Stanley Harding Mortensen

A great player with a personality to match. He made Blackpool his home for most of his adult life and his contributions to the town in a number of fields not just in football were exceptional.

He also visited me in hospital when I was just 9 years old, stopping the team bus on their way to Cardiff to do it, as a nurse who knew him saw I had brought The Stan Mortensen Football Album book in with me.I was somewhat overawed and tongue tied at the time but have never forgotten that special moment.

Happy birthday Stan and fond memories.

Please see this image on Twitter link below of Morty and follow the hashtag for all other memories of legend Stan to celebrate his 100th birthday next month on 26th May:

Thanks. Does anyone remember his sports shop on Lytham Road? I used to pop in their sometimes as a kid. Stan was more often than not there himself. A Pool legend.

Great stuff 50´s!

My gran really liked him. She had little or no interest in football (though she always knew the scores) and she had him down as a real gent, I think because he was friendly and chatty when she went into his sports shop (is that right?) to get school sports kit for my dad and uncle.

She always softened a bit round the eyes at mention of Morty and hardened at Matthews, because,as I've recounted before, he once cut in front of her at the butchers 'waltzing in, like he owned the place!'

Ah, clearly my memory of my grans story is correct!

It's mad that. It's like Alan Shearer opening a corner shop or something...

Yeah I bought my kit from there. I used to look in the window at the boots etc. I dreamed of owning a pair of George Best boots that laced up at the side .A deep purple colour. They never really took off although i dont know why. Maybe you couldn't tie them tight enough. I never did get a pair.

Matthews used to live on St Anne's Road, more or less opposite Arnold School's pitches. His son, also Stanley, was a county level tennis player and I remember they had a lawn tennis court in their garden.

I got a pair - second hand mind.

I feel your pain - so wanted some for my birthday, but my parents bought me a pair of ‘Shooting Stars’ boots from Timpson’s.

‘Just as good’ they said.

But they bloody weren’t were they....??😱😭

Probably told this story before but for any newbies......

I was fortunate enough to get an invite to a presentation at the tangerine club, Ball and Blackpool mean business.

There were loads of players past and present at the time and my friends father suggested that we collect some autographs from some of the players.

I won't list them all but Matthews and Mortensen were 2 of the signatures acquired.

As Morty is signing he asked me if I wanted Brian Londons autograph?
I said that London wasnt at the presentation.
Ah but I can forge his signature, to laughs from some of the others there.
OK then, thanks very much.

He handed the invite back to me with his signature written across it, as a naive 16 year old I asked where he'd done Londons signature.

It's there lad in the top corner.
And where he pointed was a big X !!

A great man who passed away 4 days before my eldest was born 👍🏻

International level, very briefly but not good enough to stay at that level.

He was a regular in the Cocktail Bar at the Carlton Hotel when I was Assistant Manager, early 1970's.
Great man, lovely wife and terrific personality.

I blame Apple’s predictive text function for SS58’s spelling mistake...
A bit like you accidentally pluralising Harry’s surname. (’s). 🙂
If you use 's at the end of someones' name e.g. Harry's, it means Harry is. We are now following the American way of using the 's, possessive s' is really the correct way of using the ' .
No doubt others will disagree with me. 🙄

I think Stanley Jnr went to US and was a tennis coach.

Style Matchmakers!

Was there also at that time a design of boots with the studs on a circular plate that moved? The idea being that you could turn whilst still keeping a grip on the surface. Never caught on.

Adding 's after a subject noun is a possessive: Harry's ball (the ball belonging to Harry). It can also be used as a contraction - as you point out: Harry's at the match (Harry is at the match).
Where the apostrophe appears after the s it is still a possessive but only for a plural subject noun.
So, where one football team is the subject and they play in red shirts, the example would be: All of the team's red shirts were being washed.
Where a number of teams who play in red are using the same laundry and every team was washing its shirts, the example would be: All of the teams' red shirts were in the wash.

No, it doesn’t. No, it isn’t. Clearly, you did not get grade one in the English Language ‘O’-level. 😋

Many memories of Blackpool FC from holidays ( Summer ) and Illuminations ( Winter ). These memories have stayed with me all my life.
Photographs with Stanley Mortenson at his shop in Lytham Road in the early to mid 1950's and speaking to him, and several famous players outside Bloomfield Road at that time.
In the 1967-68 season when he was Manager , I wrote him a letter after the heart breaking situation of losing out on promotion at the death.
In fairness to him he replied to my letter. What a character!
Blackpool are still my team. I wish all the supporters a hopefully happy ending to this season. Tenete Fidem

We are talking solely about the 's & s' not other versions of the apostrophe.
No, I didn't get any o levels, I left school at 15 to get a job.
However, my English Language is good.

Did he also have a shop near the Winter Gardens on Church street or am I imagining it?

Jealous. I got a pair of white Alan Ball boots instead. !
I seem to remember Alan Ball was one of the pioneers of the white boot along with Alan Hinton (Derby County). Ball was pretty scathing about the quality (or lack of it) of the white boots and that they made him a target for the hatchet men like Chopper Harris.

The ‘Alan Ball’ white boots were made by Hummel & he actually only wore them a couple of times, as he hated them.

As he was paid £1,000 by Hummel to publicise them - a goodly sum at the time - he sought to deceive by getting one of the apprentices to paint his Adidas boots white, until he was sussed by a Hummel rep!

PS - I did see a pic recently of a ‘Pool match v WBA from, I reckon, the 70/71 season, featuring the great Harry Thomson wearing white boots. Will try to track it down....
