the safest thing in the world for a keeper's reputation to be glued to their line and just make saves - proactive keepers like Pickford always look more risky/dicey because they take more risks in order to influence the game.

Yep. You make the best of the person you have and Gareth Southgate quickly made him his number one in place of Joe Hart. Who is very similar but JP has time on his side with the right specialist coaching whereas I think there was a point in time with Hart where something happened (the Pirlo penalty?) and he just didn't recover mentally.

Yeah I agree. I posted in the match thread he just needs a Maguire or a Stones to pat the hand down and tell him to just calm down.

His reaction saving is superb and I agree there is nobody better. Bloody Schmeichel Junior has lived here more than Denmark! How dare he!

He didn't have his best game but has been excellent for the majority of the tournament. I think collectively we need to stop and actually appreciate the achievements of this group of players and get 100% behind them on Sunday.

He has made a few decent stops.

Probably should have been nearer that one tonight, wasn't in the corner and was at the side hes expecting it to go.

For me a top keeper in in position to save it, as good a strike it was.

Saw it late, because their wall was illegally in the way (thought the referee had a bit of a shocker tonight.) , the got to he same type of height but with more power against Germany.

He's never cost England a goal.
Not sure what you mean by “illegally in the way”

He'd played really well up to Saturday, but tonight he was very poor with his distribution and mistakes.

I think the occasion got to him!
Far too many stones being cast at Pickford

imo he’s been our best player making many crucial saves - he also nearly saved that brilliant free kick last night

his problem is his height but he more than makes up for it in many many other ways

OK, that's Pickford done. Now lets cast around for someone else we can give some stick to.

Let's face it all this well played stuff is really, really boring.

He’s the best we have at the moment and a very good reactive shot stopper his only problem is what goes on in his head at times and you can see it affects him, but he's got time to sort this.

Let’s be honest. No one is looking at that game and saying keeper masterclass are they? But still only conceded one goal on the competition. Hope he cuts out the distribution errors for the final.

Defence organised, and it not tells them, the offside safe from oldberg was class. One goal conceded from what was a very soft free kick to give. all tournament and we criticise what is wrong with people so easily criticising someone. Golden glove winner. First final in 55 years

We have concede 1, and I don't blame him for that. Danish keeper has a shot blasted into his guts, makes a decent save from Maguire and let's ball slip out of his hands for the penalty, which he should have done better with once he went right way. The best save of the night was Pickford low down to the right, not the one going wide. One is MOM, other a liability. Has never cost England a match, so till he does support him.

I just love AVFTT, especially all the critics who have played professional football at the top level and played in every position on the park.
Keep it up guys, it really does entertain me. 👍

Might not be a golden glove in this competition, but Pickford has had an almost stunning tournament in my opinion.
Well done sir 👍

Thanks Lala for reposting the original post and comments. Laughable isn't it.
