Strange old English sayings

I remember when I was a young tearaway having run ins with Bolton fans back after the match in the old Burnden Park days and a Bolton copper said to me "Listen lad, if I wasn't so busy I'd lock you up for the night, so I'll give you an old Lancashire saying, go and sling your hook back to Blackpool before I change my mind"

I had a humorous book years ago called ‘Lanky Spoken Here’. (Still available apparently).
It’s full of old Lancashire sayings with their meanings,

The one I remember is “Hald tha clapper else I clack tha lughole”.

Old Lanky for “Shut your mouth or I’ll punch you in your ear”.

Only in Lancashire! 😂😂

My ex wife’s gran used to say “If you can’t fight, wear a big hat”.
I think I get it, but always thought she was mental funny with her old sayings.

I know it was just a setup for the England fans line, but the golf one isn’t true.

I was reading recently about common English phrases Shakespeare coined or at least popularised and it’s basically everything!! We all quote Shakespeare every single day and don’t know we’re doing it!
