The difference for me (along with Byers and Coulson) in the last few games.
Beesley and Lavery worked hard but they just can't find the back of the net.
Defence were excellent for 65 minutes and then am not sure what happened.

However, back to Carey - whatever he has done this last month, whether it's the influence of Byers or just a head shake, he has been excellent and will be an exciting player to have next season if he starts like this.

P.S. CJ .. not bad eh!!

We sat back and invited them on. I hope it doesn’t come down to goal difference now.

Before the first goal I said they were going to score. 63/4m in and you don't have your keeper doing what Grimmy did. Wasn't disguised timewasting, just so obvious that it got their tails up. Next minute Marv I think it was passed it back to DG when there was no need. Something we'd not done without justification all game.

I think we nearly ruined Carey last season when he was forced to play so many whole games when he wasn’t ready because of all the injuries and suspensions.
The rest looks to have done him a lot of good and hopefully he will now kick on.
Pity he wasn’t brought back a few games earlier!

Also playing as a defensive mid with patino which was just silly

I have been one of his worst critics, but today he was excellent. Showed the physicality, which has been lacking for large parts of this season!

As a few others have said, I couldn’t really see a player there (F’wood away an exception). The last half a dozen games he has been our most consistent performer.

On the front foot, driving forward etc, not the negative back pass player of 75% of the season.

It’s down to that question again. “Is it how they are told how to play in the team/system?”

Also I’ve never heard the word frustration used today by so many fans. Frustrated that there’s actually an attacking entertaining team in there. Why does it take 45 games?

Agreed, but for long spells of last season we didn’t have a defensive midfielder available, which is what killed us as much as anything, snd nearly killed Carey’s football career.
We had dougal who if he was played he tended to be played further forward. Appleton and mickosaurus weren't so much coaches as broken charabangs

I’ve questioned a lot of times this season what Carey brings to the team but he has certainly influenced the games positively since coming back into the side.

There were a few games in the championship when he played alongside Dougall and didn't look out of place.
He has been poor this season but I'm surprised so many had written him off as a bad player, instead of recognising he's a good player that's had a significant hit to his confidence after having been badly managed for best part of 18 months.
He was fantastic today, got stuck in, scored a great goal, and most of his long range passing was pinpoint. I agree with others that Byers has freed him from his defensive shackles - he simply isn't a holding midfielder. The fact he was asked to play that role alongside an inexperienced kid in the championship, not long after having moved up from non-league, was disgraceful and a failure on the clubs part, rather than him failing us.
I really hope he goes from strength to strength now.

Not been Careys biggest fan for the sole reason that he hasn't been very good. Today he was, and he had been on an upward curve for the last month.
He deserves credit for this as does Byers who has improved us.

Him and Patino away at Wigan, with Dougall shoved back into central defence was a tragically doomed but heroic effort. I've never got the 'Carey doesn't get stuck in' thing. He's always 'got stuck in' - he's just not been very good at it. That has taken time to develop. That game him and Charlie played a role they were totally unsuited too and ran themselves into the ground doing so. He's obviously had his confidence knocked - but there's a steeliness about the way he's playing at the moment that is lovely to see. He's doing things quickly, decisively and often bravely. That defensive one two with Norburn near the end was as much a thing as anything else. You can see he's trusting his game and understanding his role. He played a pair of first time passes towards the end as well that were impudent as.... - might have been to set away Kylian (or might have been when Lavs missed)

To be fair, I've moaned to fuck about Critchley, but it looks like he's got him ticking and it's a delight to watch him. I really, really rate him. I might have said once or twice 🤣

Fun fact. He's touched the ball more than anyone on the pitch for the last 2 games. 'Goes missing' - whatever...

It will come down to goal difference if we draw and Oxford and Lincoln both lose.
If we catch up with Barnsley we have to have a better goal difference as we have the same now.

We have to win next week. If the others fail to do so, we'll have more points than them. Goal difference isn't a factor in any scenario.

is it critchley who got him ticking or is it despite critchley

If only Critchley had released the handbrake and we’d gone for an 11-0 win today!

Edit to add, if we do fail to win at Reading a draw for us, a 10-0 win for Portsmouth and a 5-0 win for Exeter will be enough.
Believe!

Potentially an excellent player who was badly mismanaged by Appleton. It’s taken him a bit to get it out of his system.

Goal difference is not a factor we need to win and hope two of the other three don't. The only team we can finish level on points with is Barnsley, if they draw their GD = 18 and if we win it would be a minimum of 19.

We were too far behind them, but yes😉

Going back to Sonny, if we get Byers, Coulson and Rhodes in the summer and lose the likes of Virtue, Lavery, Connolly and can we ditch Norburn?!

He's always been good. Not given much of a chance and the object of boo boy fans won't have helped.

He has had to adjust from non-league ffs to Championship and League 1 standards. Quite a jump in all aspects of life! I've always liked him and he has started to score some worldies. No patience amongst people these days, drives me ** nuts.

Last few games Carey has looked a different player, and I admit I was one who had almost lost hope of him making the grade. I am also another who thinks this is strongly related to Byers really finding his rhythm and Coulson hitting form. Those 3 are looking excellent together right now and it’s lifted the whole team.

My real hope is the side is unchanged on Saturday and Critchley avoids the temptation to put Norburn back in the starting lineup. He wasn’t on form for a while before his absence. Keep him on the bench for now.
