The 1990/91 Season

Thank you for posting this! The Rochdale game on 1st September was my first ever game. The only things I remember about the experience are:-

- Tango taking me on the pitch before the game and having a kick about with Ooh Andy Garner.
- Spending the second half running up and down the West Stand with another lad about my age.

Having now seen the "highlights" I realise I didn't miss much!

Great add n some good recollections ..... the Briggs red card against Darlington - you would go prison nowadays for a challenge like that

3 sendings off in a row killed us. I actually laughed out loud when I saw Briggsy's challenge 🤣 And what about that Halifax away defeat (and the away end?!) Imagine if this forum had been around after that? 🤣

I know that this was the season I started going to the odd match as a 9/10 year old, but I still can't work out which game was my first and it's really pissing me off! Over 18,000 for the Burnley away game in Division 4!

Although it ended in disappointment, it was a great season when you look back. Billy was just a phenomenal over-achiever. He only added Dave Bamber to Graham Carr's squad. Imagine what he could've achieved with some money?!

What memories! Absolutely loved going to the games back then. What a good side that was and to think we failed to go up. Had Billy been appointed a game or two earlier and we would quite possibly have won that league.

I forgot just how close that play off semi at ours was. They could have been out of sight before we scored

I have so many memories of that season, I went to most of the away games as well as all the home games, very happy days.

If I was to highlight one game, it was the 1-2 win at Hartlepool. Not so much for the late winning goal from Tony Rodwell, or the 200 or so of us brave souls that stood on that rotting open end facing the bitterly freezing wind coming off the North Sea, but for the second half performance from Steve mclhargey. If any one else on here went to that game they’ll know exactly what I mean. I don’t know how we didn’t concede 6,7 or 8 goals that second half. Steve had one of the best goalkeeping displays I’ve ever seen from a pool keeper. Somehow, a combination of his close reaction saves and his 1 on 1 saves managed to keep them acrobatically all out, he was magnificent.

And of course, the highlights only show Tony’s winner and the records show a pool 1-2 win, but it was Steve’s day 😁

Hated Walsall ever since. More so the fact they then hung banners over a bridge on the M6 stating we'd lose the Play Off final 🤬

Anyone else remember stewards opening gates for loads of us to get in for free at Walsall as we'd spent some extra time in the pubs in that place beginning with 'P'? Fred and Barney fighting on pitch my memories of half time. Cannot remember much about the match due to place beginning with P! Oh and the well natured pitch invasion at end of match. Great day out apart from result. Cant wait for those sort of days to return.

Fantastic, really enjoyed watching this brought back great memories. Mcilhargey, Gore, Davies, Wright, Horner, Rodwell, Sinclair, Garner, Bamber, Eyres these are some of the players I think of first when somebody says Blackpool Football Club.
And we still should have beaten Spurs!!
Thanks for posting

How could you not mention the mighty Carl Richards?????

Enjoyed watching that and remember most of the games well. Do we think the standard was higher then than now? Whether your memory plays tricks with you I’m not sure and I know it’s a different era but the standard doesn’t look up to much if I’m honest especially defensively.

OK. Hands up ✋ who went to the late afternoon kick off v Darlington in the League Cup. Mid week but due the floodlights being dismantled we had to play in day light. Think there was a crowd of only 1,500 there.

Halifax away was a nightmare. I can see myself on the clip behind the goal for our first two goals. Went 2 up, and Halifax hadn't scored a home goal at all, all season at that point, then proceeded to bang in five against us.

It was some turnaround from early season, started by the return of Dave Bamber at Hereford away in December.

Still have nightmares about Walsall away 😥. We did take well over 5,000. But what the fuck were some of the fans thinking, running on the pitch at the end and applauding the home fans 😠 That's the last thing I was thinking of doing at that point.

Signing in for the Darlo early kick off game, I think we got done on away goals but could be wrong and that was under Carr.

Great times under King Billy, I am not sure our players back then were as good as we all like to remember but was my most enjoyable time watching the Mighty by a country mile.

Maybe it is just an age thing but I used to like it much more and look forward to games miles more back then, getting excited on a Tuesday night because I knew we were all going to Chesterfield on the Saturday even though we had nothing to play for, I couldn't give a nowadays and would rather be in the pub.

They did it again in 1996.
Last home game of season and a win would have all but promoted us.
We lost 2-1 and that was our automatic promotion all but lost.
We had to win at York and hope that Oxford didn’t beat lowly Peterborough at home.
Easy 4-0 win for them.

I sold my York away tickets ( face value) after the game as I knew it would require a miracle.
It would have been a 300 mile round trip with time off work and other inconveniences.

Remember that vividly Graham. Both the home defeat & the knowledge the way Oxford were on a roll wouldn't slip up. Think peterborough held on for quite a while then capitulate.

So many good memories of that season and the following one.... A lot of away games were a blur

Think I only missed two games all season home and away..... Was gutted at Wembley

Remember the doors getting kicked in at Walsall as when we arrived they were all closed as it was full and loads of people in fancy dress just barging their way in

Good memories and situations that would never happen in this era

To think that the legend that was Graham Berry would be at all of those games shouting COME ON BLACKPOOL SCORE!!!
The great Graham Berry, hilarious fun on the away coaches. He'd walk up and down the aisle on the coach stopping off at every couple of seats to share his predicted team sheet he'd written in his note book. Then he'd stand up at the front on the way home and read out his post match synopsis like a Sky Sports commentator - magical 😆

I was 17/18 that season.

Had a part time job so had a bit of money coming in, football was affordable too.

Went to every home game and a decent number of away ones.

So many thoughts so in no particular order.

South paddock surge; I'm glad I got to live it before they put the additional crush barriers in. And then all seater stadia.

Football used to smell different. And I can smell it now. It also smelt different depending on the weather!!

Coach travel and pilling out at random service stations before returning into Blackpool at 2am and waking home from BR.

Huddersfield away in the FA Cup 2nd round; had been postponed once. It was freezing, that terrace was as slippy as anything. Graham leading the conga with "Tottenham you are next,..." and "PNE are you listening, to the song that we're singing"

What a great way to see the country. Loads of places visited you'd never dream of visiting for any other reason than football.

When 8500, felt like a huge crowd. And when the sun shone, early and late season, and the away end was packed. The time difference between the away end moving as they scored and then the noise.

The first few games with no sponsor on the shirt. Probably my favourite shirt too.

And Brenda who I worked with, we often went to away games. She'll be 80 now probably, but she was lovely.

I could go on.

Happy, happy memories.

And finally,

TSSJr1 is 17, 18 in August, same age as I was then; but I wouldn't let him do it! Strange how your outlook changes.

My first season attending as a Blackpool fan and when you think back over those two seasons that Billy was in charge the home form would have lured any fan in. Good times.
