Sonny Carey

Will have been tired after Wednesday night but you can see that his great performance at Fwood made him play with his head up tonight. Not far off getting us a third in the last few mins and took defenders on himself.

There are players who need a kick up the arse and those who need an arm around them (sometimes a bit of both).

He’s young, he’s learning and no player wants a relegation from the Championship on their CV. Well done Sonny.

Let’s get behind him 👍

I,ve been his biggest critic but I have to agree with you going forward he,s becoming a viable threat. He,s certainly not a holding mid fielder

All together now

Oh Sonny Carey
You are the love of my life
Oh Sonny Carey
I'll let you sh@g my wife
Oh Sonny Carey
Wish I had ginger hair too

Saw the title and thought "not another ** snipey thread about Carey where people complain that he's not Neil Bishop" and what a pleasant surprise it was to be wrong... 🧡

It's really quite simple play him in the right position and we will get the most out of him but he isn't a nailed on starter.
Him and Dembele should be competing for a starting place behind the front 2, whoever is in the best form starts but more often than not the other one will also get 30 minutes coming on as a sub.
We want Carey to do well but he hasn't been great but it's not all his fault, a bit like criticising Connolly when he played left wing back when we all know his best position is on the bench.

Childish comment re CC from someone who obviously knows zip about football and never played.

I think Connolly is an average league 1 player that can cover a few defensive positions and is useful to have on the bench.
With the benefit of your illustrious playing career what nailed on position would you give him in the starting 11

Carey was terrible again as he was in previous games but he popped up with a couple of goals so I guess that people won't see past that and will forget about his dreadful other play .Goals apart he has possibly been our worst player for some time
Agree with you entirely , but by scoring those goals it may give him more confidence to improve and that can only be good for the team . Also he does have one attribute and that is ,he has a good shot on him.

I can see why people are split with their opinions. Mine is, he will be a big player this season. He’s new to L1 and it’s a new system with a changed team, things take time.

Was unlucky with a few close shots early in the season, but those 3 goals in 2 games will settle him a bit and he’ll kick on now. I also acknowledge the things he’s got wrong as well but think he’ll improve. Time will tell.

Sonny Carey is learning.

We would, of course, love to have these seasoned pros like Luka Modric in our midfield. Sometimes, you get ready made gems for this level like Norburn.

Sometimes, you have to take a punt on a young kid from a lower league with talent. Then you train them. They won’t always get it right, they will have dips in form and confidence (especially following a relegation), but stick with them, and if their attitude is right, they will come good.

Sonny works hard, his attitude is right. For me, that’s what I want in a BFC shirt. Not a sulky ex youth from Tottenham. A real lad who wants to learn and will improve.

His problem is over confidence at times. He's not as good as he thinks he is so gets into trouble.

i like him, i think he's capable of becoming a very decent player, and it seems clear that he is rated within the club, but he is very much a work in progress.

i'm more than willing to give him the benefit of the doubt but his concentration needs to improve.

i can live with him not quite delivering that killer ball but, at times, his short passing can be poor and wasteful - it's almost as if he has visualised completing what may be a routine pass but, in the middle of the park for instance, it can often be pure manna for the opposition. he needs to track back better too. these are the nuts and bolts of being a midfielder - even an advanced one - and without tightening up this part of his game, he will not realise his full potential, which would be a shame.

Interestingly, hes now played the same number of games for us (63) as his last team, Kings Lynn. During that time he scored 8 for KL, and has so far scored 7 for us. Higher level, so that's an improvement. Hes only 22, so by my reckoning by the time hes 28 he'll be Kevin De Bruyne.

Agree there’s plenty of things he needs to work on but this is all part of how a club can help to make a player. It comes from the player themselves and the club.

I noticed when he replaced Lavs that he made similar cuts in from the left channel and basically acted as a striker. Critchley knew he was on an upward trajectory after second half against Fleetwood.

Like I said, lots to work hard on and improve before he’s anywhere close to the complete CAM, but he’s getting his form back and I’m pleased for what that means for the team.

I don’t buy the fact you aren’t allowed to pass any form of negative comment. He has generally been poor this season. He was dreadful in the 1st half Wednesday too. Good on him for responding with a brace, but it doesn’t erase being poor on other occasions, including the same game.
He's definitely improving.
Let's concentrate on the recent positives rather than looking back at negatives.
I'm sure he doesn't really care what the AVFTT doom merchants think.

The lad was probably the biggest victim of those two idiot managers who subjected anyone who played in M/F to being part of an organized shambles.

Had Critchley not buggered off he would not look like a shell of a player which he has this season up till last week.

I still think the lad will do well.

I’d agree. The midfield under Appleton and McCarthy really suffered. Injuries didn’t help us under Appleton but the players were visibly demoralised by the time MM started.

I think Carey should be alright and I’m interested to see what happens when Norburn and Dougall return as a shield/ball-winning duo behind. Hope that the forward thinking mids can then roam, play in and around the box.

The question with Sonny is what do we want from him, do we play a formation which helps him and where is his natural position.
He's 'one of those players' who you have to build around rather than fit in.

I reckon a personal song would turn him into Kevin De Bruyne.

Oh Sonny Carey
You're tangerine and white
Oh Sonny Carey
You make defenders look shite
Oh Sonny Carey
Scoring goals for the Pool

What's with the glimmer of positivity?

Have your lottery numbers come in?

Bearing in mind he was coming back from an ACL injury picked up at Hudders on Boxing Day 2021 when he was starting to really develop as a player under Critch before the 2 idiots came along and sent him backwards! There’s a great player in there and he's starting to find pre ACL form again.

Am not sure why fans have jumped on Sonny the way they have this season. I thought he did well last season in the Championship but wasn't helped by a midfield that had no bite or strength. I like him as an attacking midfielder but the problem, for me, this season is we've not really played to that strength.

or maybe just played in a position more suited to his abilities, ive said it before but I think partnered with Dembele with a free rein to get at defences we might have the best attacking midfield in the division.

We were sat behind him at the Morecambe friendly and he was great with the young fans who kept coming up for autographs and selfies..very patient and appeared to genuinely take an interest…another words, showed a good attitude
I’d rather he was a shithouse but scored every game……just being facetious but maybe he’s too nice.

He’s been crap with a few exceptions. He’s not a TOB so it’s just frustration as most of us can see he has the ability. FFS Neil just play him in his best position.

What’s his best position?

I listened to the INO Pod the other night and hear Hoggy saying…”whatever you do you can’t play him in the advanced role, sitting in behind the front two” and he’s better sitting deep alongside Kenny Dougall!!

Previously I’ve listened to the Seasiders Pod and heard how his best position is in the 10, just sitting in behind the front two.

So clearly opinions seem to differ massively!!

That's would be a very bold move, against the better teams I'd have Dougall and Norburn with Carey or Dembele ahead of them and behind a front 2.
Have Dembele and Carey competing with each other for the number 10 position.

He should definitely be played higher up the pitch, to summarise his skill set he can shoot, he can get into good attacking positions, occasionally plays a good forward pass.
However he can't tackle and he isn't great positionally when it comes to defending.
So why would you want him as a deep lying defensive midfielder!

maybe, there is an argument to start out with solidity but i always think it is best to get on the front foot early and then shore up if need be later on.

definitely further forward and given a bit of license to roam

He’s got to be freed from a structure that imposes to defensive responsibility on him “out of possession”. So either him or Dembele at any one time. I’ve just been struck by how much freedom he seems to have played with when we’ve been chasing the game and his focus has been on going forward and not playing a first time pass back to maintain possession.

I agree.

I think Dembele starts and Sonny to replace in a similarly direct role.

My question is should he and Lavery both play at the same time as they both like to hold the ball and attack the left hand channel and cut in on their right?

I was of the opinion the role in the hole is his best position. He excelled in that at times in his first season, Reading away, Sheff U away, Boro in the Milk Cup.

However, he was extremely good second half against Fleetwood playing deeper and finding the pockets of space that Dembele created.

What I don't think we've done at any point this year is play him in the hole. Possibly there was a game earlier on where we started him as a deeper lying striker behind Beesley or Lavs but he hadn't got a free role. Like Dembele did against Derby, he struggled to make an impact in more defined strikers role.

I suppose 'best position' is an odd one. It's like you pointed out how CJ obviously love having Dembele playing and how it makes CJ better. There was a point where Jerry looked twice the player when Gaz played. Feeney and Armand were ridiculously complimentary.

I think what I'm saying is, it's sometimes more than just "what position" but also how you play and who you play with as I saw a totally different Carey playing deeper in that game than the one I'd winced at a bit playing deeper in some other games.

He was our Tangerine Teammate last season, came down to meet 5 different teams, answered questions and signed everything in sight, posed for countless photos with that same great demeanour. I was impressed for a young lad. First question the kids asked? "How much were your trainers" 🤦‍♂️

PS we had Kevin Stewart the year before, never actually showed up.
