Looks pretty horrific and the government is getting pelters for only getting diplomats and their families out, and telling other British citizens to stay indoors, while countries have managed to start extracting their citizens.

Apparently their are 4,000 British citizens there, which I find amazing, who are they and why are they there?

70 of them are NHS Doctors according to one who phoned SkyNews. So you would presume that the Government know they are there. 🙄

Business, family...all sorts.

Apparently 4,000 Brits , and 16,000 Yanks. The evacuation has apparently started , however I can't honestly see that all 4,000 will be able to get out immediately. It will take some planning and some time. In the meantime if anything happens to one Brit, the opposition parties will be blaming the government. Mark my words.

Not just the opposition.Appears nothing much done by the UK govt until now. Seems likely the plane taking out Embassy staff could have taken more. Other countries had fewer nationals, but until Sunday night at least we weren't even talking about taking out anyone other than Embassy staff. EU countries seemed to have worked together to get people out ( we're on our own now of course! ) . See end of this article for figures. Some talking about 2000 UK nationals.

Tin hat on, but…..

It’s only fair that the government/security forces concentrated on getting the diplomats and their families out - they are there working on behalf of the UK.
The other British nationals are there by choice. Some will be charity/aid workers, but the majority will be there because of high wages or because they are enjoying a good standard of living.
Sudan has been unstable and/or oppressive for decades, particularly over the last 18 months. Those there by choice have had plenty of time to leave of their own accord.
The situation reminded me of seeing an interview in the late ‘80’s, of Jackie and Sunnie Mann, living in Beirut. They were advised to leave by our government but absolutely refused to budge. When Jackie was eventually taken hostage, it took a couple of years of our Government bending over backwards to get him released.

Having said that, I prey that all those now wishing to get out of Sudan manage to come home safely.

Cant agree they have no responsibility for our nationals, some of whom are NHS doctors visiting their families and I imagine many are short term visitors. Though I accept people should try to assess risks when travelling overseas etc. But in any case the government has belatedly changed tack.
Other countries have evacuated their nationals. We are probably going to use an airfield controlled currently by German soldiers, outside Khartoum .
The attached article gives what seems to be an up to date report on what i happening.

WTF do families go to war torn Khartoum for a holiday?
Then expect the GB Government to get them out when the situation worsens?
They're either dual nationals with family in Sudan who were visiting for Eid and got surprised by the sudden outbreak of conflict, or Brits involved with NGO, charity and not for profit schools.

The conflict is an internal power struggle with no great animosity to foreign tourists, so it's not a massive ask for the UK government to help with the logistics and put on a few extra flights, just like the governments of other developed countries have done.
