Tangerine TV - things that can be improved

I think TTV's roll out has been good on the whole. But there's room for improvement.

I'm gonna be sending in some friendly "suggestions for improvement" to whoever reads the customer service email (which I'm sure they'll just love and implement immediately), and I'm wondering if anyone here feels similarly. This goes out to anyone but especially to my fellow international viewers for whom watching the matches online is our main BFC experience.

  • Obviously there's the bandwidth issues, which I assume they're working on now.

  • For replays, I don't understand why we don't have the radio commentary lined up the way we do live. Under iFollow we had this for replays, we could even choose home or away broadcast. Sometimes it's nice to have no commentary and that would be a nice option, but I'd like to be able to watch replays with commentary.

  • I really wish there was a way to watch a replay without the score being blasted everywhere first. Most matches kick off at 8am where I live, and while I can usually get myself up in time sometimes I need my Saturday morning sleep. It would be nice to be able to watch the replay without knowing the result first. iFollow did blast the score too, but it did so in a predictable pattern where I knew exactly which part of the screen to cover up so that I didn't see it (it was funny to look at, me with one eye squinted closed, one hand holding a piece of paper in front of my face, the other clicking on the small bit of the screen I could still see). I doubt I'd be able to manage that with Tangerine TV's current setup.

It's kind of funny, all the dodgy pirate replay sites go out of their way to make sure they don't give away any scores. Whereas the legit ones we're supposed to use blast scores everywhere all the time, as though no one would ever want to watch a replay without first knowing how it ends. It shouldn't be hard to make direct links to replays without scores in the title, or just give us the option of turning scores on or off.

  • On that end, it would also be nice to not have such a long delay between the match completing and the replay being made available. My guess is this is to encourage domestic viewers to go to the matches, and it's no good for me to say "but I'm in another country" because it's easy enough for a domestic fan to switch on the ol' VPN and pretend to be in another country. But hey, I can dream.

  • Finally, why are older videos no longer available to view? For instance, the Bristol City replay is nowhere to be found now. There's a "latest videos" section, and then other sub-sections like "interviews", "behind the scenes" etc, but there's no "all videos" section. With iFollow, if I wanted to go back and watch a match from three months prior, I could. Can't think of any good reason not to allow this on TTV.
Love to hear what others think, especially anyone who knows how replay quality and availability is for other clubs who are outside of iFollow.

I'll be reserving judgement for a little later. Once I can actually manage to watch a game. Won't be using it again until I've had a refund for the 60 minutes I never saw of the Coventry game.
Saw pretty much all of the Ifollow games last season

That's a really good post containing a lot of positive ideas. Worth saying though that the replays might not only be popular overseas, and not just for those doing a Likely Lads impression so they can avoid the actual outcome before watching! I stuck up a post on Sunday about my own thoughts gained from watching the replay of Saturday's game, and it seems that quite a few others also seem to have gone down this line. I could see this Sunday afternoon pastime growing in popularity (beats all that Super Sunday sheehite). Even if you know the result, it's quite a thing for all us fans and wannabe managers to be able to take a somewhat more cool and reflective view of occurences between 3 and 5pm on a Saturday.

Absolutely, I also re-watched the Bournemouth match after watching it live the first time (or at least for the portion when TTV wasn't down). And I watched the Middlesborough match after having listened to the audio when it was on and reading all the rave reviews of our winning performance. I wouldn't be surprised at all if there are more people watching the replay who know the result than those who don't. But if we know the result, then we don't need the result in the title of the video - it doesn't add anything.

I honestly don't know who that's for... those who want to know the result can find it very easily, those who don't want to know the result should be able to not have it spoiled right before pushing play on the replay video. I get it when highlights videos on YouTube have the score in the title, that helps you find the match you're looking for. Don't think there's any question of "which match is this?" on TTV if they just include the name of the opponent and the date.

IFollow has the following features and has had these since I have been watching for more than as season. NB: I do not live in the UK.

1. Live Rewind in 10 second intervals so you can check a penalty decision or a goal then return to LIVE again. This feature is located on the bottom left of the Live Match.

2. Choice of either Home or Away commentary

3. IFollow "remembers" your LOGIN details, you do not have to keep logging in everytime you visit the BFC website and TTV.

4. There is a Live Chat available and you get a response within a few minutes. NOT a generated Email.

The last two games I missed the first half which is the Bandwidth issue I presume. 🥺

From my perspective TTV worked well until the Bournemouth game when it went on the blink just after the first goal and being tech challenged had to wake the mrs up for help so we made a brew and watched the second half together .
Love the extra cameras and having Chizzy for the home matches is fab . As for replays yes if they started at 8pm UK time that would suit but 12am UK is mid day in NZ at present so can down tools and neck ale watching the mighty if i wish to . Prefer to watch live in the middle of the night but sorting the band width is imperative and some acknowledgment from the club that they are aware of this and addressing it would be progress .
#UTMP and if in doubt give the ball to Bowler .

Having the score on the replay screen would be good. It’s difficult if you want to rewind or fast forward to a goal when they don’t display the score on screen.

  • YES to this one … just a static link we can bookmark that just goes to a replay of the latest match. Pls mention @SLO_BFC

The extra cameras have been added by iFollow. TTV just take the same stream.

Agree with Seasider3610’s point re having to log in every time. Not a problem per-se on phone/tablet, as you can use the saved password in your settings, but a ball-ache to do it on the browser on a tv, as you have enter each individual letter of your e-mail & password via the remote.

First-world problems, I know….

The stream will be provided by whichever streaming service the home team is using. So an away match stream quality is really nothing to do with TTV - we've seen home matches stream perfectly through TTV, and last season iFollow eventually was a decent stream, and will have had far more people watching than this season - so bandwidth for home matches is not going to be an issue. The backbone of the TTV service is the same company that Liverpool use, so there really can't be an issue with their ability or capacity. Away matches are really out of the club's control in terms of what they show, what the audio is, what replays, etc.
If you were (just for research purposes) to use an IPTV service and compare the stream from one club badged as iFollow and the other club badged as something else, you'd see pretty much the same feed during the match itself, and if one went down, so would the other.

I don't have to re-login on my TV browser. It remembers it. Have you tried bookmarking the TTV page after logging in?

Yes to this, 👍 , and also the elapsed time in the match. It helps build the tension to see how much time we have left to make our comeback.😆

The in-game replays go on far too long. Two/three takes of the same incident, taking us away from the live action. eg in the Coventry game the replays missed a counter attack which almost resulted in Lavery scoring,

I e-mailed the SLO on a number of issues. I particularly wanted a DVD of the play-off final (I collect them....or did). I noted my understanding that this would now not happen with the advent of TTV so wondered about a video archive: the cup finals, past play-off finals, big historic matches. Steve said that this was under discussion.
Steve - apologies if I've misrepresented you.

Thanks, I agree completely. I loved those old DVD season reviews. I guess people don't buy DVDs anymore? Would be great if they could put one together for last season, I'd pay for it. If they want to have a separate subscription to watch historic matches, that would be worth it to me, pretty much the same as buying a DVD.

Yeah, I agree, but I don't *think* the club have control over this. EFL does their thing and sends it to the club.

I don't remember iFollow crashing last season the way TTV has this season, and TTV has crashed for both a home match (Coventry) and an away match (Bournemouth). In both cases there were a lot of people on AVFTT confirming it was down for them at the same time, and then a lot of us confirming when it was back up. It really seems like a bandwidth issue to me... I wonder if TTV have paid for a certain amount of bandwidth from another company that then turned out to be insufficient. I know that the video content is coming from the same place regardless of whether it's iFollow or TTV, but it seems there's an additional bottleneck somewhere now that we didn't have last season.

As far as audio, again, with iFollow we always had it on the replays and we could choose if we wanted the home or away audio. For Bournemouth away this weekend, we had Radio Lancs audio sync'ed up when the match was being shown live on TTV. But then on the replay it's not there. Seems like if they can get it on the live video they should be able to have it on the replay too, but of course I don't know the technical details of how replays are made available.

I forgot about the 10 second skip button. That was really nice for re-watching something without having to get the cursor on just the right spot in the timeline, which of course never happens.

The EFL made a right hash of coverage last night. Covid is still rife and so the minimum would have been to offer coverage to the Sunderland fans (which we could have gained access to) but really the second round of this competition could have given clubs another chance for a revenue stream had they have shown it. Their streaming rights is all over the shop.

Agree with all of this. Getting on has been a big problem a couple of times and missed most of the first half. I wrote to the club and they said they were aware of the issue and it would be fixed before Bournemouth. Duh. Also totally agree about not splashing the score all over the replay page. Midweek fixtures are middle of the night for me and with iFollow I could watch the replay in blissful ignorance 😌

There are lots of little things that just make the service a bit annoying, and it applies to the website as well. its only been up and running for a few weeks so there are going to be glitches, the fact that TTV only became available a week before the start of the season tells me that there were bigger problems, and some of the fixes to get it up and running were a bit rushed.

When logging in you have to hit the log-in button it wont work by hitting return on the keyboard, not an issue on a pc or tablet but on a mobile phone the log in button is hidden behind the key graphics. in my case it means waiting for the keypad graphics to time out.

On a PC the full screen view always has the pause graphic in the middle of the screen, it disappears when you drop to the framed screen on the TTV player. I've tried a number of things to get rid of it, curser not visible, turned off anti-virus which i shouldnt have to do. its the same on all the pc's I use. On a mobile phone it doesnt happen.

It would be nice to be acknowledged that you are logged in, the top of the page even when logged has a link which says log-in.

if a games isnt broadcast like last night, it isnt great that the match centre says "watch live" and then transmission not available. it needs a notice that the game is not being transmitted.

Some of the features of i-follow have been dropped, the 10 second replay function i quite liked, but i can live without it.

in general i think its a good service, and good value. dont quite understand some of the price structuring for different bits, the full season video package doesnt give me commentary for non viewable games but i get the commentary generally.

dont know if this is the clubs thing or its an external contractor, but some of the ingame camera direction is bizarre. eg there was a corner coming up and the replays went on for way too long, we had the chizzy commentary on goal action but watching a replay of something relatively mundane. the lingering shots on the managers, whilst there is action on the pitch,

they are all little niggles, but generally constructive to make the service better.
