Team for Saturday

No more 3 at the back. It just tempts them too much to keep going sideways.

We also lack an overlap in the wing. Watching Casey and Pennington trying to deliver a cross was soul destroying

An old school 4 4 2

Grimshaw
Lyons Ekpiteta Pennington Husband
Dembele Norburn Weir Dale
Rhodes Lavery
I'd almost agree with that but as he apparently had a reasonable game at Wolves I'd swap Dale with Thompson. With GK Apter CJ Dale Connolly Casey (who could swap with Expiteta if need be as an emergency striker) Morgan.

grimmy
Lyons Casey Penny Hubby

Dembele Norburn Weir Apter

Lavery Rhodes
Look at that 11

There’s bloody good quality in that team. I really don’t think we’ve got a poor squad at all? If we had Joseph fit on the bench and the other options available we should be able to be in the mix for promotion.

Give it some time and hope he ditches this failed wing back experiment

Wing backs isn't going to work when the wingbacks are a defensive utility man and a one dimensional winger both playing on the wrong side of the pitch!!
Lyons and Thompson could possibly make it work but there are still issues with the distribution from the back, getting centre midfield players into the box in open play and a lack of options for the front 2.

Maybe a simple 442 or 433 is the way forward.

It’s been a tough few weeks but this thread highlights our strength in depth. We look very strong in any formation.

2 more of good quality and we have the best squad in the league.

I am going to be in the minority here but I think he should try 3-5-2 one last time…

Grimmy

Pennington-Casey-Hubby

Lyons-Weir-Norburn-Morgan-Thompson

Lavery-Rhodes

If that can’t get a win at home then he should give up and go back to what he knows (442 or 4231).
That's probably our best 3 5 2, don't know why he has persisted with Connolly and Hamilton in that lineup but at some point Dembele will be used but he almost certainly can't play in 3 5 2.

Grimmy (I'm including a keeper this time!)
Lyons Casey Pennington Husband
Norburn Trybull (in my dreams)
Weir Morgan CJ
Beesley (if Lavery injured) ooops I meant Rhodes :(

I still have no idea who our right winger is supposed to be unless we put Lyons there and talk about thin on top. I don't really care about selection just ditch that 3-5-2 carp.

The only right footed winger we have is Dale

Bill have another go…your dreams didn’t come true..😂

Grimmy, Lyons, Pennington. Casey, Husband, Norburn. Morgan, Weir, Dembele, Rhodes, Hamilton ( not necessarily my choice but can't see him being dropped)
Subs: O'Donnell, Thompson, Ekpiteta, Carey, Dougall, Connolly, Beesley.

My Catalan friend just confirmed that Ansu Fati has gone to Brighton as Xavi wants to play 4-4-2

Get in… modern football none of that wing back shizzle, that’s archaic

Cj is awful mate

Should be nowhere near our first team
He’s not awful… Sit him on the left against a high line and get balls in front of him and he’s ** lethal.

He’s never going to turn a man or play neat and tidy football, but he can deliver decent balls into the box and his pace is an asset. And despite what people say, he’s fairly solid defensively and positionally aware…. In fact I’m pretty sure that’s why a few managers have favoured him, because he’s intelligent and does what he’s told to do.

Headless chicken who can only play one way

His best game for us was under Appleton when he got in behind Preston

Has one good game in 10

Not for me sorry

Obviously we don't know who is fit but I would like to see something like this

433

Grimmy

Lyons
Expo
Pennington
Hubby

Norburn
Morgan
Weir

Dembele
Lavery
Dale
That's a great team, Phil, and would cause a tremendous cheer from happy fans.

But, the problem is that it breaks all of Critch's laws, namely:

- Any new player must sit out several games on the bench so that any excitement can be drained out of them;

- Players with any flair, or ability to enliven the crowd, can only come on in the final 15 minutes when we are losing;

- and finally, any team chosen by a Blackpool fan is automatically ruled out.

Dale is too slow & I’ve yet to see what he offers. Ok he did score a good goal in preseason, if he did that on a more regular basis then he would warrant a place. CJ on the LHS played in to use his only asset of speed will get balls in. So LHS or late sub.

Take your point but CJ has just not shone last few games I say Dale has never been given a proper chance so why not give him it now?

He seemed to do ok at Portsmouth especially when he first went.

We can always sub him if he’s “not at the races” UTMP🧡

Each to their own…

I’d be more inclined to describe Thompson as a ‘headless chicken’, because he literally has no positional sense whatsoever, despite having a bit more technical ability. CJ is actually very disciplined which is why he’s been preferred in that wing back role (despite the obvious limitations).

I also think he has actually been OK so far this season really… his last couple of performances have been poor, but he did well against Burton and fine in the other two.

People like to get on his back and obviously his close control is an obvious flaw that everyone reacts to, but he’s actually deceptively effective…

Ok I get what you are saying perhaps I’m expecting too much too soon from Dale. Give him a few starts & let’s have a proper look at him. All these reasonable & logical team suggestions make me wonder who the fuck will Critchley pick & where they will play. 🙄

And yet the one thing you really notice about DT is his head.

In my opinion we won't get promoted if we are relying on the likes of CJ, Dale, Beesley, Rhodes, Lavery. For various reasons. I've no idea what to expect from Dembele. Or Rhodes. Both signings seem unplanned and quite hopeful and not for the future, and like last minute reactions.

We dont have the quality we need for promotion I think. I'm wondering if Sadler just wants to hold us L1 for a while.

I think that's a good point about it being unplanned

Rhodes was signed to partner another striker now it seems that idea has gone as we have signed a small skillful winger who will want to play in a 433

Things can turn quickly in football and (despite recent results) I think we have more than enough quality to be challenging this season.

It’s more a matter of Critchley finding that formula to make them click. We know Lavery can score goals, Rhodes ought to be decent at this level.., Joseph is yet to feature and Dembele will offer ability on the ball..

CJ & Dale are also more than capable at this level.., Just a matter of using them to best effect.
