Sports Personality of the Year

Even with the Euros and the Olympics held this year the Overseas Award is a shoe-in for Kenny Dougall?

PB

Yes, you'd have thought so and with Critch nailed on for coach of the year there's not that many awards in the balance.

I see Jude Bellingham didn't win the young personality, I'm sure he won't lose any sleep but they give it some nice young Japanese lass who got a skateboard from Santa Claus last year.

Poor form that.
She is half Chinese and for a 13 year old to win an Olympic medal under so much pressure is a great achievement.
Sport isn’t just Football!

So is this a thread about the awards, or just another slag-off-the-Beeb thread?

Voy

I started a thread specifically on the Sports Personailty of the Year, no big problem but I'm surprised you needed to ask.

Apologies if I should have posted on another area or for not putting O/T or whatever I was supposed to do and if you want to discuss the BBC in general, I don't think anybody will mind.

Nobody suggested that sport was all about football Graham, I think it's fair to say that it's the biggest sport in Britain though.

She's half Japanese by the way.

Yep, mistaken for the tennis player.

No problem Graham and apologies if you considered my original post to be overly flippant, I just can't believe how pathetic the whole thing has become but I'm sure there are plenty of folk who enjoy it and I won't let my opinion get in the way of their enjoyment.

Ok. I just found it a slightly offensive and unnecessary way to open up the discussion. And I disagree too.

Like I said last week, they should just save the cash and have a five minute program giving the trophy to Raducanu.

They could invest the savings on getting more live sport instead of this odd retrospective they do every year, it was relevant when people didn't have access to highlights but all it takes now is a quick Google.

I have absolutely no problem with you disagreeing, your opinion is your opinion.

I'm not sure why you were offended by my opinion but nevermind.

Yes offensive is the wrong word. I can't think of the right word though. Just a bit ignorant or something. I dislike this increasingly prevalent attitude.

I mean this program just seems its usual self to me. Pride of Britain? Pile of chite? Really? Is it?

In my opinion, the program should be about a review of the sporting year and in my opinion that's exactly what it used to be.

I am not denigrating the magnificent achievements of the unsung heroes but personally I believe that their magnificent achievements don't need to be celebrated during the review of the sporting year as there are other shows designed specifically for showcasing their achievements.

I am sure plenty folk will disagree with me and will actually find the modern SPOTY far more interesting but there is no need for you to be offended - or whatever the word is - by my opinions.

Pride of Britain is ITV. Now that is shite.

FCS she’s won one grand slam.
Can’t watch this program any more,
it’s outdated and at best cringe worthy.
Lovely lass Emma, will she be given a dame hood in the New Years honers list😂😂😂.
Just a joke when Jimmy Armfield and Ron Hill weren’t knighted .
End of rant.

She won it at 18, it was her second tournament ever, she had to qualify, no other qualifier from either men's or women's has ever won a grand slam, she didn't lose a single set, no other British lady has won a major in 44 years and only Murray has done it amongst the men.

Yeah, I reckon that's worth it.

Absolutely. A clear, stand out, remarkable and very rare achievement. On her own. Age 18. Incredible. The stand out sporting achievement of 2021surely. Not sure why people are disputing it. Sexism? Ageism? Tennisism?

I don't know if many are really, there is a bit of tennisism out there but that's because most people's exposure to it in this country is Wimbledon, which is a complete anachronism which doesn't remotely resemble the other tournaments, I remember people being shocked how brutal the tennis and crowds were at New York but that's normally what it's like everywhere except the weird tea party of SW19.

Hey, quit the Wimbledonism!

She was amazing in that tournament and deserves the award. Plenty of other notable achievements though esp. from the Olympic swimming team. And Hamilton winning the F1 😉
I'm not sure what Daley or Sterling were doing in there when they were part of a winning team? It's not a lifetime achievement award.

Despite my reservations about the whole SPOTY thing I certainly have no problem with her winning the main award but those who disagree may do so just because they'd have given it to somebody else who they believed to be more worthy of the award and not because they don't like women, youngsters or tennis.

Yeah of course. I know. I was just asking, because in my eyes her achievement was remarkable and unrivalled. I knew she'd win when the list was announced. It was blatantly obvious I believe.

No problem Voy and I agree with you regarding her achievement.

While most of the voters - I've not seen the exact numbers yet to be honest but I imagine most voted for her - also agreed with you, just like anything else, not everybody will do.

I disagree re Raducanu but couldn't agree more about the program.

One thing I will say, is that they always put together a good piece to remember those who have left us during the year.

I guess it's obvious but as I get older more and more of the people I grew up watching are now sadly departing and this year we lost a number of good people.

The P is for personality not performance. Of the nominees, Fury has more charisma.

However, thought Emma did remarkably well at Wimbledon then the US Open and was a justifiable winner for her achievements this year.

Personally, believe a joint nomination for Burrow /Sinfield would have been justified.

Both awards for the England men's football team and Gareth Southgate are cringeworthy, especially when other nominees were actual winners in their respective fields. We failed, at home, in a European Championship, as much because of a coaching decision than meeting better opposition.

All 3.

It should have been renamed "Sporting Performance of the Year" a long time ago - because although that is how the winners tend to be selected, there are always some who question whether the winner has a "personality" 🙄
I think that overall, Raducanu's US Open win was the single most impressive sporting achievement of the year - but certainly many others did extremely well in their chosen sports too.
I think Skye Brown deservedly won the youngster's version by a country mile. (Certainly if the 2 others up on stage with her were the closest rivals).
During my lifetime, I'm struggling to remember a British 13 year old (and yes, she is "British" - virtually every country on Earth now has a wide ranging cosmopolitan society) achieving so well at such a young age (Normally Americans or Russian/Romanian gymnasts etc😁)

Totally agree that the piece about those who've left us is always very moving - and always some you didn't realise had gone☹️

What Raducanu did must rank as one of the all time greatest achievements in British sport since WW2....and she has a personality!
