The “10” Role

What i found evident yesterday was we had no one playing that role (maybe by design?)

I’m not one for usually over analysing the game but yesterday it stood out. When we had the ball around the half way line or just over both Lav and Bees were on their toes looking for the long ball over and no one was dropping off to receive the ball in the space in front. Should Sonny have been doing this, i’m not sure? If he was thought he didn’t do it.

From there we either lost possession or went back (to not lose possession) but invariably put ourselves under more pressure?

Just a thought on what i observed from the seats on the side.
Early days but we are a couple of quality additions from being a very good side.

I think it will either be two stikers or one striker and a ten. The midfield was a 6 and two 8s or could be the other way around to be more solid defensively away from home. I think Weir will be played as an 8.

yeah it did look that way. It was my lad who mentioned it and said dad look at the gap/space for someone to drop into.

I can see that but Albie Morgan and Sonny Carey are probably doing what they should be? (FA coaching manual para 47.19)
For me the "No.10" should be given complete freedom which is challenging when Critch has a system where everyone has a specific role.
I've got to accept that Critch has got his qualifications and knows best but Jensen Weir has the look of a No.10.

I don't think there's many teams that play with a true 10 anymore. Bit of a dying breed unfortunately. I agree that a 10 should have no responsibilities except to get on the ball and express themselves but these days coaches are far too structured to use them.
Personally I love the old No10 types, the Roberto Baggios of this world who would do something unbelievable and leave you questioning how he did it. Granted we wouldn't get that in LG 1 but you get my point. I totally agree with your general point though that we are lacking that link man. It's an area that I always though Critch lacked last time too in his team

We didn’t have a 10 yesterday and we won’t whilst we play this system. It’s a holding midfielder (Norburn) and two number 8’s if you will. There was never meant to be a number 10.

Yes, it's a 6 and two 8's for sure.

I felt like Beesley needed to drop deeper and Lavs play off his shoulder or as you say, Sonny push up - though, if Sonny pushes in there, I don't think you play Beesley, you play Sonny instead of him and give him midfielders breaking to play with. We kind of went 541 at the end with Dale the spare man type - we had both our best and worst periods after the changes, which is possibly why Critchley didn't do that earlier.

I thought something very similar and you've expressed it better than I had.

I think Carey and Virtue are penciled in for this role
However Morgan could play this role with Dougal or Trybull alongside Norburn
Our next cup match could be used to look at alternatives
