Stopped by the police.

My Dad just called me, was driving back from Lidl and was stopped by the police on Talbot rd asking where he was going. Even checked the boot to make sure he had shopping.

That's kind of reassuring in a way. I wonder what they do if it's an illicit journey? Is it a warning or on-the-spot fine?

That's the norm here in Spain ,every day guarda civil on all roundabouts in our area (as said doing their job to try keep scumbags from spreading virus)(not suggesting your dad is anyway in that category),but feel t's the way it should be if we want to return to normal.😞.

Obviously no fncking crime to solve!!!
So if there’s a bit of an illegal gathering say next door to you then you won’t bother if the police don’t turn up?
Would you say the spread of the virus is just a bit of a misdemeanour then?
As Spruce said there needs to be some form of monitoring if we are eventually going to get this mess sorted.
Unfortunately some respond with the usual “obviously no fncking crime to solve” and if everyone adopted that attitude then the death toll would probably be doubled.
What we don’t know from the O/P is the manner in which the stop was carried out.
Ie. “Good afternoon Sir. Sorry to bother you........” etc etc
OR. “What are doing driving when there is a curfew on? Where have you been?”
People are just too quick to judge when they don’t know the full circumstances.

The one thing I would question is their right to search his vehicle,

Should stop more vets and issue more fines to those away from home area without good cause and if you've nothing to hide what's the problem being stopped in order to try n controll this pandemic

It was a bloke in a car on his own, not a ** warehouse party ffs...

These are the only reasons to be out

Leaving home

You must not leave, or be outside of your home except where necessary. You may leave the home to:

  • shop for basic necessities, for you or a vulnerable person
  • go to work, or provide voluntary or charitable services, if you cannot reasonably do so from home
  • exercise with your household (or support bubble) or one other person (in which case you should stay 2m apart). Exercise should be limited to once per day, and you should not travel outside your local area.
  • meet your support bubble or childcare bubble where necessary, but only if you are legally permitted to form one
  • seek medical assistance or avoid injury, illness or risk of harm (including domestic abuse)
  • attend education or childcare - for those eligible
For the life of me I can't understand where all the cars on the road are going and there is nothing to do other than shop for food

I don't have a problem with police stopping people personally

X3. I know you have a hatred for the police but how do you know he was on his own?
The O/P didn’t reveal that.
As I said people are quick to condemn even though they don’t know the full circumstances.

I don’t ‘hate’ the Police... I just don’t like the fact that our Police Service lack integrity.

I’m assuming the O/P might have mentioned if his dad had several passengers in the vehicle... Not that having passengers in a vehicle is justification for hassling folk in any case.

I’m all for dealing with actual issues... Like house parties with loads of people, but as another poster has said, this is just a case of ‘no real work to do’ so go and harass a few people who are doing nothing wrong 👎

I see you were quick to assume this bloke was doing something wrong, considering the O/P never mentioned anything of the sort.

My support bubble is not in my immediate area and I also volunteer outdoors which is exempt.

I'm basically filth.

Load of bollocks, an easy target, they would not stop a bunch of teenagers gathering on the corner for fear of getting grief. No way are they searching my car.

It's instances like this that form people's opinion of the police. Where I live the only time I see them is sitting in a van pointing a speed camera at traffic clocking up fines in a non-sensitive (accident or otherwise) location. I have never been in trouble with plod, but always found them to be surly, superior and generally dismissive.

The pandemic and lockdown is bringing the worst out of some folk, foaming at the mouth wanting students to be fined for meeting up etc. If the govt have been more consistent with their messaging and management of the crisis they might have had more support. It's been a shambles and the public's resolve for lockdown is crumbling.

The govt need to get their arse in gear and come up with a different strategy post vaccine - summer etc. If we're not careful they'll still have restrictions in next winter.

I'm off down Talbot Road in the morning-site work and its bedlam come bacon butty time.
Lots of folk sleeping in doorways and queuing up for food and drinks early doors, and not one hint of a copper or anyone else.

I thought they* had a place for the night or summat?

*not the cops

I really cant see how stopping a car with one man in it, driving in a town centre, is going to be of any help in reducing the spread of covid.
There must be more useful things they can be doing.

You assume that this sort of harassment is justified...It’s not... It’s utter bullshit.

The only time the Police should be stopping anyone is if they have clear evidence that a crime is being committed.
Being stopped by the police once during this virus lockdown is hardly harassment is it?? If the poor old boy was stopped 4 times on his way home, that would be harassment.

Fuck me, I would shit myself if I were stopped and they asked me to look in my boot, it would be touch and go whether I had a dead body, a stash of class A or swag from a burglary...... I mean, surely we have all been in that position?

Never done burglary or committed murder 😇👍

Agreed, but better to keep your cool and just dont stop, with a bit of luck and my local knowledge I always managed to shake them off, sounds like you've been very lucky not to be stopped!

To me, stopping people who are going about their business is harassment.

There’s absolutely no need for it and it really doesn’t have any positive impact on the virus situation.

The same as poking your nose into people’s business when they are trying to take a peaceful country walk, filming them with drones etc.. etc..

If there’s a big party going on then fine.... if people are gathering in sparks in large numbers a quick “move along folks, there’s a pandemic going on” etc...

We don’t need nor want this kind of intrusive Nazi style Policing....

🙃 🤣 😜

So saying "white privilege" is when one disagrees with someone else and wants them to not have that opinion. Nobody tells another to check their privilege when they agree.

If Jonathan Pie says it it must be true 😂😂

Your white privilege clearly prevents you from recognising the issue that you so glibly dismiss! Maybe you should try speaking with a person of colour and asking them how they feel about your comments.

What amazes me is that despite the recent worldwide protests highlighting these issues, that people are still so blissfully ignorant.

My partner is a key worker who has just finished her shift, she doesn't drive, I've just gone out to pick her up.
Not on the list as far as I can see but I'm not going to let her walk home at 10.45 on a winter's night and why should she have to pay for a taxi.
If the police stopped me in theory they could fine me, I don't think that would be right.

I've got no objection to being stopped and asked my reason for being out, but I draw the line at giving personal details and being searched if there is no suspicion of wrongdoing, if they suspect me of something dishonest then fine.

Been to pick up my stepdaughters dog as she was at work & took it out with ours it was essential to the poor dog & I didn't get close to anyone. Wife went shopping for food yesterday & picked up something from a click & collect at the same time. Did some outside jobs for someone today, went to the chippy last week stood outside after a masked ordering, is it essential? probably not but as they are allowed to open it's not unreasonable to expect people to use it. Hardly the crimes of the century & you're not telling me nobody else is doing exactly the same. Under the restrictions the levels of infection are falling so we must be doing something right. If you get stopped you are going shopping or for exercise or work.

This is the issue we have unfortunately....

The people and probably the Police don’t actually understand the law that is being enforced.

Those are not the ‘only’ reasons that people can be out. The reasons people can be out, do however ‘include’ those reasons set out. There is no suggestion in the legal wording that ‘reasonable excuse’ is limited to the specified ‘excuses’

So any ‘reasonable excuse’ for being outside of your home will do. Therefore some of the examples mentioned above like ‘picking up a key-worker from work’, collecting an ‘animal to look after it’, ‘driving to undertake essential maintenance on a property you own’ and a whole range on other things would be fine.

What the Police should be doing instead of operating on the fringes of the law and thereby harassing people for going about their lawful business, is dealing with matters where there is a clear breach of the law.
